Stotra composed by Adi Shankaracharya in praise of Goddess Meenakshi of Madurai · Adi Shankaracharya · 8th century CE (circa 788-820)
Adi Shankaracharya, in his travels across India re-establishing the Vedic path, visited the famous Meenakshi-Sundareshwara temple at Madurai in the Pandya country. Beholding the supreme Mother as Meenakshi — the fish-eyed Goddess who is also Shri Vidya enthroned in the Sri Chakra — he poured out this five-jewelled hymn (pancha-ratna). Each verse paints her form, her ornaments and her cosmic glory, always returning to the refrain of bowing to the 'ocean of compassion'. The hymn has since become a beloved part of daily Devi worship in South Indian temples and homes.

Devotees of Madurai hold that sincere recitation of the Meenakshi Pancharatnam, like the prayers Shankaracharya offered, draws the direct grace of the Mother — bestowing fearlessness, clarity of knowledge and the fulfilment of righteous wishes, just as the verse promises her as the 'granter of every desired fruit'.

અર્થ:मैं उन करुणा-सागरस्वरूपा मीनाक्षी को सदा प्रणाम करता हूँ — जो उदित होते सहस्र कोटि सूर्यों के समान तेजस्वी हैं, केयूर और हारों से सुशोभित, बिम्बफल-सदृश अधरों वाली, मुस्कान में चमकती दन्तपंक्ति से मनोहर, पीताम्बर से अलंकृत; जिनके चरण विष्णु, ब्रह्मा और इन्द्र सेवते हैं, जो तत्त्वस्वरूपा एवं शिवा (शिवप्रिया) हैं।
મુક્તાહારલસત્કિરીટરુચિરાં પૂર્ણેન્દુવક્ત્રપ્રભાં શિઞ્જન્નૂપુરકિઙ્કિણીમણિધરાં પદ્મપ્રભાભાસુરામ્ । સર્વાભીષ્ટફલપ્રદાં ગિરિસુતાં વાણીરમાસેવિતાં મીનાક્ષીં પ્રણતોઽસ્મિ સન્તતમહં કારુણ્યવારાંનિધિમ્ ॥ ૨॥
muktāhāralasatkirīṭarucirāṃ pūrṇenduvaktraprabhāṃ śiñjannūpurakiṅkiṇīmaṇidharāṃ padmaprabhābhāsurām | sarvābhīṣṭaphalapradāṃ girisutāṃ vāṇīramāsevitāṃ mīnākṣīṃ praṇato'smi santatamahaṃ kāruṇyavārāṃnidhim || 2||
અર્થ:मैं उन करुणा-सागरस्वरूपा मीनाक्षी को सदा प्रणाम करता हूँ — जो मोतियों के हारों से दीप्त किरीट से सुशोभित, पूर्णचन्द्र-सदृश मुखकान्ति वाली, रुनझुन करते मणिजड़ित नूपुर धारण किए, कमल-सी प्रभा से देदीप्यमान हैं; जो समस्त अभीष्ट फल देने वाली, गिरिराज की पुत्री, तथा सरस्वती और लक्ष्मी से सेवित हैं।
શ્રીવિદ્યાં શિવવામભાગનિલયાં હ્રીંકારમન્ત્રોજ્જ્વલાં શ્રીચક્રાઙ્કિતબિન્દુમધ્યવસતિં શ્રીમત્સભાનાયિકામ્ । શ્રીમત્ષણ્મુખવિઘ્નરાજજનનીં શ્રીમજ્જગન્મોહિનીં મીનાક્ષીં પ્રણતોઽસ્મિ સન્તતમહં કારુણ્યવારાંનિધિમ્ ॥ ૩॥
śrīvidyāṃ śivavāmabhāganilayāṃ hrīṃkāramantrojjvalāṃ śrīcakrāṅkitabindumadhyavasatiṃ śrīmatsabhānāyikām | śrīmatṣaṇmukhavighnarājajananīṃ śrīmajjaganmohinīṃ mīnākṣīṃ praṇato'smi santatamahaṃ kāruṇyavārāṃnidhim || 3||
અર્થ:मैं उन करुणा-सागरस्वरूपा मीनाक्षी को सदा प्रणाम करता हूँ — जो साक्षात् श्रीविद्या हैं, शिव के वामभाग में निवास करती हैं, ह्रींकार मन्त्र से उज्ज्वल, श्रीचक्र के मध्य बिन्दु में विराजमान, दिव्य सभा की अधिनायिका; षण्मुख (स्कन्द) और विघ्नराज (गणेश) की माता, और समस्त जगत् को मोहित करने वाली हैं।
શ્રીમત્સુન્દરનાયિકાં ભયહરાં જ્ઞાનપ્રદાં નિર્મલાં શ્યામાભાં કમલાસનાર્ચિતપદાં નારાયણસ્યાનુજામ્ । વીણાવેણુમૃદઙ્ગવાદ્યરસિકાં નાનાવિધામમ્બિકાં મીનાક્ષીં પ્રણતોઽસ્મિ સન્તતમહં કારુણ્યવારાંનિધિમ્ ॥ ૪॥
śrīmatsundaranāyikāṃ bhayaharāṃ jñānapradāṃ nirmalāṃ śyāmābhāṃ kamalāsanārcitapadāṃ nārāyaṇasyānujām | vīṇāveṇumṛdaṅgavādyarasikāṃ nānāvidhāmambikāṃ mīnākṣīṃ praṇato'smi santatamahaṃ kāruṇyavārāṃnidhim || 4||
અર્થ:मैं उन करुणा-सागरस्वरूपा मीनाक्षी को सदा प्रणाम करता हूँ — जो सुन्दर अधिनायिका, भय हरने वाली, ज्ञान देने वाली और निर्मल हैं; श्यामवर्ण कान्ति वाली, जिनके चरण कमलासन ब्रह्मा द्वारा अर्चित हैं, नारायण की अनुजा; जो वीणा, वेणु और मृदंग के वाद्य में रसमग्न रहने वाली, अनेक रूपों वाली अम्बिका हैं।
નાનાયોગિમુનીન્દ્રહૃન્નિવસતીં નાનાર્થસિદ્ધિપ્રદાં નાનાપુષ્પવિરાજિતાંઘ્રિયુગલાં નારાયણેનાર્ચિતામ્ । નાદબ્રહ્મમયીં પરાત્પરતરાં નાનાર્થતત્ત્વાત્મિકાં મીનાક્ષીં પ્રણતોઽસ્મિ સન્તતમહં કારુણ્યવારાંનિધિમ્ ॥ ૫॥
nānāyogimunīndrahṛnnivasatīṃ nānārthasiddhipradāṃ nānāpuṣpavirājitāṃghriyugalāṃ nārāyaṇenārcitām | nādabrahmamayīṃ parātparatarāṃ nānārthatattvātmikāṃ mīnākṣīṃ praṇato'smi santatamahaṃ kāruṇyavārāṃnidhim || 5||
અર્થ:मैं उन करुणा-सागरस्वरूपा मीनाक्षी को सदा प्रणाम करता हूँ — जो अनेक योगियों और मुनीन्द्रों के हृदय में निवास करती हैं, अनेक अर्थ-सिद्धियाँ प्रदान करती हैं; जिनके युगल चरण नाना पुष्पों से सुशोभित और नारायण द्वारा अर्चित हैं; जो नादब्रह्ममयी, परात्पर से भी परे, तथा समस्त अर्थ-तत्त्वों की आत्मास्वरूपा हैं।

मीनाक्षी पञ्चरत्नम् જપ વિધિ
Bathe and sit facing east or north before an image of Goddess Meenakshi or a Sri Chakra. Light a lamp and incense, and recite the five verses slowly and melodiously with devotion, dwelling on each 'Meenakshim pranato'smi' refrain as a heartfelt bow. It may be chanted once daily, or in cycles of 5 or 9 rounds during special worship. Conclude with a silent prayer to the Mother for grace, wisdom and protection.
