Chanakya, himself a learned acharya who shaped an empire by his wisdom, repeatedly exalted knowledge above material wealth. In this verse he heaps three great images upon vidya — the wish-fulfilling cow, the protecting mother, and the hidden treasure — to teach that learning is the surest and most enduring of all forms of wealth.

It is said of many a scholar who lost everything in misfortune yet rose again by their learning alone, that they proved this verse true — for knowledge, the hidden treasure none could steal, fed them like a mother and bore fruit even in their hardest season.

ഏതെങ്കിലും വരിയിലോ ▶ ബട്ടണിലോ തൊട്ട് കേൾക്കൂ
കാമധേനുഗുണാ വിദ്യാ ഹ്യകാലേ ഫലദായിനീ। പ്രവാസേ മാതൃസദൃശീ വിദ്യാ ഗുപ്തം ധനം സ്മൃതമ്॥
kāmadhenu-guṇā vidyā hy akāle phala-dāyinī। pravāse mātṛ-sadṛśī vidyā guptaṁ dhanaṁ smṛtam॥
അർഥം:विद्या कामधेनु (इच्छापूर्ति करने वाली दिव्य गाय) के समान है, क्योंकि वह विपरीत एवं असमय में भी फल देती है; परदेश में वह माता के समान (रक्षक एवं पोषक) है, और उसे एक गुप्त, अक्षय धन माना गया है। चाणक्य विद्या को समस्त सम्पत्तियों में सबसे विश्वसनीय बताते हैं — पोषक, रक्षक एवं सदा फलदायिनी, तब भी जब और सब कुछ विफल हो जाए।
