The Kamakhya Stotram is a devotional hymn to Goddess Kamakhya, the presiding deity of the Kamakhya Temple on the Nilachala Hill in Guwahati, Assam — one of the most revered Shakti Peethas and a great centre of Tantra. Each verse hails the Goddess as Kameshwari, the sovereign of desire and the all-pervading Mother, and closes with 'Kameshwari namo'stu te'. It concludes with the famous pranama mantras invoking her as the boon-giving Mother of all the worlds, dwelling on the Blue Mountain.

Kamakhya is the great Goddess of the Kamarupa region, enshrined on Nilachala (the Blue Hill) where, according to the Shakti Peetha tradition, the yoni of Sati fell when her body was scattered across the land. The temple has no image of the deity but a natural cleft in the rock worshipped as the Yoni — the creative womb of the cosmos — kept moist by an underground spring. Hymns such as this Kamakhya Stotram, drawn from the Yogini Tantra and allied Tantric texts, praise her as Kameshwari, the sovereign of desire, and as the all-pervading Mother of the worlds.

Each year during the Ambubachi Mela the spring at Kamakhya is said to turn red, taken by devotees as the sign of the Mother's life-giving power; pilgrims from across India gather to receive her grace, and those who recite her stotram and pranama mantra with faith are believed to be blessed with the fulfilment of long-held desires and the removal of barrenness and misfortune.

विश्वमूर्ते शुभे शुद्धे विरूपाक्षि त्रिलोचने। भीमरूपे शिवे विद्ये कामेश्वरि नमोऽस्तु ते॥२॥
vishvamurte shubhe shuddhe virupakshi trilochane | bhima-rupe shive vidye kameshwari namo'stu te ||2||
Meaning:O one whose form is the universe, auspicious and pure, three-eyed with the uneven eye; fearsome in form, gracious, the embodiment of sacred knowledge — O Kameshwari, salutations to you!
मालाजये जये जम्भे भूताक्षि क्षुभितेऽक्षये। महामाये महेशानि कामेश्वरि नमोऽस्तु ते॥३॥
malajaye jaye jambhe bhutakshi kshubhite'kshaye | maha-maye maheshani kameshwari namo'stu te ||3||
Meaning:O victorious one, conqueror of demons, of formidable eyes, ever-agitating the wicked yet imperishable; O great Maya, supreme sovereign — O Kameshwari, salutations to you!
भीमाक्षि भीषणे देवि सर्वभूतभयङ्करि। कालि च विकरालि च कामेश्वरि नमोऽस्तु ते॥४॥
bhimakshi bhishane devi sarva-bhuta-bhayankari | kali cha vikarali cha kameshwari namo'stu te ||4||
Meaning:O Goddess of terrible eyes and awesome form, who strikes fear into every malignant being, you who are Kali and Vikarali — O Kameshwari, salutations to you!
कालि करालविक्रान्ते कामेश्वरि हरप्रिये। सर्वशास्त्रसारभूते कामेश्वरि नमोऽस्तु ते॥५॥
kali karala-vikrante kameshwari hara-priye | sarva-shastra-sara-bhute kameshwari namo'stu te ||5||
Meaning:O Kali of dreadful prowess, beloved of Hara, the very essence of all scriptures — O Kameshwari, salutations to you!
कामरूपप्रदीपे च नीलकूटनिवासिनि। निशुम्भशुम्भमथनि कामेश्वरि नमोऽस्तु ते॥६॥
kama-rupa-pradipe cha nila-kuta-nivasini | nishumbha-shumbha-mathani kameshwari namo'stu te ||6||
Meaning:O lamp of Kamarupa, dweller on the Blue Hill, destroyer of Shumbha and Nishumbha — O Kameshwari, salutations to you!
कामाख्ये वरदे देवि नीलपर्वतवासिनि। त्वं देवि जगतां माता योनिमुद्रे नमोऽस्तु ते॥
kamakhye varade devi nila-parvata-vasini | tvam devi jagatam mata yoni-mudre namo'stu te ||

How to Chant Kamakhya Stotram
Sit facing the Goddess or her yantra after a bath; light a lamp and offer red flowers, kumkum and (traditionally) red cloth. Recite the verses with attention to the refrain 'Kameshwari namo'stu te', and finish with the pranama mantra 'Kamakhye varade devi...'. As Kamakhya is a Tantric deity, recitation is done with purity and reverence; the mantra is often repeated 9, 27 or 108 times. Worship is held especially auspicious during Navaratri and the Ambubachi festival.
