Origin & Story

Traditional Shakta hymn of the Sri Vidya / Kanchi tradition ยท Traditional (attributed within the Kanchi Kamakoti tradition) ยท Classical / Medieval

Kamakshi is the presiding Goddess of Kanchipuram, one of the foremost Shakti Peethas of India and a great centre of Sri Vidya worship. Legend holds that Devi performed penance here upon a sand-linga to win Lord Shiva (Ekamranatha) as Her lord, and that the fierce energy of the Goddess was gathered and pacified into the gentle, meditative Kamakshi who blesses devotees with grace. This stotram, in the lineage of hymns sung to Her, adores Her as the supreme Tripura Sundari seated in Kanchi, the Mother of speech and the bestower of all that is good.

โœฆ As told in scripture

It is traditionally said that the great teacher Adi Shankaracharya established the Sri Chakra before Kamakshi at Kanchi to calm the intensity of Her power into a benevolent grace, and that devotees who sing Her praises with a pure heart find their afflictions of the Kali age dissolved and their prayers for wisdom and refuge fulfilled.

Kamakshi is the supreme Divine Mother enshrined at Kanchipuram (Kanchi) in Tamil Nadu, one of the most important Shakti Peethas. Her name means 'She of loving eyes' (kama + akshi), and She is worshipped as a form of Tripura Sundari and the consort of Lord Shiva (Ekamranatha). It is said the Goddess holds Her energy here in a meditative, benevolent form.
It is a Sanskrit hymn of seven verses praising Devi Kamakshi's beauty, ornaments, seed-mantras and cosmic powers. Each verse ends with 'vande mahesha-priyam' โ€” 'I bow to the beloved of Mahesha (Shiva)'.
Tradition holds that it bestows the Mother's grace, eloquence and wisdom, grants dharma, prosperity and liberation, and removes the sins and impurities of the Kali age. It cultivates devotion and inner steadiness.
It may be chanted daily at dawn or dusk, and is especially auspicious on Fridays and during Navaratri, the great festival of the Goddess.
