Origin & Story
Kirtana of Bhadrachala Ramadasa in raga Varali, Adi tala (Telugu, 17th century CE) · Bhadrachala Ramadasa (Kancherla Gopanna) · c. 1620-1688 CE
Gopanna, tahsildar of Bhadrachalam, used the revenue he collected to raise a great temple to Rama on the Bhadra hill, earning both the name 'Ramadasa' and a prison cell in Golconda. His kirtanas made Bhadrachalam the Ayodhya of the south. In this song he stands where every pilgrim stands — on the banks of the Gautami, looking up at the gopurams he built — and cries out the darshan for all to share: 'There is Bhadradri! Behold!'
✦ As told in scripture
When the Golconda Sultan imprisoned Ramadasa for spending state revenue on the temple, tradition says Rama and Lakshmana themselves came by night as two young servants, Ramoji and Lakshmoji, and paid the ransom in gold coins stamped with Rama's own mark — coins still shown at Bhadrachalam. The Lord 'who openly protected Ramadasa' in this song is that very rescuer.
