Kirtana of Bhadrachala Ramadasa in raga Nadanamakriya, Adi tala (Telugu, 17th century CE) · Bhadrachala Ramadasa (Kancherla Gopanna) · c. 1620-1688 CE
Ramadasa built Rama's temple at Bhadrachalam and paid for it with twelve years in the Golconda dungeon. His kirtanas from those years swing between complaint and adoration; this one stands at the still point — the recognition that no effort of his own could ferry him across the sea of birth and death, and that the mercy of the lotus-eyed Lord must do it. Bhajan traditions across South India have sung it ever since.

Tradition holds that Rama himself, with Lakshmana, redeemed Ramadasa from prison by paying his debt in divine coin — mercy answering exactly the question this song asks, 'in what manner will you show me your grace?' Devotees of the bhajan sampradaya sing it at dawn, and say the Name repeated at each line's end carries the singer over troubles the way the Lord's bridge crossed the sea.

ē tīruga nanu daya cūcedavō, inavaṃśōttama rāmā nā taramā bhava sāgaramīdanu, nalina dalēkṣaṇa rāmā ॥ ē tīruga ॥
അർഥം:किस रीति से तुम मुझ पर दया-दृष्टि करोगे, हे सूर्यवंश-शिरोमणि राम? क्या यह मेरे बस की बात है कि भवसागर तैर जाऊँ, हे कमल-दल-नयन राम?
ശ്രീ രഘു നന്ദന സീതാ രമണാ, ശ്രിതജന പോഷക രാമാ കാരുണ്യാലയ ഭക്ത വരദ നിനു, കന്നദി കാനുപു രാമാ ॥ ഏ തീരുഗ ॥

അർഥം:हे रघुकुल-नंदन, सीता-रमण, आश्रितजनों के पोषक राम; हे करुणा के धाम, भक्तों को वर देनेवाले — तुम्हीं मेरी जननी हो और तुम्हीं मेरे नयनों का सर्वस्व, हे राम।
ക്രൂരകര്മമുലു നേരക ചേസിതി, നേരമുലെഞ്ചകു രാമാ ദാരിദ്ര്യമു പരിഹാരമു സേയവേ, ദൈവ ശിഖാമണി രാമാ ॥ ഏ തീരുഗ ॥
krūrakarmamulu nēraka cēsiti, nēramuleñcaku rāmā dāridryamu parihāramu sēyavē, daiva śikhāmaṇi rāmā ॥ ē tīruga ॥
അർഥം:अनजाने मैंने क्रूर कर्म कर डाले — मेरे अपराध मत गिनो, हे राम। मेरी इस दरिद्रता का परिहार करो, हे देव-शिखामणि राम।
വാസവനുത രാമദാസ പോഷക വന്ദന-മയോധ്യ രാമാ ദാസാര്ചിത മാകഭയ-മൊസങ്ഗവേ ദാശരഥീ രഘുരാമാ ॥ ഏ തീരുഗ ॥
vāsavanuta rāmadāsa pōṣaka vandana-mayōdhya rāmā dāsārcita mākabhaya-mosaṅgavē dāśarathī raghurāmā ॥ ē tīruga ॥
അർഥം:हे इंद्र-वंदित, रामदास के पालक राम — अयोध्या के राम, तुम्हें प्रणाम! अपनी अर्चना करनेवाले इस दास को अभय दो, हे दाशरथी रघुराम।
ഗുരുഡവു നാ മദി ദൈവമു നീവനി ഗുരുശാസ്ത്രമ്ബുലു രാമാ ഗുരുദൈവമ്ബനി യെരുഗക തിരിഗെഡു ക്രൂരുഡനൈതിനി രാമാ ॥ ഏ തീരുഗ ॥
guruḍavu nā madi daivamu nīvani guruśāstrambulu rāmā gurudaivambani yerugaka tirigeḍu krūruḍanaitini rāmā ॥ ē tīruga ॥
അർഥം:गुरु-शास्त्र कहते हैं — 'गुरु ही तुम्हारे हृदय का दैवत है', हे राम; गुरु को दैवत न पहचानकर मैं भटकता फिरा और क्रूर बन बैठा, हे राम।
നിണ്ഡിതി വീ വഖിലാണ്ഡ കോടി ബ്രഹ്മാണ്ഡമുലന്ദുന രാമാ നിണ്ഡുഗ മദി നീ നാമമു ദലചിന നിത്യാനന്ദമു രാമാ ॥ ഏ തീരുഗ ॥
niṇḍiti vī vakhilāṇḍa kōṭi brahmāṇḍamulanduna rāmā niṇḍuga madi nī nāmamu dalacina nityānandamu rāmā ॥ ē tīruga ॥
അർഥം:तुम समस्त ब्रह्मांडों की कोटि-कोटि सृष्टियों में परिपूर्ण हो, हे राम; और भरे हृदय से तुम्हारा नाम स्मरण करते ही नित्य आनंद मिलता है, हे राम।
വാസവ കമല ഭവാസുരവന്ദിത വാരധി ബന്ധന രാമാ ഭാസുര വര സദ്ഗുണമുലു കല്ഗിന ഭദ്രാദ്രീശ്വര രാമാ ॥ ഏ തീരുഗ ॥
vāsava kamala bhavāsuravandita vāradhi bandhana rāmā bhāsura vara sadguṇamulu kalgina bhadrādrīśvara rāmā ॥ ē tīruga ॥
അർഥം:हे इंद्र, कमलभव ब्रह्मा और देवताओं से वंदित राम; समुद्र पर सेतु बाँधनेवाले राम; उज्ज्वल श्रेष्ठ सद्गुणों से विभूषित हे भद्राद्रि के ईश्वर राम!

അർഥം:बड़े चाव से मैंने पहले ही कह दिया — 'तुम मेरे स्वामी हो', हे राम; अब भूलना मत, मुझ पर अपना स्नेह-मान बनाए रखना — मैं तुम्हारी शरण में आ छिपा हूँ, हे राम। किस रीति से मुझ पर दया करोगे, हे सूर्यवंशोत्तम राम — क्या मैं अपने बल से यह भवसागर पार कर सकता हूँ, हे कमलनयन राम?

Sung in the plaintive Nadanamakriya, it is a balm in guilt, poverty and fear, and a favourite of bhajan sampradaya.

Sing as a wave of question and surrender: each line ends by calling 'Rama', so let the Name toll like a bell throughout. Offer the charanams one by one — confession, plea, homage — and close with the refrain, leaving the crossing of the ocean entirely to him. Traditionally in raga Nadanamakriya, Adi tala.
