Origin & Story

Stavamrita-lahari of Srila Vishwanatha Chakravarti Thakura ยท Srila Vishwanatha Chakravarti Thakura ยท c. 17thโ€“18th century CE

Srila Vishwanatha Chakravarti Thakura, one of the most revered Gaudiya Vaishnava acharyas and commentators, composed the Vrindadevy-ashtakam in glorification of Vrinda Devi โ€” the goddess who eternally directs the pastimes of Radha and Krishna in Vrindavan and who descends to the earth as the sacred Tulasi. The hymn praises her dazzling golden form, the authority over Vrindavan entrusted to her by Sri Radha, and her unique role as the messenger and stage-manager of the Divine Couple's love. Recognising that the rasa dance, residence in the holy dham, and service to Radha-Krishna all flow from her mercy, the poet humbly takes shelter at her lotus feet.

โœฆ As told in scripture

Vaishnava tradition holds that Vrinda Devi personally arranges the meetings of Radha and Krishna, so her mercy is the secret door to Vrindavan's deepest pastimes; devotees who worship Tulasi (her form) and recite this ashtakam are said to be granted residence in the holy land and a place in the eternal service of the Divine Couple.

This page shows the complete Sri Vrinda Devi Ashtakam written in the Grantha script โ€” the same Sanskrit/Hindi verses, transliterated character-by-character so you can read and chant comfortably. Tap any line (or the โ–ถ button) to hear it recited aloud.
Yes โ€” only the script changes; the words and their meaning are the original. The verse-by-verse meaning, benefits and how-to-chant guidance on this page apply exactly the same.
Vrinda Devi is the presiding goddess of Vrindavan and the chief arranger (lila-shakti) of the loving pastimes of Sri Radha and Sri Krishna in the groves of Braj. In this world she appears as the sacred Tulasi plant, which is why Tulasi is so dear to Krishna and worshipped by Vaishnavas.
It was composed by Srila Vishwanatha Chakravarti Thakura (17thโ€“18th century), a great Gaudiya Vaishnava acharya, and is found in his collection Stavamrita-lahari.
The seventh verse states that Vrinda Devi's very form in the human world is Tulasi. Worshipping the Tulasi plant is thus understood as worshipping Vrinda Devi, who bestows residence and service in Vrindavan.
Each verse ends with 'vrinde namas te charanaravindam', meaning 'O Vrinda, I offer my obeisances to your lotus feet.' It expresses humble surrender at the feet of the goddess of Vrindavan.
