The Vastoshpati Sukta of the Rig Veda is a prayer to the guardian spirit of the homestead. In later tradition this deity is identified with the Vastu Purusha — born, according to the Matsya and other Puranas, when a great being arising from Shiva's perspiration (or from a slain demon) was pinned face-down to the earth by the gods, who each took their place upon his body. Pleased, the gods granted that he would forever preside over dwellings, and that whoever honoured him with the Vastu Shanti before building or entering a home would prosper. These Vedic verses remain the heart of that ceremony, invoking the lord of the dwelling for protection and abundance.

Tradition holds that a home consecrated with the Vastu Shanti homa and these verses is shielded from misfortune and disease, its Vastu doshas pacified, so that wealth, health and harmony grow within it as a father's care nurtures his children.
ਅਰਥ ਸਹਿਤ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਠ
ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਪੰਗਤੀ ਜਾਂ ▶ ਬਟਨ ਨੂੰ ਛੂਹ ਕੇ ਸੁਣੋ
ਵਾਸ੍ਤੋਸ਼੍ਪਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਜਾਨੀਹ੍ਯਸ੍ਮਾਨ੍ਤ੍ਸ੍ਵਾਵੇਸ਼ੋ ਅਨਮੀਵੋ ਭਵਾ ਨਃ। ਯਤ੍ਤ੍ਵੇਮਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਤਨ੍ਨੋ ਜੁਸ਼ਸ੍ਵ ਸ਼ਂ ਨੋ ਭਵ ਦ੍ਵਿਪਦੇ ਸ਼ਂ ਚਤੁਸ਼੍ਪਦੇ॥
Vāstoṣpate prati jānīhy asmān svāveśo anamīvo bhavā naḥ। Yat tvemahe prati tan no juṣasva śaṁ no bhava dvipade śaṁ catuṣpade॥
ਅਰਥ:हे वास्तोष्पते (गृह के अधिष्ठाता देव), हमें अपना मानकर स्वीकार करो; हमारे लिए सुखद-निवास्य और रोगरहित बनो। हम जो भी तुमसे माँगें, उसे कृपापूर्वक प्रदान करो; हमारे द्विपदों (मनुष्यों) तथा चतुष्पदों (पशुओं) के लिए कल्याणकारी बनो। हे वास्तोष्पते, हमारे उन्नायक एवं रक्षक बनो; गौ, अश्व आदि से हमारे घर की समृद्धि बढ़ाओ, हे तेजस्वी देव। हम जरारहित होकर तुम्हारी मैत्री में स्थित रहें; जैसे पिता अपने पुत्रों को, वैसे ही तुम हमें प्रेमपूर्वक अपनाओ।

वास्तु शान्ति मन्त्र (वास्तोष्पते) ਪਾਠ ਵਿਧੀ
This mantra is central to the Vastu Shanti ritual, usually performed by a priest as part of a homa (fire offering) before or just after first entering a new home on an auspicious day. The residents sit facing the sacred fire; the Vastoshpati mantras are recited (often with ghee offerings into the fire) to consecrate the four directions and the Vastu Purusha presiding over the plot. Devotees may also chant it themselves three or more times, with a lamp lit, while sprinkling consecrated water in the rooms, praying for peace and prosperity in the household.
