Origin & Story

Datta-sampradaya devotional literature; composed in Gujarati by Shri Rang Avadhoot Maharaj of Nareshwar ยท Shri Rang Avadhoot Maharaj (Pandurang Vitthal Valame), 1898โ€“1968 ยท 20th century

Shri Rang Avadhoot Maharaj was a renowned Datta-bhakta who established his ashram at Nareshwar on the banks of the Narmada. Out of his intense love for Lord Dattatreya he composed the Datta Bavani โ€” fifty-two verses in simple, fervent Gujarati that pour out total surrender to Datta as the all-sustaining, compassionate Avadhuta and the very form of the Trimurti. The hymn spread rapidly among devotees and is now recited daily in countless homes and at Datta temples, especially in Gujarat and Maharashtra, as a prayer for refuge, protection and the grace of the Sadguru.

โœฆ As told in scripture

The Datta tradition holds that wherever the Datta Bavani is recited with faith, Lord Datta swiftly removes the devotee's calamities โ€” countless followers of Shri Rang Avadhoot Maharaj relate how recitation during illness, danger or crisis brought sudden relief and protection, true to its promise that Datta is 'the deliverer of all who take refuge in him'.

The Datta Bavani is a fifty-two-verse devotional hymn ('bavani' = 52) to Lord Dattatreya, composed in Gujarati by Shri Rang Avadhoot Maharaj of Nareshwar. It praises Datta as the compassionate Avadhuta and the union of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, and prays for his refuge and grace.
It was composed by the twentieth-century saint Shri Rang Avadhoot Maharaj (Pandurang Vitthal Valame) of Nareshwar in Gujarat, a great devotee of Lord Dattatreya. It has since become one of the most widely sung Datta hymns across Gujarat and Maharashtra.
Devotees recite it for protection, removal of difficulties and fear, and the grace of the Guru. It cultivates complete surrender to Datta and is especially recited during times of distress and on Thursdays and Datta Jayanti.
It is most auspicious on Thursdays, the day of the Guru, and on Datta Jayanti (the full moon of Margashirsha). Many devotees recite it daily as a morning or evening prayer to Lord Dattatreya.
