Shri Rang Avadhoot Maharaj was a renowned Datta-bhakta who established his ashram at Nareshwar on the banks of the Narmada. Out of his intense love for Lord Dattatreya he composed the Datta Bavani — fifty-two verses in simple, fervent Gujarati that pour out total surrender to Datta as the all-sustaining, compassionate Avadhuta and the very form of the Trimurti. The hymn spread rapidly among devotees and is now recited daily in countless homes and at Datta temples, especially in Gujarat and Maharashtra, as a prayer for refuge, protection and the grace of the Sadguru.

The Datta tradition holds that wherever the Datta Bavani is recited with faith, Lord Datta swiftly removes the devotee's calamities — countless followers of Shri Rang Avadhoot Maharaj relate how recitation during illness, danger or crisis brought sudden relief and protection, true to its promise that Datta is 'the deliverer of all who take refuge in him'.

ಯಾವುದೇ ಸಾಲನ್ನು ಅಥವಾ ▶ ಬಟನ್ ಒತ್ತಿ ಕೇಳಿ
ಜಯ ಯೋಗೀಶ್ವರ ದತ್ತ ದಯಾಳ। ತುಂ ಜ ಏಕ ಜಗಮಾಂ ಪ್ರತಿಪಾಳ॥ ಅತ್ರ್ಯನಸೂಯಾ ಕರೀ ನಿಮಿತ್ತ। ಪ್ರಗಟ್ಯೋ ಜಗಕಾರಣ ನಿಶ್ಚಿತ್ತ॥
Jaya Yogishvara Datta Dayaal. Tun ja eka jagamaan pratipaal. Atryanasuyaa kari nimitta. Pragatyo jagakaarana nishchitta.
ಅರ್ಥ:हे योगियों के स्वामी दत्त, दयालु! आपकी जय हो — इस जगत् में एकमात्र आप ही पालनकर्ता हैं। अत्रि और अनसूया को निमित्त बनाकर आप निश्चय ही जगत् के कारणरूप में प्रकट हुए।
ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಹರಿಹರನೋ ಅವತಾರ। ಶರಣಾಗತನೋ ತಾರಣಹಾರ॥ ಅಂತರ್ಯಾಮೀ ಸತ್ಚಿತಸುಖ। ಬಹಾರ ಧರಾ ಬಹುವಿಧ ಸುಖದುಃಖ॥
Brahma-Hari-Hara-no avataar. Sharanaagata-no taaranahaar. Antaryaami Sat-Chit-Sukha. Bahaar dharaa bahuvidha sukha-duhkha.
ಅರ್ಥ:आप ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और शिव के अवतार हैं, शरणागत के तारणहार हैं। अन्तर्यामी रूप में आप सत्-चित्-सुख हैं; बाहर आप अनेक प्रकार के सुख-दुःख धारण करते हैं।
ವಾಡೇ ಘೇರ ಕೇ ರಾನಮಾಂ। ರಹೋ ಛೋ ಚೈತನ್ಯ ರೂಪಮಾಂ॥ ಸಹಾಯ ಕರೋ ಸದಾ ಸರ್ವ ಠಾಮ। ಅಗಣಿತ ರೂಪೇ ಅಗಣಿತ ನಾಮ॥
Vaade gher ke raanamaan. Raho chho Chaitanya roopamaan. Sahaaya karo sadaa sarva thaam. Aganita roope aganita naam.
ಅರ್ಥ:बगीचे में, घर में या वन में — आप चैतन्यरूप में विराजते हैं। आप सदा सर्वत्र सहायता करते हैं, अगणित रूपों और अगणित नामों से।
ಮಾತಾ ತುಂ ನೇ ಪಿತಾ ತುಂ ಜ। ಬಂಧು ತುಂ ನೇ ಸಖಾ ತುಂ ಜ॥ ತ್ರಿಗುಣಾತೀತ ತ್ರಿಗುಣಸ್ವರೂಪ। ಅಕಲ ಅರೂಪ ನೇ ಬಹುರೂಪ॥
Maataa tun ne pitaa tun ja. Bandhu tun ne sakhaa tun ja. Trigunaateeta triguna-svaroopa. Akala aroopa ne bahuroopa.
ಅರ್ಥ:आप ही माता और आप ही पिता हैं; आप ही बन्धु और आप ही सखा हैं। आप त्रिगुणातीत हैं फिर भी त्रिगुणस्वरूप हैं — अकल, अरूप और बहुरूप हैं।
ತುಜ ವಿಣ ಭಟಕ್ಯೋ ಬಹು ಬಹು ದೂರ। ಹವೇ ಚರಣೇ ರಾಖ್ಯೋ ಜರೂರ॥ ಪ್ರೇಮೇ ಪುಕಾರುಂ ದಿನರಾತ। ದತ್ತ ದತ್ತ ಬಸ ಏಕ ಜ ವಾತ॥
Tuja vina bhatakyo bahu bahu door. Have charane raakhyo jaroor. Preme pukaarun dinaraata. Datta Datta basa eka ja vaata.
ಅರ್ಥ:आपके बिना मैं बहुत-बहुत दूर भटका; अब अवश्य मुझे अपने चरणों में रखिए। दिन-रात मैं प्रेम से पुकारता हूँ — 'दत्त, दत्त' — बस यही मेरी एक बात है।
ವೇದ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ ಪುರಾಣ ಪ್ರಮಾಣ। ತಾರಕ ಮಂತ್ರ ಏ ದತ್ತಪ್ರಮಾಣ॥ ಗುರು ಬಿನ ಜ್ಞಾನ ನ ಕೋ ಪಾವೇ। ದತ್ತಕೃಪಾ ವಿಣ ನ ಕಳಾವೇ॥
Veda Shaastra Puraana pramaana. Taaraka mantra e Datta-pramaana. Guru bina jnaana na ko paave. Datta-kripaa vina na kalaave.
ಅರ್ಥ:वेद, शास्त्र और पुराण प्रमाण हैं; तारक मंत्र दत्त के प्रमाण से ही है। गुरु के बिना कोई ज्ञान नहीं पाता, और दत्त की कृपा के बिना वह प्रकट नहीं होता।
ಜಯ ಜಯ ಕಾರುಣಿಕ ಅವಧೂತ। ತಾರಕ ತರಣ ತ್ರಿಗುಣಾತೀತ॥ ಅನಸೂಯಾತ್ಮಜ ದಿಗಂಬರ। ದತ್ತ ದಿಗಂಬರ ದತ್ತ ದಿಗಂಬರ॥
Jaya jaya kaarunika Avadhoota. Taaraka tarana trigunaateeta. Anasuyaatmaja Digambara. Datta Digambara Datta Digambara.
ಅರ್ಥ:करुणामय अवधूत की जय हो, जय हो — तारक, तारण और त्रिगुणातीत। हे अनसूयानन्दन दिगम्बर — दत्त दिगम्बर, दत्त दिगम्बर!
ಜಯ ಗಿರನಾರೀ ಅವಧೂತ। ಶ್ರೀ ಗುರುದತ್ತ ದಿಗಂಬರ ಸೂತ॥ ಭಾವೇ ಭಜೇ ಜೇ ನರನಾರ। ತೇನೇ ತಾರೇ ಏ ಭವಪಾರ॥
Jaya Giranaari Avadhoota. Shri Gurudatta Digambara soota. Bhaave bhaje je nara-naara. Tene taare e bhavapaara.
ಅರ್ಥ:गिरनार के अवधूत की जय हो, श्री गुरुदत्त दिगम्बर सुत की जय। जो नर-नारी भाव से उनका भजन करते हैं, उन्हें वे भवसागर से पार उतार देते हैं।

दत्त बावनी ಪಾರಾಯಣ ವಿಧಿ
Sit before an image of Lord Dattatreya, ideally after a bath, and light a lamp. Recite the Datta Bavani with feeling and full surrender, dwelling on the refrain 'Datta Digambara Datta Digambara'. Many devotees keep a vow of reciting it daily, or 11/21 times during difficulties; in the Rang Avadhoot tradition it is read as a single unbroken prayer of fifty-two verses. Conclude by bowing and asking Datta to keep you at his feet.
