ಮೂಲ & ಕಥೆ

Devi Mahatmyam / Durga Saptashati (Markandeya Purana) · Sage Markandeya · 5th-6th century CE (Purana compilation)

The Navarna Mantra emerges from the Devi Mahatmyam (also called Durga Saptashati or Chandi Path), a 700-verse text in the Markandeya Purana. It is the bija (seed) mantra that encodes the entire power of the 700 verses in just 9 syllables. Chamunda is the fierce form that emerged during the great battle against the demon army — she is Durga at her most terrifying and protective.

ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಿದಂತೆ

The Devi Mahatmyam narrates: When the demons Chanda and Munda attacked with a vast army, Goddess Kali manifested Chamunda from her forehead — dark as ink, wearing a garland of skulls, laughing terrifyingly. Chamunda devoured the entire demon army and brought the severed heads of Chanda and Munda to Durga. The 'Sarvamangala' verse that concludes Devi worship is considered so powerful that it is inscribed on the walls of Shakti temples across India — its mere presence is said to protect the space from all negativity.
