Meaning:आयु, कर्म (नियत कार्य), धन, विद्या और मृत्यु — ये पाँचों बातें जीव के गर्भ में रहते ही निश्चित हो जाती हैं। चाणक्य सिखाते हैं कि जीवन की मूल रूपरेखा जन्म से पहले ही तय हो जाती है, इसलिए बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति न तो सौभाग्य पर अभिमान करता है और न ही नियत बातों की चिन्ता में टूटता है।
