Ganapati Sahasranama Stotram in Grantha ยท ๐๐๐ฐ๐จ๐๐ฅ
Read in your language / script
Origin & Story
Ganesha Purana, Upasana Khanda, chapter 46 (Ishvara-Ganesha samvada) ยท Traditionally revealed by Maha Ganapati himself; recorded in the Ganesha Purana ยท c. 600-1300 CE (Puranic period)
When Shiva set out to destroy the three cities of the demons, his chariot axle broke โ he had begun the greatest of battles without worshipping Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. Realising the cause, Shiva worshipped Maha Ganapati with full devotion, and the pleased Lord himself taught the thousand names that destroy every obstacle and grant every desire. The hymn that Ganapati revealed sweeps through all of reality: his elephant form and his cosmic body, the alphabet from the vowels to the visarga, the numbers from one to the thirty-three crore gods, the planets, the sciences, the scriptures of every school, and time from the smallest instant to the great dissolution โ declaring that all of it is Ganesha.
โฆ As told in scripture
This sahasranama contains an entire map of Indian knowledge inside a hymn: the names run systematically through the letters of the Sanskrit alphabet, then through the numbers โ two, three, four, up through eighteen Puranas, twenty-seven stars, sixty-four arts, eighty-four lakh species and thirty-three crore gods โ presenting Ganesha as the deity of language and mathematics itself. Its frame story carries a striking teaching: even Shiva, the supreme god, faced obstacles when he skipped the worship of Ganesha โ no one, human or divine, begins well without bowing to the Lord of beginnings.

Meaning:The stotra opens with a frame story from the Ganesha Purana. The sage asks Brahma how the thousand names came to be taught, and Brahma relates that even Shiva, setting out to conquer the three demon cities, was beset by obstacles because he had not first worshipped Ganesha. Shiva then worshipped Mahaganapati with devotion, and the pleased Lord himself spoke this thousand-name hymn that quells every obstacle and grants the fruit of every desire. The viniyoga assigns Ganesha as its seer, Mahaganapati as its deity, 'hum' as its seed-syllable and declares its recitation to be for winning Mahaganapati's grace through the destruction of all obstacles.

Meaning:Before the recitation come the ritual preliminaries: the kara-nyasa installs pairs of the Lord's names upon the thumbs, fingers and palms, and the anga-nyasa places them upon the heart, head, crown-lock, body-armour, three eyes and weapon, sealing the directions with 'bhur bhuvah suvarom'. The dhyana verse then paints the object of meditation: the inconceivable elephant-faced Lord with sharp tusk and three eyes, vast-bellied, the ancient king of all prosperity, red-hued, worshipped by the best of the immortals โ the son of Pashupati, the sovereign of obstacles, to whom I bow.

Meaning:This decade celebrates his play and prowess: with a blow of his hand he churned the ocean's waters, he broke the tooth of Pushan, he delights in play on Uma's lap, he gives liberation and purifies the family line. Crowned, earringed and garlanded with forest flowers, he struck down the fortune of hostile demons and conquered the earth with a step of his foot. He removes evil omens and bad dreams, wears the yellow robe, bears the broken tusk and the moon on his brow, eats the oblations, presides over yoga, has an elephant's ears and the gait of victory. Born from Shambhu's face, born of the limbs of Uma, he is the dispeller of Shiva's anger and the delight of Gauri โ his very body is the yajna, his head is Brahman.

Meaning:Here the whole cosmos is revealed as his body: the universe-egg is his skull, the sky of consciousness his forehead, truth the hair of his head; the opening and closing of his eyes are the birth and dissolution of worlds, and fire, sun and moon are his three eyes. The king of mountains is his single tusk, dharma and adharma his lips, the planets and stars his teeth, Sarasvati his tongue, Indra his nose; rivers are his arms, serpents his fingers, stars his nails; space is his navel, Shri his heart, Meru his spine, the oceans his belly, the earth his hips, the netherworld his shanks โ the three Vedas are his form. He dwells as the Chintamani lord of the jewel-island, in groves of wish-fulfilling trees, enthroned on a gem-lion-seat, his pedestal adored by Nanda and the shakti Jvalini.

Meaning:This decade carries the esoteric names of the Uchchhishta-Ganapati tradition and the alphabet-names beginning with the vowels: his seed is Hum, his power Tunga, his shakti Svaha; he dwells in the ocean of nectar with eyes rolling in rapture, the leader of the uchchhishta ganas, clothed in the directions (digambara). A cascade of negations declares his transcendence: imperishable, of infinite vision, immeasurable, unaging and undying, unstained, unobstructed, unfallen (achyuta), immortal, indestructible syllable, beyond reasoning, unconquerable, needing no support, free of disease and taint, of measureless attainment, non-dual, un-terrible yet with a face like fire. Mouse-bannered fulfiller of hopes, he stands in the middle of the sugarcane ocean loving its sweetness, lovely as the indragopa insect, lustrous as sapphire, dark as the blue-lotus petal, adorned with the moon's disc, dear to Indira, crowned by Ishana and destroyer of calamities.

Meaning:Here the phalashruti โ the fruit of recitation โ begins: 'Thus have the thousand names of Vinayaka been declared. The person who recites them every day in the brahma-muhurta holds in the palm of his hand all happiness of this world and the next': long life, health, lordship, courage, valour, strength and fame, intelligence, wisdom, firmness, radiance, good fortune and beauty, truth, compassion, forgiveness, peace, courtesy and virtue, the goodwill of the world, harmony with all, mastery of the Vedas, learning in assemblies, generosity, depth and brahmic lustre. Meaning:The fruits continue: it undoes hostile witchcraft and crushes the enemy's forces; on the road of battle it alone brings victory. It destroys every fault of barrenness and is the sole protector of the womb. In whatever land this stotra of Ganapati is read daily, there is no famine there, no plagues, no calamities; Lakshmi never abandons the house where this hymn is recited. It heals the whole catalogue of diseases โ consumption, leprosy, diabetes, piles, fistula, cholera, tumours, diseases of the spleen, stones, dysentery, dropsy, cough, asthma, colic, swellings, head-ailments, vomiting, hiccups, scrofula, loss of appetite, and fevers born of vata, pitta, kapha, their pairs and all three together, intermittent and external fevers, chills and burning โ all these, named and unnamed, a single recitation swiftly pacifies. Its siddhi is open to all โ attainable even by women, shudras and the fallen. One who recites it with desires enjoys at will every earthly pleasure, and then, in beautiful sky-going chariots won by his merit, dwells in the abodes of Chandra, Indra, Surya, Upendra, Brahma and Sharva.

Meaning:Moving at will and taking any form, having enjoyed all wished-for pleasures together with his beloved kin, the reciter becomes an attendant of Ganesha โ a gana dear to Ganapati, welcomed with delight by Nandishvara and all the hosts, and caressed by Shiva and Parvati with the affection shown their own son. By a further boon of Ganeshvara he is reborn remembering his past lives, devoted to dharma, and becomes a sovereign of the whole earth. But the desireless one who recites daily with devotion, intent on Vighnesha, attains the highest yoga-siddhi, filled with knowledge and dispassion, and merges into the Vainayaka abode โ unbroken, unobstructed, called supreme bliss, beyond the universe, full, free from all return โ and there rests in everlasting peace. Whoever worships and honours him with these names, with oblations and offerings โ kings come under his sway and enemies become his servants; the rarest fulfilments of mantras are accomplished for him. 'This stotra,' says the Lord, 'is dearer to me even than my own mula-mantra. In the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada, on the chaturthi of my birth, let one worship me with durva grass and these names and make offerings according to rule, with the eight substances and full devotion โ then wealth, grain, lordship, victory and fame shall be his.'

Meaning:The promise concludes: sons, grandsons and every happiness will follow without doubt. This hymn โ recited, read, heard, listened to, expounded, discussed, meditated upon, reflected on or reverenced โ bestows on all beings every lordship of this world and the next. Even one who wanders at his own will, if he holds fast to this hymn of praise, is guarded by the eight crores of ganas born of Shiva. Let one worship the written book of the stotra as the very embodiment of mantra: there supreme Lakshmi takes up her unbroken dwelling. Not by all gifts, all vows, all pilgrimages and all sacrifices together does one find the fruit that comes at once from remembering the thousand names of Ganesha. Whoever recites these thousand names at sunrise, at evening or at midday, at the three junctions or continually, becomes foremost in lordship, a master of speech who spreads his fame on high, destroys poverty, wins the whole world, and long flourishes with sons and grandsons. Even a possessionless man, single-minded, disciplined and steady in posture, who recites for four months intent on the worship of Ganesha, uproots even the poverty that has followed him for seven births and gains great Lakshmi โ such is the command of Parameshvara. Long life free of disease, a spotless family, riches and the end of affliction, ever-shining fame, effortless new beauty, good sons and a virtuous beloved wife โ whatever else there be, all rests in the hand of him who daily recites this stotra of Ganapati. Then begins the garland of twenty-one names: Gananjaya, Ganapati, Heramba, Dharanidhara, Mahaganapati, Buddhipriya, Kshipraprasadana โ

Meaning:โ Amoghasiddhi, Amritamantra, Chintamani, Nidhi, Sumangala, Bija, Ashapuraka, Varada, Kala, Kashyapa, Nandana, Vachasiddha, Dhundhi and Vinayaka. Whoever with devotion offers modakas along with these twenty-one names, seeking my grace โ for him Vighnaraja will truly accomplish the desired aims within the year. Whoever praises me with mind absorbed in me, intent upon my worship โ praised by these thousand names, I am won by him: of this there is no doubt. The hymn ends with its salutation: 'Obeisance, obeisance to you whose feet the best of the gods worship; obeisance, obeisance to the soul of incomparable auspiciousness; obeisance, obeisance to the sole fulfilment of vast compassion; obeisance, obeisance to you of the elephant-calf face. May he whose feet are ringed with tinkling bells, whose graceful acts reveal the boundless Guru, whose temples stream with waves of ichor โ may Ganapati by his very name destroy all evil.' Thus ends the Ganesha-sahasranama-stotra, the forty-sixth chapter of the Upasana-khanda of the Ganesha Purana, the dialogue of Ishvara and Ganesha.

How to Chant Ganapati Sahasranama Stotram
Begin with a bath and a clean seat facing east. Perform the karanyasa and anganyasa as given in the text, meditate on the dhyana verse of the red-hued, elephant-faced Lord, and then recite the thousand names with an unhurried, devoted mind. Offer durva grass, red flowers and modakas if possible. The phalashruti recommends daily recitation at brahma-muhurta; on Ganesha Chaturthi, worship with the names and eight offering substances is prescribed by the text itself. If time is short, the twenty-one names listed at the end (Gananjaya, Ganapati, Heramba...) may be recited with modaka offerings.
