Complete Translation

The Goddess said: O Lord, best of the Bhairavas, compassionate one, lover of devotees, if I am dear to you, tell me a hymn of praise to Bhuvaneshwari. The Lord said: Listen, O Goddess, I shall declare the auspicious Bhuvaneshwari Ashtakam, by the mere knowing of which welfare comes to the three worlds. Om. I bow to her who is the support of the world, Bhuvaneshwari, beloved of Shiva, giver of enjoyment and liberation, lovely, delightful and bringer of all good. You are Svaha and Svadha, O Goddess; you are the sacrifice and the mistress of the sacrifice; you are the protector, the remover of darkness, free from both the pervaded and the pervader. You are the foundation and you are the act of worship; you are knowledge, the object of knowledge and the supreme state; you are Shiva, you are Vishnu himself, you are the supreme, imperishable Self. You are both cause and effect; you are Lakshmi and you are the fire; you are the moon, the sun and Time; you are the Creator (Dhata) and you are the wind. You are Gayatri and Savitri; you are Maya and the beloved of Hari; you alone are the one Supreme Power; you alone take the form of the Guru. You are Time and yet beyond all division of time; you alone are the splendour of the worlds; you are every effect and the cause of all, O compassionate one. This is the Ashtakam of the primordial Bhuvaneshwari, O fair-faced Goddess. The mortal who, with a loving heart and faith, recites it at the three twilights — for him the siddhis come under control, prosperity is at his command in the home, and even kings come under his sway by the power of this hymn. Ghosts, goblins, evil spirits and malefic planets do not even look toward his direction. Whatever desire the devotee with a loving heart wishes for, that he obtains by the grace of Bhuvaneshwari. There is no hymn equal to this in the three worlds; it grants every prosperity and is the purifier of even the pure. By accomplishing this excellent hymn, O fair-faced one, riches come under one's command through the grace of Bhuvaneshwari.

Origin & History

Source: Rudrayamala Tantra (Shri Bhuvaneshwari Ashtakam)

Author: Traditional (anonymous); revealed by Shiva in the Rudrayamala dialogue

Period: Medieval Tantric period

Bhuvaneshwari, the fourth Mahavidya, is the Mother Goddess as the queen and very fabric of the manifest universe — the cosmic space (akasha) within which all worlds arise. In the Rudrayamala Tantra the Goddess herself asks Shiva to declare a hymn in her honour as Bhuvaneshwari, and he reveals this Ashtakam, praising her as the support of all that exists. The hymn is widely recited in Shri Vidya and Shakta worship for prosperity, protection and the grace of the Empress of the worlds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Bhuvaneshwari?
Bhuvaneshwari, whose name means 'Empress (Ishwari) of the worlds (Bhuvana)', is the fourth of the ten Mahavidyas. She is the Mother Goddess as the very space and substance of the cosmos, identified with the world itself. Radiant and benign, seated upon a lotus throne, she is the queen who upholds and pervades all creation, and is the bestower of both worldly fullness and liberation.
What is the source of the Bhuvaneshwari Ashtakam?
This eight-verse hymn is drawn from the Rudrayamala Tantra and is set as a dialogue: the Goddess asks Shiva (addressed as the foremost Bhairava) to reveal a hymn of praise to Bhuvaneshwari, and he responds with this Ashtakam, declaring that even knowing it brings welfare to the three worlds.
Why does the hymn identify the Goddess with so many things?
The verses declare that Bhuvaneshwari is Svaha and Svadha, sacrifice and sacrificer, sun, moon and Time, Gayatri and Savitri, cause and effect, even Shiva and Vishnu, and the one Supreme Power. This expresses the central Shakta truth that the Divine Mother is the single conscious power underlying and pervading the entire universe — there is nothing that is not her.
What benefits does reciting this hymn bring?
The phala-shruti promises that one who recites it thrice daily with faith gains control of the siddhis, prosperity at home, and influence even over kings; that ghosts, spirits and malefic planets do not approach; that every cherished desire is fulfilled by her grace; and that there is no hymn equal to it in the three worlds for granting prosperity and purity.
