Meaning

In the chapter on the Imperishable Brahman, Krishna gives a wonderfully practical teaching: remember God at all times while still performing your worldly duty. One need not abandon action — by offering the mind and intellect to the Lord and keeping Him in continuous remembrance, the devotee is assured of reaching Him without doubt. It harmonizes devotion (bhakti) with action (karma) in a single, doable practice.

Origin & Story

Bhagavad Gita Chapter 8, Verse 7 · Sage Veda Vyasa (Mahabharata, Bhishma Parva) · Ancient (text compiled c. 5th–2nd century BCE)

In the eighth chapter, Akshara Brahma Yoga, Krishna answers Arjuna's questions about Brahman, the Self, and what happens at the time of death. Teaching that whatever one remembers at the final moment determines one's destination, he gives this practical instruction: remember Me always while doing your duty, and you will surely attain Me.

As told in scripture

Saints and devotees who cultivated unbroken remembrance of the Lord — repeating His name through every task — are said to have departed the body with His name on their lips and merged in Him, fulfilling this verse's promise of attaining Him 'without a doubt.'

It means keeping the Lord in the background of awareness — through His name, a mantra, or a loving feeling — even while the hands and mind are engaged in duty. With practice, remembrance becomes continuous, like a quiet undercurrent beneath all activity.
No. Krishna explicitly says 'remember Me and fight' — that is, do your duty. The verse harmonizes devotion with action: you remain fully active in the world while inwardly offering everything to God.
Krishna teaches that the thought held at the moment of death shapes one's destination. By remembering God at all times throughout life, that remembrance naturally arises at the end, leading the devotee to the Lord — which is why constant practice is stressed here.
