The Panchatantra teaches niti and worldly wisdom through animal fables. This verse uses the figure of the lion, the natural king of the forest, to argue that sovereignty and greatness are not conferred by ceremony but earned by valour. It has become one of the most quoted Sanskrit maxims on merit and the self-made rise to leadership.

ನಾಭಿಷೇಕೋ ನ ಸಂಸ್ಕಾರಃ ಸಿಂಹಸ್ಯ ಕ್ರಿಯತೇ ವನೇ। ವಿಕ್ರಮಾರ್ಜಿತಸತ್ತ್ವಸ್ಯ ಸ್ವಯಮೇವ ಮೃಗೇನ್ದ್ರತಾ॥

nābhiṣeko na saṁskāraḥ siṁhasya kriyate vane। vikramārjita-sattvasya svayam eva mṛgendratā॥

ಅರ್ಥ:वन में सिंह का न तो राज्याभिषेक किया जाता है, न कोई संस्कार; जिसका सामर्थ्य पराक्रम से अर्जित है, उसे मृगराज (पशुओं का राजा) होने का पद स्वयं ही प्राप्त हो जाता है। यह श्लोक सिखाता है कि सच्ची श्रेष्ठता को किसी औपचारिक नियुक्ति की आवश्यकता नहीं — योग्यता और पराक्रम स्वाभाविक रूप से नेता बना देते हैं, जैसे सिंह बिना किसी राज्याभिषेक के राज करता है।

Recite the verse with spirit, picturing the lion who rules the forest by his valour alone. Let it strengthen your resolve to earn respect and standing through your own merit rather than waiting for recognition. It is often invoked to inspire courage and self-reliance in the young and the ambitious.

ಪದೇ ಪದೇ ಕೇಳುವ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳು

ಹೌದು — ಲಿಪಿ ಮಾತ್ರ ಬದಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ; ಪದಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಅವುಗಳ ಅರ್ಥ ಮೂಲವೇ. ಈ ಪುಟದ ಶ್ಲೋಕ-ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಅರ್ಥ, ಪ್ರಯೋಜನಗಳು, ಪಾರಾಯಣ ವಿಧಿ ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಅನ್ವಯಿಸುತ್ತವೆ.

It means: 'The lion of the forest undergoes no coronation and no ceremony; for one whose power is won by valour, the kingship of beasts arises by itself.' True greatness needs no formal appointment.

It teaches that real leadership and excellence are earned by one's own strength and prowess, not bestowed by rituals or titles. Like the lion, the truly capable rise to the top naturally.

It is a celebrated subhashita from the Panchatantra, the classical Sanskrit collection of niti fables by Vishnu Sharma, and is widely quoted in the literature on merit, valour and self-made greatness.
