Meaning

These are the opening names of the Lalita Trishati — the three hundred names of the Goddess Lalita revealed by Lord Hayagriva to the sage Agastya in the Brahmanda Purana. Uniquely, the Trishati is built upon the fifteen syllables of the sacred Panchadashi mantra, with twenty names beginning from each syllable. It opens with the syllable 'Ka', hailing the Goddess as Kalyani, the auspicious lotus-eyed ocean of compassion who dwells in the Kadamba forest.

Origin & Story

Lalita Trishati (opening names), Brahmanda Purana · Revealed by Lord Hayagriva to Sage Agastya · Ancient (Puranic)

In the Brahmanda Purana, the sage Agastya, after learning the greatness of the Goddess, was taught the secret of her worship by Lord Hayagriva, an incarnation of Vishnu and lord of wisdom. As the crown of this teaching, Hayagriva imparted the Lalita Trishati — three hundred names structured on the fifteen syllables of the Panchadashi mantra — beginning with the names from the syllable 'Ka'.

As told in scripture

It is said that Lord Hayagriva imparted the Trishati to Agastya as a closely guarded secret, declaring that the Goddess herself had ordained these very names; tradition holds that offering each name with kumkuma at the Sri Chakra showers the worshipper with auspiciousness and fulfils worthy desires.

The Lalita Trishati is a hymn of 300 names of the Goddess Lalita Tripura Sundari, found in the Brahmanda Purana, where Lord Hayagriva teaches it to the sage Agastya. 'Trishati' means 'three hundred'.
The Trishati is structured on the fifteen letters of the Panchadashi, the great fifteen-syllabled mantra of Sri Vidya. The first syllable is 'Ka', so the first twenty names all begin with 'Ka', starting with 'Kakara-rupa' — 'She who is the form of the syllable Ka'.
The Sahasranama has 1,000 names with no fixed syllabic pattern, while the Trishati has exactly 300 names — 20 for each of the 15 syllables of the Panchadashi mantra — making it a direct meditation on the mantra itself.
It is an esoteric Sri Vidya text and is traditionally received from a guru. However, devotees may recite it with reverence and devotion; receiving the Panchadashi mantra from a qualified teacher deepens its practice.
