Meaning

The Sudarshana Mantra invokes the Sudarshana Chakra, the blazing thousand-spoked discus of Lord Vishnu, as a supreme weapon of protection. The core bija mantra 'Om Sahasrara Hum Phat' is sealed by the Kavacha (Hum) and Astra (Phat) seeds, and the longer prayer commands the discus to destroy all hostile spells, weapons, poisons and afflictions and to free the devotee from death. It is among the most powerful mantras chanted for protection from black magic, enemies, disease and negative energies.

Origin & Story

Sudarshana upasana of the Pancharatra and Sri Vaishnava tantric tradition (Sudarshana Kavacha / Homa mantras) · Unknown (traditional Pancharatra Agama tradition) · Ancient

The Sudarshana Chakra is the personified discus-weapon of Lord Vishnu, worshipped in the Pancharatra Agama tradition as a fierce protective deity (Sudarshana Murti / Chakrattazhwar) with sixteen arms, standing within a hexagram of flames. Its mantras are employed in the Sudarshana Homam, a fire ritual performed to destroy black magic, hostile spells, disease and danger. The seed 'Hum Phat' combines the armour and weapon bijas, making this one of the most powerful protective invocations in Vaishnava practice.

As told in scripture

Tradition holds that wherever the Sudarshana Chakra's mantra is invoked with faith, no spell, poison or weapon can prevail — for Vishnu sent the same discus to guard Ambarisha when the sage Durvasa's fiery curse pursued him, and the curse, unable to harm the devotee, returned to its sender. Devotees recite it to dissolve black magic and reverse harm directed at them.
