Nirjala Ekadashi — Date, Vrat & Vishnu Mantras

Nirjala Ekadashi (निर्जला एकादशी) is the strictest and most rewarding of the year's twenty-four Ekadashis — observed without food and even without water (nir-jala, "waterless"), from sunrise until the next morning's parana. Falling in the bright fortnight of Jyeshtha at the height of summer, it is also called Bhima or Bhimseni Ekadashi, and it is said that keeping this single fast grants the merit of all twenty-four Ekadashis. In 2026 it falls on Thursday, 25 June. These are the Vishnu mantras and the complete guide for the vrat.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Nirjala Ekadashi 2026?
Nirjala Ekadashi 2026 falls on Thursday, 25 June 2026 — the Ekadashi (11th day) of the bright fortnight of Jyeshtha. The fast is kept from the Ekadashi sunrise and broken (parana) the next morning, Friday 26 June, during the Dwadashi parana window.
Why is it called Nirjala (and Bhima) Ekadashi?
Nirjala means "without water" — uniquely, this Ekadashi is observed without taking even a drop of water, from sunrise to the next day's parana, which is why it is the hardest of all. It is also called Bhima or Bhimseni Ekadashi: Bhima of the Mahabharata, unable to fast on the other Ekadashis because of his great hunger, was told by Sage Vyasa that observing this one Nirjala Ekadashi with full rigour would earn him the merit of all twenty-four.
What is the parana (fast-breaking) time?
The fast is broken on Dwadashi, the morning after — Friday 26 June 2026 — within the parana window after sunrise and before the Dwadashi tithi ends. Break the fast with water first, then food, after offering to Lord Vishnu. Always confirm the exact local parana timing for your city on the day.
How is the Nirjala Ekadashi vrat observed?
Take a sankalp (vow) at dawn, then keep a complete waterless fast through the day and night. Bathe and worship Lord Vishnu with tulsi, flowers and a lamp, recite the Vishnu mantras and the Ekadashi katha, and stay awake in devotion. Because it falls in peak summer, it is especially meritorious to donate water, earthen pots (matka), hand-fans, fruit, sugar and clothes to the needy.
What are the benefits of Nirjala Ekadashi?
It is believed that observing Nirjala Ekadashi alone grants the combined merit of all twenty-four Ekadashis of the year, washes away sins, and leads the devotee toward moksha (liberation) and the abode of Vishnu. The water and summer-relief given in charity on this day are said to return as immense blessings.
Who should not keep the waterless fast?
The strict nirjala (waterless) fast is not advised for the sick, the elderly, pregnant or nursing women, children, or anyone for whom going without water in summer heat is unsafe. They may instead keep a phalahar (fruit and water) Ekadashi fast and still worship Vishnu — sincere devotion matters more than rigour.
