Meaning

The Sri Vrindadevy-ashtakam is an eight-verse hymn by Srila Vishwanatha Chakravarti Thakura glorifying Vrinda Devi, the presiding goddess of Vrindavan who arranges the pastimes of Radha and Krishna and who appears in this world as the sacred Tulasi plant. Each verse, ending 'vrinde namas te charanaravindam' ('O Vrinda, I bow to your lotus feet'), praises her beauty, her authority over Vrindavan granted by Sri Radha, and her grace that grants devotees residence and service in the holy land. A concluding phala-shruti promises eternal residence in Vrindavan and loving service to those who recite it.

Origin & Story

Stavamrita-lahari of Srila Vishwanatha Chakravarti Thakura · Srila Vishwanatha Chakravarti Thakura · c. 17th–18th century CE

Srila Vishwanatha Chakravarti Thakura, one of the most revered Gaudiya Vaishnava acharyas and commentators, composed the Vrindadevy-ashtakam in glorification of Vrinda Devi — the goddess who eternally directs the pastimes of Radha and Krishna in Vrindavan and who descends to the earth as the sacred Tulasi. The hymn praises her dazzling golden form, the authority over Vrindavan entrusted to her by Sri Radha, and her unique role as the messenger and stage-manager of the Divine Couple's love. Recognising that the rasa dance, residence in the holy dham, and service to Radha-Krishna all flow from her mercy, the poet humbly takes shelter at her lotus feet.

As told in scripture

Vaishnava tradition holds that Vrinda Devi personally arranges the meetings of Radha and Krishna, so her mercy is the secret door to Vrindavan's deepest pastimes; devotees who worship Tulasi (her form) and recite this ashtakam are said to be granted residence in the holy land and a place in the eternal service of the Divine Couple.
