The Lakshmi Chalisa is a forty-verse Hindi hymn to Mahalakshmi, the goddess of wealth and fortune who arose from the churning of the ocean of milk as the beloved of Vishnu. It recalls how, age after age, she accompanies the Lord in each incarnation — as Sita beside Rama — and promises abundance, health and joy to all who worship her with a devoted, contented heart.

അർഥം:O daughter of the ocean, beloved of Vishnu, again and again I bow my head; O giver of prosperity, perfection and every blessing, again and again I bow.

അർഥം:O daughter of the ocean, I remember you; grant me knowledge, intellect and learning.

Tuma samana nahim koi upakari Saba vidhi purabahu asa hamari
അർഥം:There is no benefactor equal to you; in every way fulfil our hopes.
ജൈ ജൈ ജഗത ജനനി ജഗദമ്ബാ । സബകേ തുമഹീ ഹോ സ്വലമ്ബാ ॥
Jai jai jagata janani jagadamba Sabake tumahi ho svalamba
അർഥം:Victory, victory, O Mother of the world, Jagadamba; you are the support of all.
തുമ ഹീ ഹോ ഘട ഘട കേ വാസീ । വിനതീ യഹീ ഹമാരീ ഖാസീ ॥
Tuma hi ho ghata ghata ke vasi Vinati yahi hamari khasi
അർഥം:You dwell within every single heart; this is our heartfelt prayer to you.
ജഗ ജനനീ ജയ സിന്ധു കുമാരീ । ദീനന കീ തുമ ഹോ ഹിതകാരീ ॥
Jaga janani jaya sindhu kumari Dinana ki tuma ho hitakari
അർഥം:O Mother of the world, victory, O daughter of the ocean; you are the benefactor of the lowly.
വിനവൌം നിത്യ തുമഹിം മഹാരാനീ । കൃപാ കരൌ ജഗ ജനനി ഭവാനീ ॥

അർഥം:I pray to you daily, O great queen; show your grace, O Mother of the world, Bhavani.

Kehi vidhi stuti karaum tihari Sudhi lijai aparadha bisari
അർഥം:In what way shall I praise you? Take heed of me and overlook my faults.
കൃപാ ദൃഷ്ടി ചിതവോ മമ ഓരീ । ജഗത ജനനി വിനതീ സുന മോരീ ॥
Kripa drishti chitavo mama ori Jagata janani vinati suna mori
അർഥം:Cast your gracious glance upon me; O Mother of the world, hear my prayer.
ജ്ഞാന ബുദ്ധി ജയ സുഖ കീ ദാതാ । സംകട ഹരോ ഹമാരീ മാതാ ॥
Jnana buddhi jaya sukha ki data Samkata haro hamari mata
അർഥം:O giver of knowledge, intellect, victory and joy; remove our distress, O Mother.
ക്ഷീര സിംധു ജബ വിഷ്ണു മഥായോ । ചൌദഹ രത്ന സിംധു മേം പായോ ॥

അർഥം:When Vishnu churned the ocean of milk, fourteen jewels were found in the sea.
ചൌദഹ രത്ന മേം തുമ സുഖരാസീ । സേവാ കിയോ പ്രഭുഹിം ബനി ദാസീ ॥
Chaudaha ratna mem tuma sukharasi Seva kiyo prabhuhim bani dasi
അർഥം:Among the fourteen jewels you were the very treasure of joy; you served the Lord, becoming his consort.
ജബ ജബ ജന്മ ജഹാം പ്രഭു ലീന്ഹാ । രൂപ ബദല തഹം സേവാ കീന്ഹാ ॥
Jaba jaba janma jaham prabhu linha Rupa badala taham seva kinha
അർഥം:Wherever and whenever the Lord took birth, changing your form, you served him there.
സ്വയം വിഷ്ണു ജബ നര തനു ധാരാ । ലീന്ഹേഉ അവധപുരീ അവതാരാ ॥
Svayam vishnu jaba nara tanu dhara Linheu avadhapuri avatara
അർഥം:When Vishnu himself took a human body, he incarnated at Avadhpuri (as Rama).
തബ തുമ പ്രകട ജനകപുര മാഹീം । സേവാ കിയോ ഹൃദയ പുലകാഹീം ॥
Taba tuma prakata janakapura mahim Seva kiyo hridaya pulakahim
അർഥം:Then you appeared in Janakpur (as Sita) and served him with a heart full of joy.
അപനായോ തോഹി അന്തര്യാമീ । വിശ്വ വിദിത ത്രിഭുവന കീ സ്വാമീ ॥
Apanayo tohi antaryami Vishva vidita tribhuvana ki svami
അർഥം:The inner-knower made you his own; you are renowned through the world as the mistress of the three realms.
തുമ സബ പ്രബല ശക്തി നഹിം ആനീ । കഹം തക മഹിമാ കഹൌം ബഖാനീ ॥
Tuma saba prabala shakti nahim ani Kahan taka mahima kahaum bakhani
അർഥം:None can match your mighty power; how far can I tell and describe your glory?
മന ക്രമ വചന കരൈ സേവകാഈ । മന-ഇച്ഛിത വാംഛിത ഫല പാഈ ॥
Mana krama vachana karai sevakai Mana-ichchhita vamchhita phala pai
അർഥം:Whoever serves you in thought, deed and word obtains the desired and longed-for fruit.
തജി ഛല കപട ഔര ചതുരാഈ । പൂജഹിം വിവിധ ഭാംതി മന ലാഈ ॥
Taji chhala kapata aura chaturai Pujahim vividha bhanti mana lai
അർഥം:Forsaking deceit, cunning and trickery, they worship you in many ways with a devoted heart.
ഔര ഹാല മൈം കഹൌം ബുഝാഈ । ജോ യഹ പാഠ കരേ മന ലാഈ ॥
Aura hala maim kahaum bujhai Jo yaha patha kare mana lai
അർഥം:And I tell you another truth: whoever recites this with a devoted mind —
താകോ കോഈ കഷ്ട ന ഹോഈ । മന ഇച്ഛിത ഫല പാവൈ ഫല സോഈ ॥
Tako koi kashta na hoi Mana ichchhita phala pavai phala soi
അർഥം:— no suffering befalls them; they obtain the very fruit their heart desires.
ത്രാഹി-ത്രാഹി ജയ ദുഃഖ നിവാരിണീ । ത്രിവിധ താപ ഭവ ബംധന ഹാരിണി ॥
Trahi-trahi jaya duhkha nivarini Trividha tapa bhava bamdhana harini
അർഥം:'Save us, save us!' — victory, O remover of sorrow, destroyer of the three-fold afflictions and the bonds of existence.
ജോ യഹ ചാലീസാ പഢ़േ ഔര പഢ़ാവേ । ഇസേ ധ്യാന ലഗാകര സുനേ സുനാവൈ ॥
Jo yaha chalisa padha़e aura padha़ave Ise dhyana lagakara sune sunavai
അർഥം:Whoever reads this Chalisa and has it read, and listens and recites it with meditative attention —
താകോ കോഈ ന രോഗ സതാവൈ । പുത്ര ആദി ധന സമ്പത്തി പാവൈ ॥
Tako koi na roga satavai Putra adi dhana sampatti pavai
അർഥം:— no disease torments them; they obtain children, wealth and prosperity.
പുത്ര ഹീന ഔര സമ്പത്തി ഹീനാ । അന്ധാ ബധിര കോഢ़ീ അതി ദീനാ ॥
Putra hina aura sampatti hina Andha badhira kodha़i ati dina
അർഥം:The one without a son and without wealth, the blind, the deaf, the leper, the utterly wretched —
വിപ്ര ബോലായ കൈ പാഠ കരാവൈ । ശംകാ ദില മേം കഭീ ന ലാവൈ ॥
Vipra bolaya kai patha karavai Shamka dila mem kabhi na lavai
അർഥം:— let them call a brahmin and have it recited, never harbouring doubt in the heart.
പാഠ കരാവൈ ദിന ചാലീസാ । താ പര കൃപാ കരൈം ഗൌരീസാ ॥
Patha karavai dina chalisa Ta para kripa karaim gaurisa
അർഥം:Have the Chalisa recited for forty days, and Gaurisha (Shiva) and the Mother will show their grace.
സുഖ സമ്പത്തി ബഹുത സീ പാവൈ । കമീ നഹീം കാഹൂ കീ ആവൈ ॥
Sukha sampatti bahuta si pavai Kami nahim kahu ki avai
അർഥം:They obtain abundant happiness and wealth; no lack ever comes to them.
ബാരഹ മാസ കരൈ ജോ പൂജാ । തേഹി സമ ധന്യ ഔര നഹിം ദൂജാ ॥
Baraha masa karai jo puja Tehi sama dhanya aura nahim duja
അർഥം:Whoever performs the worship for twelve months — none is more blessed than they.
പ്രതിദിന പാഠ കരൈ മന മാഹീം । ഉന സമ കോഈ ജഗ മേം നാഹിം ॥
Pratidina patha karai mana mahim Una sama koi jaga mem nahim
അർഥം:Whoever recites it daily within the heart — none in the world is their equal.
ബഹു വിധി ക്യാ മൈം കരൌം ബഡ़ാഈ । ലേയ പരീക്ഷാ ധ്യാന ലഗാഈ ॥
Bahu vidhi kya maim karaum bada़ai Leya pariksha dhyana lagai
അർഥം:In how many ways shall I sing your praise? Put it to the test, fixing your mind in meditation.
കരി വിശ്വാസ കരൈം വ്രത നേമാ । ഹോയ സിദ്ധ ഉപജൈ ഉര പ്രേമാ ॥
Kari vishvasa karaim vrata nema Hoya siddha upajai ura prema
അർഥം:Whoever keeps the vow with faith and discipline attains fulfilment, and love springs up in the heart.
ജയ ജയ ജയ ലക്ഷ്മീ മഹാരാനീ । സബ മേം വ്യാപിത ജോ ഗുണ ഖാനീ ॥
Jaya jaya jaya lakshmi maharani Saba mem vyapita jo guna khani
അർഥം:Victory, victory, victory, O Queen Lakshmi, the mine of all virtues who pervades everything.
തുമ്ഹരോ തേജ പ്രബല ജഗ മാഹീം । തുമ സമ കോഉ ദയാല കഹൂം നാഹീം ॥
Tumharo teja prabala jaga mahim Tuma sama kou dayala kahun nahim
അർഥം:Your splendour is mighty in the world; nowhere is anyone as compassionate as you.
മോഹി അനാഥ കീ സുധി അബ ലീജൈ । സംകട കാടി ഭക്തി മോഹി ദീജേ ॥
Mohi anatha ki sudhi aba lijai Samkata kati bhakti mohi dije
അർഥം:Take heed now of me, the orphan; cut away my distress and grant me devotion.
ഭൂല ചൂക കരീ ക്ഷമാ ഹമാരീ । ദര്ശന ദീജൈ ദശാ നിഹാരീ ॥
Bhula chuka kari kshama hamari Darshana dijai dasha nihari
അർഥം:Forgive my errors and mistakes; grant me your darshan, beholding my condition.
ബിന ദരശന വ്യാകുല അധികാരീ । തുമഹിം അക്ഷത ദുഃഖ സഹതേ ഭാരീ ॥
Bina darashana vyakula adhikari Tumahim akshata duhkha sahate bhari
അർഥം:Without your vision the devotee is distraught; in your absence I bear grievous sorrow.
നഹിം മോഹിം ജ്ഞാന ബുദ്ധി ഹൈ തന മേം । സബ ജാനത ഹോ അപനേ മന മേം ॥
Nahim mohim jnana buddhi hai tana mem Saba janata ho apane mana mem
അർഥം:I have no knowledge or intellect within me; you know everything in your own mind.
രൂപ ചതുര്ഭുജ കരകേ ധാരണ । കഷ്ട മോര അബ കരഹു നിവാരണ ॥
Rupa chaturbhuja karake dharana Kashta mora aba karahu nivarana
അർഥം:Bearing your four-armed form, now remove my every suffering.
കഹി പ്രകാര മൈം കരൌം ബഡ़ാഈ । ജ്ഞാന ബുദ്ധി മോഹിം നഹിം അധികാഈ ॥
Kahi prakara maim karaum bada़ai Jnana buddhi mohim nahim adhikai
അർഥം:In what way shall I sing your greatness? I have no great knowledge or wit.
രാമദാസ അബ കഹൈ പുകാരീ । കരോ ദൂര തുമ വിപതി ഹമാരീ ॥
Ramadasa aba kahai pukari Karo dura tuma vipati hamari
അർഥം:Ramdas now calls out and prays: drive far away our every calamity, O Mother.
ത്രാഹി ത്രാഹി ദുഃഖ ഹാരിണീ ഹരോ ബേഗി സബ ത്രാസ । ജയതി ജയതി ജയ ലക്ഷ്മീ കരോ ശത്രുന കാ നാശ ॥

Lakshmi Chalisa പാരായണ വിധി
On Friday or at Diwali, after bathing, sit before an image of Goddess Lakshmi. Light a ghee lamp, offer red flowers, kumkum, rice and sweets, and recite the opening doha and the forty chaupais with devotion. The Chalisa recommends recitation for forty days, or worship through the year, for her full grace. Conclude with the Lakshmi aarti.
