ਸ਼ਤੇਸ਼ੁ ਜਾਯਤੇ ਸ਼ੂਰਃ ਸਹਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ੁ ਚ ਪਣ੍ਡਿਤਃ। ਵਕ੍ਤਾ ਦਸ਼ਸਹਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਭਵਤਿ ਵਾ ਨ ਵਾ॥

śateṣu jāyate śūraḥ sahasreṣu ca paṇḍitaḥ। vaktā daśa-sahasreṣu dātā bhavati vā na vā॥

ਅਰਥ:Among a hundred men a hero is born; among a thousand, a scholar; among ten thousand, a great orator — but a true giver may or may not exist at all. The verse ranks human virtues by their rarity, placing genuine generosity highest of all, so uncommon that it cannot be counted on to appear even among multitudes.
