Origin & Story

Venkatesha Suprabhatam suite (Sri Vaishnava tradition) ยท Prativadi Bhayankaram Annan (Annangaracharya) ยท 15th century CE

Lord Venkateswara โ€” also called Srinivasa, Balaji and the Lord of the Seven Hills โ€” is the presiding deity of Tirumala, the most visited temple in the world. The 15th-century acharya Prativadi Bhayankaram Annan composed a fourfold suite for the Lord: the Suprabhatam (awakening verses), this Stotram (praise), the Prapatti (surrender) and the Mangalasasanam (auspicious benediction). The Stotram, opening 'Kamalakucha choochuka kunkumato', has become one of the most cherished prayers in South Indian Vaishnavism, recited at the temple each dawn and in homes across the world.

โœฆ As told in scripture

It is held at Tirumala that the Lord, called Aapad-bandhava (friend in distress), never lets a sincere prayer go unanswered; countless devotees recount that surrendering through these very verses โ€” 'without Venkatesha there is no refuge' โ€” brought relief from seemingly impossible troubles and the fulfilment of long-cherished vows.

This page shows the complete Sri Venkateswara Stotram (Kamalakucha Choochuka) written in the Grantha script โ€” the same Sanskrit/Hindi verses, transliterated character-by-character so you can read and chant comfortably. Tap any line (or the โ–ถ button) to hear it recited aloud.
Yes โ€” only the script changes; the words and their meaning are the original. The verse-by-verse meaning, benefits and how-to-chant guidance on this page apply exactly the same.
It is a devotional hymn of eleven verses in praise of Lord Venkateswara (Balaji / Srinivasa) of Tirumala-Tirupati, beginning 'Kamalakucha choochuka kunkumato'. It forms part of the celebrated Venkatesha Suprabhatam suite recited at the Tirumala temple every morning.
It is traditionally ascribed to Prativadi Bhayankaram Annan (Annangaracharya), a 15th-century Sri Vaishnava acharya, who composed the Suprabhatam suite (Suprabhatam, Stotram, Prapatti and Mangalasasanam) for the Lord of Tirumala.
The opening verse says the Lord's dark-blue (nila) body is ever tinged red by the kumkuma (saffron) from the bosom of Goddess Lakshmi who rests on his chest โ€” a tender image of the inseparable union of Vishnu and Sri (Lakshmi).
It is recited daily in the early morning, traditionally right after the Venkatesha Suprabhatam, and especially on Saturdays which are dear to Lord Venkateswara. Devotees also chant it during Tirumala pilgrimage and on Vaishnava festivals.
