How to Chant Dhanteras Dhanvantari Mantra & Gayatri
Instructions
On Dhanteras, light a lamp (the first Diwali diya) at dusk, and worship Lord Dhanvantari along with Lakshmi and Kubera. Chant the Dhanvantari mantra and Gayatri, ideally 108 times on a tulsi or rudraksha mala, while meditating on the Lord holding the nectar-pot. Healthcare practitioners and Ayurveda students especially honour him on this day; the mantra may also be chanted over water or medicine, and recited daily for one's own or a loved one's recovery.
Spiritual Significance
Tradition holds that Dhanvantari rose from the churning ocean carrying the very nectar of immortality, and devotees through the ages have testified that sincere chanting of his mantra over water or medicine, especially on Dhanteras, has eased illness, hastened recovery and guarded households from disease through the coming year.
Origin & History
Source: Dhanvantari worship mantras (the Maha-Dhanvantari mantra and the Dhanvantari Gayatri), recited on Dhanteras / Dhanvantari Jayanti
Author: Traditional (Puranic; Dhanvantari Gayatri from the Gayatri tradition)
When the gods and demons churned the ocean of milk (Samudra Manthan) seeking the nectar of immortality, Lord Dhanvantari rose from the waters bearing the pot of amrita. As an avatar of Vishnu and the divine physician, he revealed the science of Ayurveda to the world. His appearance fell on Kartik Krishna Trayodashi, celebrated as Dhanteras and Dhanvantari Jayanti — the opening day of Diwali — when his mantras are chanted for health, healing and prosperity, and lamps are lit to welcome well-being into the home.
