Origin & Story

Shaiva devotional tradition of Kashi (Varanasi) · Traditional (Kashi devotional tradition) · Traditional

Kashi (Varanasi), the eternal city of Lord Shiva on the banks of the Ganga, has its own daily rhythm of worship that begins before dawn. This Suprabhatam belongs to that living tradition: at first light, devotees gather at the ghats to bathe in the Ganga and then to worship Vishwanatha, the presiding Jyotirlinga. The hymn gently awakens, in turn, Kala Bhairava the guardian of the city, Mother Ganga, and Dhundhiraja Ganesha, before the great darshan of the Lord — each invoked with the loving refrain 'a blessed dawn to you'. It captures the devotion with which Kashi greets every new day.

As told in scripture

It is held in Kashi that the city's deities — Bhairava the guardian, the ever-flowing Ganga, and Dhundhiraja Ganesha — grant a good destiny even to the most sinful who take refuge in them, as the third verse declares; and that to begin the day by awakening them with this Suprabhatam draws their protection over the whole day.

Yes — only the script changes; the words and their meaning are the original. The verse-by-verse meaning, benefits and how-to-chant guidance on this page apply exactly the same.
It is a 'suprabhatam' (auspicious-dawn) hymn that awakens the deities of Kashi at sunrise — beginning with Kala Bhairava, the guardian of the city, then Mother Ganga, and Dhundhiraja Ganesha — as a prelude to the worship of Lord Vishwanatha, the Jyotirlinga of Varanasi. Each verse ends with 'tava suprabhātam', 'a blessed dawn to you'.
A suprabhatam is a class of devotional hymn sung at dawn to lovingly 'awaken' a deity for the day, much as one would gently rouse a beloved king or guest. The most famous is the Venkateswara Suprabhatam; this one is dedicated to the deities of Kashi and Lord Vishwanatha.
In Kashi, Kala Bhairava is honoured as the Kotwal (guardian-magistrate) of the city. Tradition holds that one should first seek the leave of Bhairava, the guardian, before approaching Lord Vishwanatha — so the suprabhatam awakens him, and Ganga and Ganesha, first.
It is ideally chanted at dawn or sunrise as the very first prayer of the day, after bathing. Singing it each morning is a way to begin the day immersed in the sacred atmosphere of Kashi and the grace of Lord Vishwanatha.
