Origin & Story

Traditional Hindi devotional literature (Vishwakarma worship tradition) ยท Traditional (anonymous) ยท Modern devotional period

Vishwakarma is celebrated in the Vedas and Puranas as the divine craftsman 'Tvashtar' and the architect of the cosmos. This forty-verse Hindi chalisa, composed in the popular Chalisa form, gathers his epithets and feats โ€” the fashioning of the gods' weapons, the building of their cities, the making of vehicles and instruments โ€” into a hymn recited by the artisan and labouring communities who hold him as their patron deity, especially on Vishwakarma Puja.

โœฆ As told in scripture

Tradition credits Vishwakarma with building the golden city of Lanka, the city of Dwarka for Krishna, the Pandavas' palace of Maya, and the flying chariots of the gods. Devotees believe that worshipping their tools and machines with this chalisa on Vishwakarma Puja keeps them free of accidents and breakdowns and brings prosperity to their livelihood through the year.

Meaning:The chalisa hails Vishwakarma as the eighth Vasu, son of Prabhasa, who revealed craftsmanship to the world and fashioned all creation. It describes his radiant form with many faces and arms bearing the discus, conch, measuring tools, bow, trident and lotus, and recounts how he forged the weapons of the gods from the sun's brilliance โ€” the discus for Vishnu, the trident for Shiva, the thunderbolt for Indra, the noose for Varuna. He made the pot of nectar, works in iron, wood, copper, stone and gold, and crafted the vehicles that travel by water, land and sky. He is declared inseparable from Shiva in the science of creation, the bestower of prosperity and accomplishment, protector of all craftsmen. Whoever recites this chalisa one hundred and eight times has their calamities destroyed and gains great happiness, with Lord Shiva as witness.

How to Chant Vishwakarma Chalisa

Repetitions108times
Best TimeVishwakarma Jayanti / Vishwakarma Puja (usually 17 September / Kanya Sankranti); also Sundays and the start of new work or installation of tools and machines

Recite after worshipping Lord Vishwakarma along with one's tools, machines, instruments or vehicles. Begin with the opening doha, recite the forty chaupais, and conclude with the closing doha. The hymn itself states that reciting it 108 times destroys calamity and brings great happiness, so a full mala of recitations is recommended on Vishwakarma Puja. Artisans and workers traditionally keep their implements before the deity during the recitation.

Frequently Asked Questions

This page shows the complete Vishwakarma Chalisa written in the Grantha script โ€” the same Sanskrit/Hindi verses, transliterated character-by-character so you can read and chant comfortably. Tap any line (or the โ–ถ button) to hear it recited aloud.
Yes โ€” only the script changes; the words and their meaning are the original. The verse-by-verse meaning, benefits and how-to-chant guidance on this page apply exactly the same.
Vishwakarma is the divine architect and master craftsman of the gods in Hindu tradition. He is described as the maker of the universe, the builder of the gods' palaces and cities (such as Dwarka and Lanka), the forger of their weapons, and the patron deity of all craftsmen, engineers and artisans.
It is recited especially on Vishwakarma Jayanti (Vishwakarma Puja), which usually falls on 17 September (Kanya Sankranti). On this day workers, artisans and businesses worship their tools and machines. It is also chanted at the start of new construction or work.
It credits him with fashioning the discus (Sudarshana) for Vishnu, the trident for Shiva, the thunderbolt (Vajra) for Indra, the noose for Varuna, the pot that held amrita, and celestial vehicles that travel by land, water and sky โ€” all from the brilliance of the sun.
The chalisa itself states that reciting it one hundred and eight (108) times, with Lord Shiva as witness, destroys calamities and brings great happiness, so a full mala of 108 recitations is traditionally recommended.
