Santoshi Mata, the Goddess of Contentment, rose to immense popularity across North India in the 20th century, especially after the 1975 film 'Jai Santoshi Maa'. Worshipped as the daughter of Ganesha and Riddhi-Siddhi, she is beloved for the simple Friday vrat — an offering of jaggery and chickpeas and a heart free of sourness and discontent. This Chalisa garlands her many forms across India's shrines and promises peace to all who take her refuge.

અર્થ:I bow at the feet of Santoshi Mata, giver of prosperity and perfection; merely meditating on her, one crosses the ocean of sorrow.
ભક્તોં કો સંતોષ દે સંતોષી તવ નામ। કૃપા કરહુ જગદમ્બ અબ આયા તેરે ધામ॥

અર્થ:Grant contentment to your devotees, O Santoshi, whose very name is solace; show your grace, O Mother of the world — I have come to your abode.
જય સન્તોષી માત અનુપમ। શાંતિ દાયિની રૂપ મનોરમ॥

અર્થ:Victory to Mother Santoshi, peerless one, of peace-giving and enchanting form.
સુન્દર વરણ ચતુર્ભુજ રૂપ। વેશ મનોહર લલિત અનુપા॥
Sundara varana chaturbhuja rupa Vesha manohara lalita anupa
અર્થ:Of fair complexion and four-armed form, of charming dress, graceful and unmatched.
શ્વેતામ્બર રૂપ મનહારી। માં તુમ્હારી છવિ જગ સે ન્યારી॥
Shvetambara rupa manahari Man tumhari chhavi jaga se nyari
અર્થ:Robed in white, your form steals the heart; your image, O Mother, is unlike any in the world.
દિવ્ય સ્વરૂપા આયત લોચન। દર્શન સે હો સંકટમોચન॥
Divya svarupa ayata lochana Darshana se ho samkatamochana
અર્થ:Of divine form and wide eyes — your mere sight dispels every distress.
જય ગણેશ કી સુતા ભવાની। રિદ્ધિ- સિદ્ધિ કી પુત્રી જ્ઞાની॥
Jaya ganesha ki suta bhavani Riddhi- siddhi ki putri jnani
અર્થ:Victory, O daughter of Ganesha, O Bhavani; wise daughter of Riddhi and Siddhi.
અગમ અગોચર તુમ્હરી માયા। સબ પર કરો કૃપા કી છાયા॥
Agama agochara tumhari maya Saba para karo kripa ki chhaya
અર્થ:Unfathomable and unseen is your power (Maya); cast the shade of your grace upon all.
નામ અનેક તુમ્હારે માતા। અખિલ વિશ્વ હૈ તુમકો ધ્યાતા॥
Nama aneka tumhare mata Akhila vishva hai tumako dhyata
અર્થ:Many are your names, O Mother; the whole universe meditates upon you.
તુમને રૂપ અનેકોં ધારે। કો કહિ સકે ચરિત્ર તુમ્હારે॥
Tumane rupa anekom dhare Ko kahi sake charitra tumhare
અર્થ:You have assumed countless forms — who can tell of all your deeds?
ધામ અનેક કહાં તક કહિયે। સુમિરન તબ કરકે સુખ લહિયે॥
Dhama aneka kahan taka kahiye Sumirana taba karake sukha lahiye
અર્થ:How many of your abodes can one name? Remembering you, one gains happiness.
વિન્ધ્યાચલ મેં વિન્ધ્યવાસિની। કોટેશ્વર સરસ્વતી સુહાસિની॥
Vindhyachala mem vindhyavasini Koteshvara sarasvati suhasini
અર્થ:In the Vindhya hills you are Vindhyavasini; at Koteshwar, the fair-smiling Saraswati.
કલકત્તે મેં તૂ હી કાલી। દુષ્ટ નાશિની મહાકરાલી॥
Kalakatte mem tu hi kali Dushta nashini mahakarali
અર્થ:In Kolkata you yourself are Kali, the destroyer of the wicked, the greatly fearsome one.
સમ્બલ પુર બહુચરા કહાતી। ભક્તજનોં કા દુખ મિટાતી॥
Sambala pura bahuchara kahati Bhaktajanom ka dukha mitati
અર્થ:At Sambalpur you are called Bahuchara, wiping away the sorrows of devotees.
જ્વાલા જી મેં જ્વાલા દેવી। પૂજત નિત્ય ભક્ત જન સેવી॥
Jvala ji mem jvala devi Pujata nitya bhakta jana sevi
અર્થ:At Jwala Ji you are the Goddess of Flame, ever worshipped by faithful devotees.
નગર બમ્બઈ કી મહારાની। મહા લક્ષ્મી તુમ કલ્યાણી॥
Nagara bambai ki maharani Maha lakshmi tuma kalyani
અર્થ:You are the great queen of the city of Bombay, the auspicious Mahalakshmi.
મદુરા મેં મીનાક્ષી તુમ હો। સુખ દુખ સબકી સાક્ષી તુમ હો॥
Madura mem minakshi tuma ho Sukha dukha sabaki sakshi tuma ho
અર્થ:At Madurai you are Meenakshi; you are the witness of everyone's joys and sorrows.
રાજનગર મેં તુમ જગદમ્બે। બની ભદ્રકાલી તુમ અમ્બે॥
Rajanagara mem tuma jagadambe Bani bhadrakali tuma ambe
અર્થ:At Rajnagar you are Jagadamba; you became Bhadrakali, O Mother Amba.
પાવાગઢ़ મેં દુર્ગા માતા। અખિલ વિશ્વ તેરા યશ ગાતા॥
Pavagadha़ mem durga mata Akhila vishva tera yasha gata
અર્થ:At Pavagadh you are Durga Mata; the whole world sings your glory.
કાશીપુરાધીશ્વરી માતા। અન્નપૂર્ણા નામ સુહાતા॥
Kashipuradhishvari mata Annapurna nama suhata
અર્થ:As ruler of Kashi you are Mother Annapurna, whose name is ever sweet.
સર્વાનંદ કરો કલ્યાણી। તુમ્હીં શારદા અમૃતવાણી॥
Sarvanamda karo kalyani Tumhim sharada amritavani
અર્થ:Bestow welfare on all, O auspicious one; you yourself are Sharada of nectar-speech.
તુમ્હરી મહિમા જલ મેં થલ મેં। દુઃખ દારિદ્ર સબ મેટો પલ મેં॥
Tumhari mahima jala mem thala mem Duhkha daridra saba meto pala mem
અર્થ:Your glory pervades the waters and the land; in an instant you wipe away all sorrow and poverty.
જેતે ઋષિ ઔર મુનીશા। નારદ દેવ ઔર દેવેશા।
Jete rishi aura munisha Narada deva aura devesha
અર્થ:However many sages and great munis there are, and Narada and the lords of gods —
ઇસ જગતી કે નર ઔર નારી। ધ્યાન ધરત હૈં માત તુમ્હારી॥
Isa jagati ke nara aura nari Dhyana dharata haim mata tumhari
અર્થ:— all the men and women of this world meditate upon you, O Mother.
જાપર કૃપા તુમ્હારી હોતી। વહ પાતા ભક્તિ કા મોતી॥
Japara kripa tumhari hoti Vaha pata bhakti ka moti
અર્થ:Upon whomever your grace descends, that one obtains the pearl of devotion.
દુઃખ દારિદ્ર સંકટ મિટ જાતા। ધ્યાન તુમ્હારા જો જન ધ્યાતા॥
Duhkha daridra samkata mita jata Dhyana tumhara jo jana dhyata
અર્થ:Sorrow, poverty and calamity vanish for the one who meditates upon you.
જો જન તુમ્હરી મહિમા ગાવૈ। ધ્યાન તુમ્હારા કર સુખ પાવૈ॥
Jo jana tumhari mahima gavai Dhyana tumhara kara sukha pavai
અર્થ:Whoever sings your glory and meditates on you finds happiness.
જો મન રાખે શુદ્ધ ભાવના। તાકી પૂરણ કરો કામના॥
Jo mana rakhe shuddha bhavana Taki purana karo kamana
અર્થ:Whoever keeps a pure heart — their every wish you fulfil.
કુમતિ નિવારિ સુમતિ કી દાત્રી। જયતિ જયતિ માતા જગધાત્રી॥
Kumati nivari sumati ki datri Jayati jayati mata jagadhatri
અર્થ:Remover of dull wit, bestower of good understanding — victory, victory, O Mother, sustainer of the world!
શુક્રવાર કા દિવસ સુહાવન। જો વ્રત કરે તુમ્હારા પાવન॥
Shukravara ka divasa suhavana Jo vrata kare tumhara pavana
અર્થ:Pleasant is the day of Friday; whoever keeps your holy fast,
ગુડ़ છોલે કા ભોગ લગાવૈ। કથા તુમ્હારી સુને સુનાવે॥
Guda़ chhole ka bhoga lagavai Katha tumhari sune sunave
અર્થ:— offers jaggery and roasted chickpeas (gud-chana), and hears and tells your story,
વિધિવત પૂજા કરે તુમ્હારી। ફિર પ્રસાદ પાવે શુભકારી॥
Vidhivata puja kare tumhari Phira prasada pave shubhakari
અર્થ:— and worships you with due rites, then receives your blessed prasad.
શક્તિ- સામરથ હો જો ધનકો। દાન- દક્ષિણા દે વિપ્રન કો॥
Shakti- samaratha ho jo dhanako Dana- dakshina de viprana ko
અર્થ:Those of means who give charity and dakshina to the brahmins,
વે જગતી કે નર ઔ નારી। મનવાંછિત ફલ પાવેં ભારી॥
Ve jagati ke nara au nari Manavamchhita phala pavem bhari
અર્થ:— those men and women of the world obtain abundantly their heart's desire.
જો જન શરણ તુમ્હારી જાવે। સો નિશ્ચય ભવ સે તર જાવે॥
Jo jana sharana tumhari jave So nishchaya bhava se tara jave
અર્થ:Whoever takes refuge in you surely crosses over the ocean of existence.
તુમ્હરો ધ્યાન કુમારી ધ્યાવે। નિશ્ચય મનવાંછિત વર પાવૈ॥
Tumharo dhyana kumari dhyave Nishchaya manavamchhita vara pavai
અર્થ:The maiden who meditates on you certainly attains the husband she desires.
સધવા પૂજા કરે તુમ્હારી। અમર સુહાગિન હો વહ નારી॥
Sadhava puja kare tumhari Amara suhagina ho vaha nari
અર્થ:The married woman who worships you becomes an ever-blessed, undying suhagin (happily wed).
વિધવા ધર કે ધ્યાન તુમ્હારા। ભવસાગર સે ઉતરે પારા॥
Vidhava dhara ke dhyana tumhara Bhavasagara se utare para
અર્થ:The widow who holds your meditation crosses over the ocean of existence.
જયતિ જયતિ જય સંકટ હરણી। વિઘ્ન વિનાશન મંગલ કરની॥
Jayati jayati jaya samkata harani Vighna vinashana mamgala karani
અર્થ:Victory, victory, victory, O remover of calamity, destroyer of obstacles, doer of good!
હમ પર સંકટ હૈ અતિ ભારી। વેગિ ખબર લો માત હમારી॥
Hama para samkata hai ati bhari Vegi khabara lo mata hamari
અર્થ:A great calamity is upon us — come swiftly, O Mother, and look upon us.
સંતોષી માં કે સદા બંદહૂં પગ નિશ વાસ। પૂર્ણ મનોરથ હો સકલ માત હરૌ ભવ ત્રાસ॥

Santoshi Mata Chalisa પાઠના લાભ
Recitation of the Santoshi Mata Chalisa brings contentment (santosh), peace and the fulfilment of sincere wishes.
It is the heart of the popular Santoshi Mata Friday (Shukravar) vrat, removing sorrow, poverty and calamity.
Said to grant a good husband to maidens, lasting saubhagya to married women, and refuge to all who take shelter in the Mother.
Recounts the Goddess's many forms across India's holy shrines, deepening devotion to the Divine Mother.
Calms anxiety and discontent, replacing them with gratitude and steadiness of mind.
Especially recited on Fridays, with an offering of jaggery and roasted chickpeas (gud-chana).
Santoshi Mata Chalisa જપ વિધિ
On Friday, after bathing, sit before an image of Santoshi Mata and offer gud (jaggery) and chana (roasted chickpeas). Light a lamp, recite the opening doha and the chaupais with devotion, and listen to or tell the vrat katha. Avoid sour foods on the fast day. Conclude with aarti and distribute the prasad. The vrat is traditionally observed for 16 Fridays.
