The Vajra Kavacham belongs to the rich protective literature of the Datta-sampradaya, in which Lord Dattatreya — the avadhuta union of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva — is invoked as an invincible shield. Cast in the classic form of an anga-rakshana (limb-by-limb protection), it summons the Lord, who pervades the sahasrara, the senses and all the directions, to guard the devotee completely. The tradition holds that this 'thunderbolt armour' was first sung to the celestial sage Narada and has since been recited by Datta devotees for protection from every kind of danger and disease.

The Datta tradition abounds with accounts of devotees who, wearing this 'vajra' armour through daily recitation, were shielded from accidents, illness, hostile sorcery and grave danger — for the Kavacha itself declares that even those parts left unguarded are ever protected by the sky-clad Dattatreya, who never abandons one who takes refuge in him.

ಯಾವುದೇ ಸಾಲನ್ನು ಅಥವಾ ▶ ಬಟನ್ ಒತ್ತಿ ಕೇಳಿ
ಓಂ ದತ್ತಾತ್ರೇಯ ಶಿರಃ ಪಾತು ಸಹಸ್ರಾಬ್ಜೇಷು ಸಂಸ್ಥಿತಃ। ಭಾಲಂ ಪಾತ್ವಾನಸೂಯೇಯಶ್ಚನ್ದ್ರಮಣ್ಡಲಮಧ್ಯಗಃ॥

ಅರ್ಥ:ॐ। सहस्रदल कमल में विराजमान भगवान् दत्तात्रेय मेरे सिर की रक्षा करें; चन्द्रमण्डल के मध्य में स्थित अनसूयानन्दन मेरे भाल की रक्षा करें॥
ಕೂರ್ಚಂ ಮನೋಮಯಃ ಪಾತು ಹಂ ಕ್ಷಂ ದ್ವಿದಲಪದ್ಮಭೂಃ। ಜ್ಯೋತೀರೂಪೋಽಕ್ಷಿಣೀ ಪಾತು ಪಾತು ಶಬ್ದಾತ್ಮಕಃ ಶ್ರುತೀ॥
Koorcham mano-mayah paatu Ham Ksham dvi-dala-padma-bhooh. Jyoti-roopo'kshinee paatu paatu shabdaatmakah shrutee.
ಅರ್ಥ:जो मनःस्वरूप, हं-क्षं बीजों सहित द्विदल कमल में उदित हैं, वे भ्रूमध्य की रक्षा करें; ज्योतिःस्वरूप मेरे नेत्रों की रक्षा करें, और शब्दात्मक मेरे कानों की रक्षा करें॥
ನಾಸಿಕಾಂ ಪಾತು ಗನ್ಧಾತ್ಮಾ ಮುಖಂ ಪಾತು ರಸಾತ್ಮಕಃ। ಜಿಹ್ವಾಂ ವೇದಾತ್ಮಕಃ ಪಾತು ದನ್ತೋಷ್ಠೌ ಪಾತು ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕಃ॥
Naasikaam paatu gandhaatmaa mukham paatu rasaatmakah. Jihvaam vedaatmakah paatu dantoshthau paatu dhaarmikah.
ಅರ್ಥ:गन्धात्मक मेरी नासिका की रक्षा करें; रसात्मक मेरे मुख की रक्षा करें; वेदात्मक मेरी जिह्वा की रक्षा करें; और धार्मिक मेरे दाँत-ओठों की रक्षा करें॥
ಕಪೋಲಾವತ್ರಿಭೂಃ ಪಾತು ಪಾತ್ವಶೇಷಂ ಮಮಾತ್ಮವಿತ್। ಸರ್ವಾಙ್ಗಂ ಪಾತು ಸರ್ವೇಶಃ ಸರ್ವಗಃ ಸರ್ವತೋಮುಖಃ॥
Kapolaav-Atri-bhooh paatu paatv-ashesham mam-aatma-vit. Sarvaangam paatu Sarveshah Sarva-gah sarvato-mukhah.
ಅರ್ಥ:अत्रिनन्दन मेरे कपोलों की रक्षा करें, और मेरा आत्मवेत्ता शेष समस्त की रक्षा करें; सर्वव्यापी, सर्वतोमुख सर्वेश मेरे सम्पूर्ण अंग की रक्षा करें॥
ರಕ್ಷಾಹೀನಂ ತು ಯತ್ಸ್ಥಾನಂ ವರ್ಜಿತಂ ಕವಚೇನ ತು। ತತ್ಸರ್ವಂ ಮೇ ಸದಾ ಪಾತು ದತ್ತಾತ್ರೇಯೋ ದಿಗಮ್ಬರಃ॥
Rakshaa-heenam tu yat-sthaanam varjitam kavachena tu. Tat-sarvam me sadaa paatu Dattaatreyo Digambarah.
ಅರ್ಥ:जो भी स्थान रक्षारहित रह गया और इस कवच द्वारा छूट गया — उन सबकी सदा रक्षा दिगम्बर दत्तात्रेय करें॥
ಇನ್ದ್ರಾದಿದಿಕ್ಷು ಮಾಂ ಪಾತು ಶಙ್ಖಚಕ್ರಗದಾಧರಃ। ವಜ್ರಿಣಂ ವಾರುಣೀಶಂ ಚ ಪಾತು ಪಾಶಧರೋ ಹರಿಃ॥
Indraadi-dikshu maam paatu Shankha-chakra-gadaa-dharah. Vajrinam Vaaruneesham cha paatu paasha-dharo Harih.
ಅರ್ಥ:शंख-चक्र-गदाधारी इन्द्रादि दिशाओं में मेरी रक्षा करें; पाशधारी हरि वहाँ रक्षा करें जहाँ वज्रधारी (इन्द्र) और वरुणेश विराजते हैं॥
ಇದಂ ತು ಕವಚಂ ದಿವ್ಯಂ ವಜ್ರಕಲ್ಪಂ ಮಹಾದ್ಭುತಮ್। ದತ್ತಾತ್ರೇಯಸ್ಯ ಯೋಗೀನ್ದ್ರ ನಾರದಾಯ ಪುರಾ ಜಗೌ॥
Idam tu kavacham divyam vajra-kalpam mahaadbhutam. Dattaatreyasya yogeendra Naaradaaya puraa jagau.
ಅರ್ಥ:यह दिव्य, महाद्भुत, वज्र के समान दृढ़ कवच — योगीन्द्र दत्तात्रेय का वज्रकवच है — जिसे प्राचीन काल में नारद को सुनाया गया था॥

Believed to heal illness, since Datta is praised as the remover of all afflictions

श्रीदत्तात्रेय वज्रकवचम् ಪಾರಾಯಣ ವಿಧಿ
Sit facing east before an image of Lord Dattatreya, after a bath, and light a lamp. Recite the Vajra Kavacham slowly, mentally placing Datta's protection on each part of the body as it is named (anga-nyasa). It is ideally chanted in the morning to armour the whole day, and may also be recited before travel or in times of danger. Conclude by surrendering oneself wholly to the protection of the sky-clad Lord.
