ಮೂಲ & ಕಥೆ

Rigveda, Mandala 10, Sukta 125 (the Devi Sukta / Vak Sukta / Ambhrini Sukta) · Revealed by the rishika Vak, daughter of sage Ambhrina · Vedic (ancient)

The Devi Suktam is one of the most philosophically profound hymns of the Rigveda. Its seer, Vak Ambhrini, attained the highest realization and uttered this hymn in which the Divine Mother speaks as the one Self animating all gods, all worlds and all life. She declares that she bends Rudra's bow, bestows wisdom on whom she loves, and pervades heaven and earth, breathing forth like the wind to set the cosmos in motion. The hymn became the Vedic cornerstone of Shakta theology and is recited at the heart of the Durga Saptashati liturgy.

ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಿದಂತೆ

Tradition holds that the rishika Vak, by the power of this very realization, became one with the Goddess she praised — and that sincere recitation of the Suktam awakens in the devotee the same recognition that the supreme 'I' speaking through the hymn is none other than the Self within.

It is the hymn Rigveda 10.125, in which the Goddess (as Vak, divine speech) declares herself the supreme power pervading all gods and worlds. Because its seer is Vak, daughter of sage Ambhrina, it is also called the Ambhrini Sukta or Vak Sukta.
This is the Vedic Devi Suktam from the Rigveda (10.125). The Tantrokta Devi Suktam ('Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu Shakti-rupena...') comes from the Devi Mahatmya (Markandeya Purana). Both are recited in Devi worship, but they are different hymns from different sources.
The seer (rishika) is Vak, the daughter of the sage Ambhrina. Uniquely, the Goddess herself speaks throughout the hymn in the first person ('Aham', 'I'), proclaiming her own supremacy and omnipresence.
It is especially recited during Navaratri and before the Durga Saptashati (Chandi Path), as well as in daily Devi worship. As a Vedic mantra it is best chanted in the morning with proper pronunciation.
