The Lakshmi Chalisa is a forty-verse Hindi hymn to Mahalakshmi, the goddess of wealth and fortune who arose from the churning of the ocean of milk as the beloved of Vishnu. It recalls how, age after age, she accompanies the Lord in each incarnation — as Sita beside Rama — and promises abundance, health and joy to all who worship her with a devoted, contented heart.

The Chalisa itself records the promise that the sonless, the poor, even the blind, deaf and afflicted who have it recited with faith for forty days find their distress removed and prosperity restored. Generations of households across India light the Friday and Diwali lamp and recite these verses, trusting Lakshmi's age-old assurance: worship her, and no lack will ever come.

ಅರ್ಥ:O Mother Lakshmi, show your grace and dwell within my heart; fulfil my heart's desires and complete my every hope.
ಯಹೀ ಮೋರ ಅರದಾಸ, ಹಾಥ ಜೋಡ಼ ವಿನತೀ ಕರೋಂ। ಸಬ ವಿಧಿ ಕರಹು ಸುವಾಸ, ಜಯ ಜನನಿ ಜಗದಂಬಿಕಾ॥

ಅರ್ಥ:This is my one prayer, offered with folded hands: in every way bring auspiciousness, O victorious Mother of the world, Jagadambika.
ಸಿಂಧು ಸುತಾ ವಿಷ್ಣುಪ್ರಿಯೇ ನತ ಶಿರ ಬಾರಂಬಾರ । ಋದ್ಧಿ ಸಿದ್ಧಿ ಮಂಗಲಪ್ರದೇ ನತ ಶಿರ ಬಾರಂಬಾರ ॥

ಅರ್ಥ:O daughter of the ocean, beloved of Vishnu, again and again I bow my head; O giver of prosperity, perfection and every blessing, again and again I bow.
ಸಿನ್ಧು ಸುತಾ ಮೈಂ ಸುಮಿರೌಂ ತೋಹೀ । ಜ್ಞಾನ ಬುದ್ಧಿ ವಿದ್ಯಾ ದೋ ಮೋಹಿ ॥
Sindhu suta maim sumiraum tohi Jnana buddhi vidya do mohi
ಅರ್ಥ:O daughter of the ocean, I remember you; grant me knowledge, intellect and learning.
ತುಮ ಸಮಾನ ನಹಿಂ ಕೋಈ ಉಪಕಾರೀ । ಸಬ ವಿಧಿ ಪುರಬಹು ಆಸ ಹಮಾರೀ ॥
Tuma samana nahim koi upakari Saba vidhi purabahu asa hamari
ಅರ್ಥ:There is no benefactor equal to you; in every way fulfil our hopes.
ಜೈ ಜೈ ಜಗತ ಜನನಿ ಜಗದಮ್ಬಾ । ಸಬಕೇ ತುಮಹೀ ಹೋ ಸ್ವಲಮ್ಬಾ ॥
Jai jai jagata janani jagadamba Sabake tumahi ho svalamba
ಅರ್ಥ:Victory, victory, O Mother of the world, Jagadamba; you are the support of all.
ತುಮ ಹೀ ಹೋ ಘಟ ಘಟ ಕೇ ವಾಸೀ । ವಿನತೀ ಯಹೀ ಹಮಾರೀ ಖಾಸೀ ॥
Tuma hi ho ghata ghata ke vasi Vinati yahi hamari khasi
ಅರ್ಥ:You dwell within every single heart; this is our heartfelt prayer to you.
ಜಗ ಜನನೀ ಜಯ ಸಿನ್ಧು ಕುಮಾರೀ । ದೀನನ ಕೀ ತುಮ ಹೋ ಹಿತಕಾರೀ ॥
Jaga janani jaya sindhu kumari Dinana ki tuma ho hitakari
ಅರ್ಥ:O Mother of the world, victory, O daughter of the ocean; you are the benefactor of the lowly.
ವಿನವೌಂ ನಿತ್ಯ ತುಮಹಿಂ ಮಹಾರಾನೀ । ಕೃಪಾ ಕರೌ ಜಗ ಜನನಿ ಭವಾನೀ ॥
Vinavaum nitya tumahim maharani Kripa karau jaga janani bhavani
ಅರ್ಥ:I pray to you daily, O great queen; show your grace, O Mother of the world, Bhavani.
ಕೇಹಿ ವಿಧಿ ಸ್ತುತಿ ಕರೌಂ ತಿಹಾರೀ । ಸುಧಿ ಲೀಜೈ ಅಪರಾಧ ಬಿಸಾರೀ ॥
Kehi vidhi stuti karaum tihari Sudhi lijai aparadha bisari
ಅರ್ಥ:In what way shall I praise you? Take heed of me and overlook my faults.
ಕೃಪಾ ದೃಷ್ಟಿ ಚಿತವೋ ಮಮ ಓರೀ । ಜಗತ ಜನನಿ ವಿನತೀ ಸುನ ಮೋರೀ ॥
Kripa drishti chitavo mama ori Jagata janani vinati suna mori
ಅರ್ಥ:Cast your gracious glance upon me; O Mother of the world, hear my prayer.
ಜ್ಞಾನ ಬುದ್ಧಿ ಜಯ ಸುಖ ಕೀ ದಾತಾ । ಸಂಕಟ ಹರೋ ಹಮಾರೀ ಮಾತಾ ॥
Jnana buddhi jaya sukha ki data Samkata haro hamari mata
ಅರ್ಥ:O giver of knowledge, intellect, victory and joy; remove our distress, O Mother.
ಕ್ಷೀರ ಸಿಂಧು ಜಬ ವಿಷ್ಣು ಮಥಾಯೋ । ಚೌದಹ ರತ್ನ ಸಿಂಧು ಮೇಂ ಪಾಯೋ ॥
Kshira simdhu jaba vishnu mathayo Chaudaha ratna simdhu mem payo
ಅರ್ಥ:When Vishnu churned the ocean of milk, fourteen jewels were found in the sea.
ಚೌದಹ ರತ್ನ ಮೇಂ ತುಮ ಸುಖರಾಸೀ । ಸೇವಾ ಕಿಯೋ ಪ್ರಭುಹಿಂ ಬನಿ ದಾಸೀ ॥
Chaudaha ratna mem tuma sukharasi Seva kiyo prabhuhim bani dasi
ಅರ್ಥ:Among the fourteen jewels you were the very treasure of joy; you served the Lord, becoming his consort.
ಜಬ ಜಬ ಜನ್ಮ ಜಹಾಂ ಪ್ರಭು ಲೀನ್ಹಾ । ರೂಪ ಬದಲ ತಹಂ ಸೇವಾ ಕೀನ್ಹಾ ॥
Jaba jaba janma jaham prabhu linha Rupa badala taham seva kinha
ಅರ್ಥ:Wherever and whenever the Lord took birth, changing your form, you served him there.
ಸ್ವಯಂ ವಿಷ್ಣು ಜಬ ನರ ತನು ಧಾರಾ । ಲೀನ್ಹೇಉ ಅವಧಪುರೀ ಅವತಾರಾ ॥
Svayam vishnu jaba nara tanu dhara Linheu avadhapuri avatara
ಅರ್ಥ:When Vishnu himself took a human body, he incarnated at Avadhpuri (as Rama).
ತಬ ತುಮ ಪ್ರಕಟ ಜನಕಪುರ ಮಾಹೀಂ । ಸೇವಾ ಕಿಯೋ ಹೃದಯ ಪುಲಕಾಹೀಂ ॥
Taba tuma prakata janakapura mahim Seva kiyo hridaya pulakahim
ಅರ್ಥ:Then you appeared in Janakpur (as Sita) and served him with a heart full of joy.
ಅಪನಾಯೋ ತೋಹಿ ಅನ್ತರ್ಯಾಮೀ । ವಿಶ್ವ ವಿದಿತ ತ್ರಿಭುವನ ಕೀ ಸ್ವಾಮೀ ॥
Apanayo tohi antaryami Vishva vidita tribhuvana ki svami
ಅರ್ಥ:The inner-knower made you his own; you are renowned through the world as the mistress of the three realms.
ತುಮ ಸಬ ಪ್ರಬಲ ಶಕ್ತಿ ನಹಿಂ ಆನೀ । ಕಹಂ ತಕ ಮಹಿಮಾ ಕಹೌಂ ಬಖಾನೀ ॥
Tuma saba prabala shakti nahim ani Kahan taka mahima kahaum bakhani
ಅರ್ಥ:None can match your mighty power; how far can I tell and describe your glory?
ಮನ ಕ್ರಮ ವಚನ ಕರೈ ಸೇವಕಾಈ । ಮನ-ಇಚ್ಛಿತ ವಾಂಛಿತ ಫಲ ಪಾಈ ॥
Mana krama vachana karai sevakai Mana-ichchhita vamchhita phala pai
ಅರ್ಥ:Whoever serves you in thought, deed and word obtains the desired and longed-for fruit.
ತಜಿ ಛಲ ಕಪಟ ಔರ ಚತುರಾಈ । ಪೂಜಹಿಂ ವಿವಿಧ ಭಾಂತಿ ಮನ ಲಾಈ ॥
Taji chhala kapata aura chaturai Pujahim vividha bhanti mana lai
ಅರ್ಥ:Forsaking deceit, cunning and trickery, they worship you in many ways with a devoted heart.
ಔರ ಹಾಲ ಮೈಂ ಕಹೌಂ ಬುಝಾಈ । ಜೋ ಯಹ ಪಾಠ ಕರೇ ಮನ ಲಾಈ ॥
Aura hala maim kahaum bujhai Jo yaha patha kare mana lai
ಅರ್ಥ:And I tell you another truth: whoever recites this with a devoted mind —
ತಾಕೋ ಕೋಈ ಕಷ್ಟ ನ ಹೋಈ । ಮನ ಇಚ್ಛಿತ ಫಲ ಪಾವೈ ಫಲ ಸೋಈ ॥
Tako koi kashta na hoi Mana ichchhita phala pavai phala soi
ಅರ್ಥ:— no suffering befalls them; they obtain the very fruit their heart desires.
ತ್ರಾಹಿ-ತ್ರಾಹಿ ಜಯ ದುಃಖ ನಿವಾರಿಣೀ । ತ್ರಿವಿಧ ತಾಪ ಭವ ಬಂಧನ ಹಾರಿಣಿ ॥
Trahi-trahi jaya duhkha nivarini Trividha tapa bhava bamdhana harini
ಅರ್ಥ:'Save us, save us!' — victory, O remover of sorrow, destroyer of the three-fold afflictions and the bonds of existence.
ಜೋ ಯಹ ಚಾಲೀಸಾ ಪಢ़ೇ ಔರ ಪಢ़ಾವೇ । ಇಸೇ ಧ್ಯಾನ ಲಗಾಕರ ಸುನೇ ಸುನಾವೈ ॥
Jo yaha chalisa padha़e aura padha़ave Ise dhyana lagakara sune sunavai
ಅರ್ಥ:Whoever reads this Chalisa and has it read, and listens and recites it with meditative attention —
ತಾಕೋ ಕೋಈ ನ ರೋಗ ಸತಾವೈ । ಪುತ್ರ ಆದಿ ಧನ ಸಮ್ಪತ್ತಿ ಪಾವೈ ॥
Tako koi na roga satavai Putra adi dhana sampatti pavai
ಅರ್ಥ:— no disease torments them; they obtain children, wealth and prosperity.
ಪುತ್ರ ಹೀನ ಔರ ಸಮ್ಪತ್ತಿ ಹೀನಾ । ಅನ್ಧಾ ಬಧಿರ ಕೋಢ़ೀ ಅತಿ ದೀನಾ ॥
Putra hina aura sampatti hina Andha badhira kodha़i ati dina
ಅರ್ಥ:The one without a son and without wealth, the blind, the deaf, the leper, the utterly wretched —
ವಿಪ್ರ ಬೋಲಾಯ ಕೈ ಪಾಠ ಕರಾವೈ । ಶಂಕಾ ದಿಲ ಮೇಂ ಕಭೀ ನ ಲಾವೈ ॥
Vipra bolaya kai patha karavai Shamka dila mem kabhi na lavai
ಅರ್ಥ:— let them call a brahmin and have it recited, never harbouring doubt in the heart.
ಪಾಠ ಕರಾವೈ ದಿನ ಚಾಲೀಸಾ । ತಾ ಪರ ಕೃಪಾ ಕರೈಂ ಗೌರೀಸಾ ॥
Patha karavai dina chalisa Ta para kripa karaim gaurisa
ಅರ್ಥ:Have the Chalisa recited for forty days, and Gaurisha (Shiva) and the Mother will show their grace.
ಸುಖ ಸಮ್ಪತ್ತಿ ಬಹುತ ಸೀ ಪಾವೈ । ಕಮೀ ನಹೀಂ ಕಾಹೂ ಕೀ ಆವೈ ॥
Sukha sampatti bahuta si pavai Kami nahim kahu ki avai
ಅರ್ಥ:They obtain abundant happiness and wealth; no lack ever comes to them.
ಬಾರಹ ಮಾಸ ಕರೈ ಜೋ ಪೂಜಾ । ತೇಹಿ ಸಮ ಧನ್ಯ ಔರ ನಹಿಂ ದೂಜಾ ॥
Baraha masa karai jo puja Tehi sama dhanya aura nahim duja
ಅರ್ಥ:Whoever performs the worship for twelve months — none is more blessed than they.
ಪ್ರತಿದಿನ ಪಾಠ ಕರೈ ಮನ ಮಾಹೀಂ । ಉನ ಸಮ ಕೋಈ ಜಗ ಮೇಂ ನಾಹಿಂ ॥
Pratidina patha karai mana mahim Una sama koi jaga mem nahim
ಅರ್ಥ:Whoever recites it daily within the heart — none in the world is their equal.
ಬಹು ವಿಧಿ ಕ್ಯಾ ಮೈಂ ಕರೌಂ ಬಡ़ಾಈ । ಲೇಯ ಪರೀಕ್ಷಾ ಧ್ಯಾನ ಲಗಾಈ ॥
Bahu vidhi kya maim karaum bada़ai Leya pariksha dhyana lagai
ಅರ್ಥ:In how many ways shall I sing your praise? Put it to the test, fixing your mind in meditation.
ಕರಿ ವಿಶ್ವಾಸ ಕರೈಂ ವ್ರತ ನೇಮಾ । ಹೋಯ ಸಿದ್ಧ ಉಪಜೈ ಉರ ಪ್ರೇಮಾ ॥
Kari vishvasa karaim vrata nema Hoya siddha upajai ura prema
ಅರ್ಥ:Whoever keeps the vow with faith and discipline attains fulfilment, and love springs up in the heart.
ಜಯ ಜಯ ಜಯ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀ ಮಹಾರಾನೀ । ಸಬ ಮೇಂ ವ್ಯಾಪಿತ ಜೋ ಗುಣ ಖಾನೀ ॥
Jaya jaya jaya lakshmi maharani Saba mem vyapita jo guna khani
ಅರ್ಥ:Victory, victory, victory, O Queen Lakshmi, the mine of all virtues who pervades everything.
ತುಮ್ಹರೋ ತೇಜ ಪ್ರಬಲ ಜಗ ಮಾಹೀಂ । ತುಮ ಸಮ ಕೋಉ ದಯಾಲ ಕಹೂಂ ನಾಹೀಂ ॥
Tumharo teja prabala jaga mahim Tuma sama kou dayala kahun nahim
ಅರ್ಥ:Your splendour is mighty in the world; nowhere is anyone as compassionate as you.
ಮೋಹಿ ಅನಾಥ ಕೀ ಸುಧಿ ಅಬ ಲೀಜೈ । ಸಂಕಟ ಕಾಟಿ ಭಕ್ತಿ ಮೋಹಿ ದೀಜೇ ॥
Mohi anatha ki sudhi aba lijai Samkata kati bhakti mohi dije
ಅರ್ಥ:Take heed now of me, the orphan; cut away my distress and grant me devotion.
ಭೂಲ ಚೂಕ ಕರೀ ಕ್ಷಮಾ ಹಮಾರೀ । ದರ್ಶನ ದೀಜೈ ದಶಾ ನಿಹಾರೀ ॥
Bhula chuka kari kshama hamari Darshana dijai dasha nihari
ಅರ್ಥ:Forgive my errors and mistakes; grant me your darshan, beholding my condition.
ಬಿನ ದರಶನ ವ್ಯಾಕುಲ ಅಧಿಕಾರೀ । ತುಮಹಿಂ ಅಕ್ಷತ ದುಃಖ ಸಹತೇ ಭಾರೀ ॥
Bina darashana vyakula adhikari Tumahim akshata duhkha sahate bhari
ಅರ್ಥ:Without your vision the devotee is distraught; in your absence I bear grievous sorrow.
ನಹಿಂ ಮೋಹಿಂ ಜ್ಞಾನ ಬುದ್ಧಿ ಹೈ ತನ ಮೇಂ । ಸಬ ಜಾನತ ಹೋ ಅಪನೇ ಮನ ಮೇಂ ॥
Nahim mohim jnana buddhi hai tana mem Saba janata ho apane mana mem
ಅರ್ಥ:I have no knowledge or intellect within me; you know everything in your own mind.
ರೂಪ ಚತುರ್ಭುಜ ಕರಕೇ ಧಾರಣ । ಕಷ್ಟ ಮೋರ ಅಬ ಕರಹು ನಿವಾರಣ ॥
Rupa chaturbhuja karake dharana Kashta mora aba karahu nivarana
ಅರ್ಥ:Bearing your four-armed form, now remove my every suffering.
ಕಹಿ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಮೈಂ ಕರೌಂ ಬಡ़ಾಈ । ಜ್ಞಾನ ಬುದ್ಧಿ ಮೋಹಿಂ ನಹಿಂ ಅಧಿಕಾಈ ॥
Kahi prakara maim karaum bada़ai Jnana buddhi mohim nahim adhikai
ಅರ್ಥ:In what way shall I sing your greatness? I have no great knowledge or wit.
ರಾಮದಾಸ ಅಬ ಕಹೈ ಪುಕಾರೀ । ಕರೋ ದೂರ ತುಮ ವಿಪತಿ ಹಮಾರೀ ॥
Ramadasa aba kahai pukari Karo dura tuma vipati hamari
ಅರ್ಥ:Ramdas now calls out and prays: drive far away our every calamity, O Mother.
ತ್ರಾಹಿ ತ್ರಾಹಿ ದುಃಖ ಹಾರಿಣೀ ಹರೋ ಬೇಗಿ ಸಬ ತ್ರಾಸ । ಜಯತಿ ಜಯತಿ ಜಯ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀ ಕರೋ ಶತ್ರುನ ಕಾ ನಾಶ ॥
Trahi trahi duhkha harini haro begi saba trasa Jayati jayati jaya lakshmi karo shatruna ka nasha
ಅರ್ಥ:Save us, save us, O remover of sorrow! Swiftly remove all our fear; victory, victory, O Lakshmi, destroy our foes.
ರಾಮದಾಸ ಧರಿ ಧ್ಯಾನ ನಿತ ವಿನಯ ಕರತ ಕರ ಜೋರ । ಮಾತು ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀ ದಾಸ ಪರ ಕರಹು ದಯಾ ಕೀ ಕೋರ ॥

ಅರ್ಥ:Ramdas ever meditates and prays with folded hands: O Mother Lakshmi, show but a measure of grace upon your servant.

Lakshmi Chalisa ಪಾರಾಯಣ ವಿಧಿ
On Friday or at Diwali, after bathing, sit before an image of Goddess Lakshmi. Light a ghee lamp, offer red flowers, kumkum, rice and sweets, and recite the opening doha and the forty chaupais with devotion. The Chalisa recommends recitation for forty days, or worship through the year, for her full grace. Conclude with the Lakshmi aarti.
