The Lakshmi Chalisa is a forty-verse Hindi hymn to Mahalakshmi, the goddess of wealth and fortune who arose from the churning of the ocean of milk as the beloved of Vishnu. It recalls how, age after age, she accompanies the Lord in each incarnation — as Sita beside Rama — and promises abundance, health and joy to all who worship her with a devoted, contented heart.

ਅਰਥ:O Mother Lakshmi, show your grace and dwell within my heart; fulfil my heart's desires and complete my every hope.

ਅਰਥ:This is my one prayer, offered with folded hands: in every way bring auspiciousness, O victorious Mother of the world, Jagadambika.

ਅਰਥ:O daughter of the ocean, beloved of Vishnu, again and again I bow my head; O giver of prosperity, perfection and every blessing, again and again I bow.

ਅਰਥ:O daughter of the ocean, I remember you; grant me knowledge, intellect and learning.

Tuma samana nahim koi upakari Saba vidhi purabahu asa hamari
ਅਰਥ:There is no benefactor equal to you; in every way fulfil our hopes.
ਜੈ ਜੈ ਜਗਤ ਜਨਨਿ ਜਗਦਮ੍ਬਾ । ਸਬਕੇ ਤੁਮਹੀ ਹੋ ਸ੍ਵਲਮ੍ਬਾ ॥

ਅਰਥ:Victory, victory, O Mother of the world, Jagadamba; you are the support of all.
ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਹੋ ਘਟ ਘਟ ਕੇ ਵਾਸੀ । ਵਿਨਤੀ ਯਹੀ ਹਮਾਰੀ ਖਾਸੀ ॥

ਅਰਥ:O Mother of the world, victory, O daughter of the ocean; you are the benefactor of the lowly.
ਵਿਨਵੌਂ ਨਿਤ੍ਯ ਤੁਮਹਿਂ ਮਹਾਰਾਨੀ । ਕृਪਾ ਕਰੌ ਜਗ ਜਨਨਿ ਭਵਾਨੀ ॥
Vinavaum nitya tumahim maharani Kripa karau jaga janani bhavani
ਅਰਥ:I pray to you daily, O great queen; show your grace, O Mother of the world, Bhavani.
ਕੇਹਿ ਵਿਧਿ ਸ੍ਤੁਤਿ ਕਰੌਂ ਤਿਹਾਰੀ । ਸੁਧਿ ਲੀਜੈ ਅਪਰਾਧ ਬਿਸਾਰੀ ॥
Kehi vidhi stuti karaum tihari Sudhi lijai aparadha bisari
ਅਰਥ:In what way shall I praise you? Take heed of me and overlook my faults.
ਕृਪਾ ਦृष੍ਟਿ ਚਿਤਵੋ ਮਮ ਓਰੀ । ਜਗਤ ਜਨਨਿ ਵਿਨਤੀ ਸੁਨ ਮੋਰੀ ॥

ਜ੍ਞਾਨ ਬੁਦ੍ਧਿ ਜਯ ਸੁਖ ਕੀ ਦਾਤਾ । ਸਂਕਟ ਹਰੋ ਹਮਾਰੀ ਮਾਤਾ ॥
Jnana buddhi jaya sukha ki data Samkata haro hamari mata
ਅਰਥ:O giver of knowledge, intellect, victory and joy; remove our distress, O Mother.
ਕ੍षੀਰ ਸਿਂਧੁ ਜਬ ਵਿष੍ਣੁ ਮਥਾਯੋ । ਚੌਦਹ ਰਤ੍ਨ ਸਿਂਧੁ ਮੇਂ ਪਾਯੋ ॥

ਅਰਥ:When Vishnu churned the ocean of milk, fourteen jewels were found in the sea.
ਚੌਦਹ ਰਤ੍ਨ ਮੇਂ ਤੁਮ ਸੁਖਰਾਸੀ । ਸੇਵਾ ਕਿਯੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁਹਿਂ ਬਨਿ ਦਾਸੀ ॥
Chaudaha ratna mem tuma sukharasi Seva kiyo prabhuhim bani dasi
ਅਰਥ:Among the fourteen jewels you were the very treasure of joy; you served the Lord, becoming his consort.
ਜਬ ਜਬ ਜਨ੍ਮ ਜਹਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਲੀਨ੍ਹਾ । ਰੂਪ ਬਦਲ ਤਹਂ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀਨ੍ਹਾ ॥
Jaba jaba janma jaham prabhu linha Rupa badala taham seva kinha
ਅਰਥ:Wherever and whenever the Lord took birth, changing your form, you served him there.
ਸ੍ਵਯਂ ਵਿष੍ਣੁ ਜਬ ਨਰ ਤਨੁ ਧਾਰਾ । ਲੀਨ੍ਹੇਉ ਅਵਧਪੁਰੀ ਅਵਤਾਰਾ ॥
Svayam vishnu jaba nara tanu dhara Linheu avadhapuri avatara
ਅਰਥ:When Vishnu himself took a human body, he incarnated at Avadhpuri (as Rama).
ਤਬ ਤੁਮ ਪ੍ਰਕਟ ਜਨਕਪੁਰ ਮਾਹੀਂ । ਸੇਵਾ ਕਿਯੋ ਹृਦਯ ਪੁਲਕਾਹੀਂ ॥
Taba tuma prakata janakapura mahim Seva kiyo hridaya pulakahim
ਅਰਥ:Then you appeared in Janakpur (as Sita) and served him with a heart full of joy.
ਅਪਨਾਯੋ ਤੋਹਿ ਅਨ੍ਤਰ੍ਯਾਮੀ । ਵਿਸ਼੍ਵ ਵਿਦਿਤ ਤ੍ਰਿਭੁਵਨ ਕੀ ਸ੍ਵਾਮੀ ॥
Apanayo tohi antaryami Vishva vidita tribhuvana ki svami
ਅਰਥ:The inner-knower made you his own; you are renowned through the world as the mistress of the three realms.
ਤੁਮ ਸਬ ਪ੍ਰਬਲ ਸ਼ਕ੍ਤਿ ਨਹਿਂ ਆਨੀ । ਕਹਂ ਤਕ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਕਹੌਂ ਬਖਾਨੀ ॥
Tuma saba prabala shakti nahim ani Kahan taka mahima kahaum bakhani
ਅਰਥ:None can match your mighty power; how far can I tell and describe your glory?
ਮਨ ਕ੍ਰਮ ਵਚਨ ਕਰੈ ਸੇਵਕਾਈ । ਮਨ-ਇਚ੍ਛਿਤ ਵਾਂਛਿਤ ਫਲ ਪਾਈ ॥
Mana krama vachana karai sevakai Mana-ichchhita vamchhita phala pai
ਅਰਥ:Whoever serves you in thought, deed and word obtains the desired and longed-for fruit.
ਤਜਿ ਛਲ ਕਪਟ ਔਰ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ । ਪੂਜਹਿਂ ਵਿਵਿਧ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਮਨ ਲਾਈ ॥
Taji chhala kapata aura chaturai Pujahim vividha bhanti mana lai
ਅਰਥ:Forsaking deceit, cunning and trickery, they worship you in many ways with a devoted heart.
ਔਰ ਹਾਲ ਮੈਂ ਕਹੌਂ ਬੁਝਾਈ । ਜੋ ਯਹ ਪਾਠ ਕਰੇ ਮਨ ਲਾਈ ॥
Aura hala maim kahaum bujhai Jo yaha patha kare mana lai
ਅਰਥ:And I tell you another truth: whoever recites this with a devoted mind —
ਤਾਕੋ ਕੋਈ ਕष੍ਟ ਨ ਹੋਈ । ਮਨ ਇਚ੍ਛਿਤ ਫਲ ਪਾਵੈ ਫਲ ਸੋਈ ॥
Tako koi kashta na hoi Mana ichchhita phala pavai phala soi
ਅਰਥ:— no suffering befalls them; they obtain the very fruit their heart desires.
ਤ੍ਰਾਹਿ-ਤ੍ਰਾਹਿ ਜਯ ਦੁਃਖ ਨਿਵਾਰਿਣੀ । ਤ੍ਰਿਵਿਧ ਤਾਪ ਭਵ ਬਂਧਨ ਹਾਰਿਣਿ ॥
Trahi-trahi jaya duhkha nivarini Trividha tapa bhava bamdhana harini
ਅਰਥ:'Save us, save us!' — victory, O remover of sorrow, destroyer of the three-fold afflictions and the bonds of existence.
ਜੋ ਯਹ ਚਾਲੀਸਾ ਪਢ़ੇ ਔਰ ਪਢ़ਾਵੇ । ਇਸੇ ਧ੍ਯਾਨ ਲਗਾਕਰ ਸੁਨੇ ਸੁਨਾਵੈ ॥
Jo yaha chalisa padha़e aura padha़ave Ise dhyana lagakara sune sunavai
ਅਰਥ:Whoever reads this Chalisa and has it read, and listens and recites it with meditative attention —
ਤਾਕੋ ਕੋਈ ਨ ਰੋਗ ਸਤਾਵੈ । ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਆਦਿ ਧਨ ਸਮ੍ਪਤ੍ਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
Tako koi na roga satavai Putra adi dhana sampatti pavai
ਅਰਥ:— no disease torments them; they obtain children, wealth and prosperity.
ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਹੀਨ ਔਰ ਸਮ੍ਪਤ੍ਤਿ ਹੀਨਾ । ਅਨ੍ਧਾ ਬਧਿਰ ਕੋਢ़ੀ ਅਤਿ ਦੀਨਾ ॥
Putra hina aura sampatti hina Andha badhira kodha़i ati dina
ਅਰਥ:The one without a son and without wealth, the blind, the deaf, the leper, the utterly wretched —
ਵਿਪ੍ਰ ਬੋਲਾਯ ਕੈ ਪਾਠ ਕਰਾਵੈ । ਸ਼ਂਕਾ ਦਿਲ ਮੇਂ ਕਭੀ ਨ ਲਾਵੈ ॥
Vipra bolaya kai patha karavai Shamka dila mem kabhi na lavai
ਅਰਥ:— let them call a brahmin and have it recited, never harbouring doubt in the heart.
ਪਾਠ ਕਰਾਵੈ ਦਿਨ ਚਾਲੀਸਾ । ਤਾ ਪਰ ਕृਪਾ ਕਰੈਂ ਗੌਰੀਸਾ ॥

ਅਰਥ:Have the Chalisa recited for forty days, and Gaurisha (Shiva) and the Mother will show their grace.
ਸੁਖ ਸਮ੍ਪਤ੍ਤਿ ਬਹੁਤ ਸੀ ਪਾਵੈ । ਕਮੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਾਹੂ ਕੀ ਆਵੈ ॥
Sukha sampatti bahuta si pavai Kami nahim kahu ki avai
ਅਰਥ:They obtain abundant happiness and wealth; no lack ever comes to them.
ਬਾਰਹ ਮਾਸ ਕਰੈ ਜੋ ਪੂਜਾ । ਤੇਹਿ ਸਮ ਧਨ੍ਯ ਔਰ ਨਹਿਂ ਦੂਜਾ ॥
Baraha masa karai jo puja Tehi sama dhanya aura nahim duja
ਅਰਥ:Whoever performs the worship for twelve months — none is more blessed than they.
ਪ੍ਰਤਿਦਿਨ ਪਾਠ ਕਰੈ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀਂ । ਉਨ ਸਮ ਕੋਈ ਜਗ ਮੇਂ ਨਾਹਿਂ ॥
Pratidina patha karai mana mahim Una sama koi jaga mem nahim
ਅਰਥ:Whoever recites it daily within the heart — none in the world is their equal.
ਬਹੁ ਵਿਧਿ ਕ੍ਯਾ ਮੈਂ ਕਰੌਂ ਬਡ़ਾਈ । ਲੇਯ ਪਰੀਕ੍षਾ ਧ੍ਯਾਨ ਲਗਾਈ ॥
Bahu vidhi kya maim karaum bada़ai Leya pariksha dhyana lagai
ਅਰਥ:In how many ways shall I sing your praise? Put it to the test, fixing your mind in meditation.
ਕਰਿ ਵਿਸ਼੍ਵਾਸ ਕਰੈਂ ਵ੍ਰਤ ਨੇਮਾ । ਹੋਯ ਸਿਦ੍ਧ ਉਪਜੈ ਉਰ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਾ ॥
Kari vishvasa karaim vrata nema Hoya siddha upajai ura prema
ਅਰਥ:Whoever keeps the vow with faith and discipline attains fulfilment, and love springs up in the heart.
ਜਯ ਜਯ ਜਯ ਲਕ੍ष੍ਮੀ ਮਹਾਰਾਨੀ । ਸਬ ਮੇਂ ਵ੍ਯਾਪਿਤ ਜੋ ਗੁਣ ਖਾਨੀ ॥

ਅਰਥ:Victory, victory, victory, O Queen Lakshmi, the mine of all virtues who pervades everything.
ਤੁਮ੍ਹਰੋ ਤੇਜ ਪ੍ਰਬਲ ਜਗ ਮਾਹੀਂ । ਤੁਮ ਸਮ ਕੋਉ ਦਯਾਲ ਕਹੂਂ ਨਾਹੀਂ ॥
Tumharo teja prabala jaga mahim Tuma sama kou dayala kahun nahim
ਅਰਥ:Your splendour is mighty in the world; nowhere is anyone as compassionate as you.
ਮੋਹਿ ਅਨਾਥ ਕੀ ਸੁਧਿ ਅਬ ਲੀਜੈ । ਸਂਕਟ ਕਾਟਿ ਭਕ੍ਤਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਦੀਜੇ ॥
Mohi anatha ki sudhi aba lijai Samkata kati bhakti mohi dije
ਅਰਥ:Take heed now of me, the orphan; cut away my distress and grant me devotion.
ਭੂਲ ਚੂਕ ਕਰੀ ਕ੍षਮਾ ਹਮਾਰੀ । ਦਰ੍ਸ਼ਨ ਦੀਜੈ ਦਸ਼ਾ ਨਿਹਾਰੀ ॥
Bhula chuka kari kshama hamari Darshana dijai dasha nihari
ਅਰਥ:Forgive my errors and mistakes; grant me your darshan, beholding my condition.
ਬਿਨ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਵ੍ਯਾਕੁਲ ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀ । ਤੁਮਹਿਂ ਅਕ੍षਤ ਦੁਃਖ ਸਹਤੇ ਭਾਰੀ ॥
Bina darashana vyakula adhikari Tumahim akshata duhkha sahate bhari
ਅਰਥ:Without your vision the devotee is distraught; in your absence I bear grievous sorrow.
ਨਹਿਂ ਮੋਹਿਂ ਜ੍ਞਾਨ ਬੁਦ੍ਧਿ ਹੈ ਤਨ ਮੇਂ । ਸਬ ਜਾਨਤ ਹੋ ਅਪਨੇ ਮਨ ਮੇਂ ॥
Nahim mohim jnana buddhi hai tana mem Saba janata ho apane mana mem
ਅਰਥ:I have no knowledge or intellect within me; you know everything in your own mind.
ਰੂਪ ਚਤੁਰ੍ਭੁਜ ਕਰਕੇ ਧਾਰਣ । ਕष੍ਟ ਮੋਰ ਅਬ ਕਰਹੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਣ ॥
Rupa chaturbhuja karake dharana Kashta mora aba karahu nivarana
ਅਰਥ:Bearing your four-armed form, now remove my every suffering.
ਕਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਮੈਂ ਕਰੌਂ ਬਡ़ਾਈ । ਜ੍ਞਾਨ ਬੁਦ੍ਧਿ ਮੋਹਿਂ ਨਹਿਂ ਅਧਿਕਾਈ ॥
Kahi prakara maim karaum bada़ai Jnana buddhi mohim nahim adhikai
ਅਰਥ:In what way shall I sing your greatness? I have no great knowledge or wit.
ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਅਬ ਕਹੈ ਪੁਕਾਰੀ । ਕਰੋ ਦੂਰ ਤੁਮ ਵਿਪਤਿ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥
Ramadasa aba kahai pukari Karo dura tuma vipati hamari
ਅਰਥ:Ramdas now calls out and prays: drive far away our every calamity, O Mother.
ਤ੍ਰਾਹਿ ਤ੍ਰਾਹਿ ਦੁਃਖ ਹਾਰਿਣੀ ਹਰੋ ਬੇਗਿ ਸਬ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ । ਜਯਤਿ ਜਯਤਿ ਜਯ ਲਕ੍ष੍ਮੀ ਕਰੋ ਸ਼ਤ੍ਰੁਨ ਕਾ ਨਾਸ਼ ॥

ਅਰਥ:Save us, save us, O remover of sorrow! Swiftly remove all our fear; victory, victory, O Lakshmi, destroy our foes.

On Friday or at Diwali, after bathing, sit before an image of Goddess Lakshmi. Light a ghee lamp, offer red flowers, kumkum, rice and sweets, and recite the opening doha and the forty chaupais with devotion. The Chalisa recommends recitation for forty days, or worship through the year, for her full grace. Conclude with the Lakshmi aarti.
