How to Chant Hamsayukta Vimanasthe — Narayani Namostute (The Matrika Forms)
Instructions
Recite before an image of the Devi after lighting a lamp and incense. Chant each verse meditating on the corresponding Matrika form — visualising her weapon, vehicle and posture — and bow inwardly at every 'Narayani Namostute.' These verses are part of the eleventh chapter (Narayani Stuti); they may also be recited as a self-contained nine-verse hymn to the Mother forms.
Spiritual Significance
Devotees hold that reciting these verses surrounds them with the protective power of all the Mother-forms at once — Brahmani's serenity, Vaishnavi's preservation and Chamunda's fierce destruction of evil — so that, as the gods were rescued from the demon armies, the worshipper too is shielded on every side from danger.
Origin & History
Source: Durga Saptashati Chapter 11
Author: Sage Markandeya (Markandeya Purana)
After the Goddess slays the great asura Shumbha, Indra and the gods — their lotus-faces beaming with joy — pour out the Narayani Stuti in praise of Katyayani. In this central portion they salute her in each of her cosmic Mother-forms (the Matrikas), the very energies that had emerged from the gods to fight Raktabija and the demon hosts, recognising that the single Goddess Narayani manifests as Brahmani, Maheshwari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Narasimhi, Aindri, Shivaduti and Chamunda.
