Origin & Story

Traditional Shakta / Vaishnava Puranic source · Traditional (revealed by Brahma to Indra) · Ancient (Puranic)

The Mahalakshmi Kavacham is set as a dialogue in which Indra, anxious to protect the gods, requests Brahma to impart a complete protective armour. Brahma reveals the divine Kavacha of Mahalakshmi — the bestower of all wealth — declaring that whoever wears or recites it gains prosperity, the growth of family, victory and freedom from all evil. Because of its power, it is taught as a closely held secret to be entrusted only to the worthy.

As told in scripture

It is traditionally believed that in a household where this Kavacha is recited daily with faith, Goddess Lakshmi never withdraws her presence — wealth and grain steadily increase, the family flourishes, and no ghost, spirit or misfortune can cross its threshold, for the home is wrapped in the very armour of the Mother of fortune.

Recite the Viniyoga first, then chant the Kavacham with devotion, mentally placing each name of the Goddess upon the corresponding part of the body. For the prescribed fruit, recite it at the three junctures (Trikala). Conclude by bowing to Mahalakshmi and praying for prosperity and protection of the household.

Yes — only the script changes; the words and their meaning are the original. The verse-by-verse meaning, benefits and how-to-chant guidance on this page apply exactly the same.
Mahalakshmi Kavacham means 'the armour of Mahalakshmi'. It is a protective hymn in which Goddess Lakshmi is invoked by her many names to guard each part of the body, while bestowing wealth, prosperity and protection from all evil forces.
In the traditional dialogue, it is revealed by Brahma to Indra (the king of the gods), who sought a protective armour for the deities. It is regarded as a closely guarded secret armour of the Goddess of fortune.
Reciting it thrice daily is traditionally said to bring abundance of wealth and grain, growth of one's family and progeny, victory in undertakings, freedom from ghosts and evil spirits, and the fulfilment of all righteous desires.
It is ideally recited at the three junctures of the day (Trikala). Fridays, the festival of Diwali, and Akshaya Tritiya are especially auspicious occasions for its recitation to invoke Lakshmi's blessings of prosperity.
