ઉત્પત્તિ અને કથા

Traditional Shakta hymn associated with the Vindhyavasini Devi of Vindhyachal (Devi Mahatmya / Markandeya Purana tradition) · Unknown (traditional) · Medieval

In the Devi Mahatmya, the gods, oppressed by the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha, pray to the Goddess. From the body of Parvati emerges the radiant Kaushiki, who, as Vindhyavasini, takes her seat upon the Vindhya mountains and destroys the demon hosts including Chanda, Munda, Shumbha and Nishumbha. This stotram celebrates that ever-victorious Mother of the Vindhyas, whose shrine at Vindhyachal is one of the most revered Shakti Peethas of northern India.

શાસ્ત્રોમાં કહ્યા પ્રમાણે

Devotees of the Vindhyachal Shakti Peetha hold that sincere recitation of this stotram, with its plea to the 'remover of poverty and sorrow,' has lifted families out of hardship and shielded travellers from danger, the Goddess answering as the protectress who 'dwells in every home.'

Vindhyavasini ('she who dwells in the Vindhyas') is a form of Goddess Durga celebrated in the Devi Mahatmya, where she is born to slay the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha. Her chief shrine is the Vindhyachal Shakti Peetha in Uttar Pradesh, India.
It means 'I worship Vindhyavasini'. Every verse of the stotram closes with this phrase, so the whole hymn becomes a repeated, heartfelt act of worship of the Goddess.
Tuesdays and Fridays are traditionally dedicated to the Goddess, and Navaratri is especially auspicious. It is also chanted during pilgrimage to Vindhyachal and as a daily prayer for protection and prosperity.
The opening verse refers to the slaying of Shumbha, Nishumbha, Chanda and Munda — the central episodes of the third charita of the Devi Mahatmya (Durga Saptashati). Vindhyavasini is identified with that victorious form of the Goddess.
