The Mrityunjaya Manasika Puja Stotram, attributed to Adi Shankaracharya, is a hymn of 'mental worship' (manasa puja) of Shiva as Mrityunjaya, the conqueror of death. Since the Lord pervades all, the devotee offers — purely in imagination — a jewelled seat, sacred bath, garments, sandal, flowers, food, music, dance and prostrations, then surrenders all actions as worship and prays for forgiveness and protection. Its closing verse promises that one who recites it daily with devotion conquers death and attains the imperishable state of Shiva.

This hymn belongs to the tradition of manasa-puja stotras in which the worshipper, recognising that the all-pervading Lord needs nothing external, offers the entire sixteen-fold service (shodashopachara) within the heart. Composed in the spirit of Shankaracharya's better-known Shiva Manasa Puja, it specifically invokes Shiva as Mrityunjaya — the vanquisher of death — and culminates, like that hymn, in the surrender of all one's faults and actions, and the famous declaration that everything one does is itself worship of Shambhu.

Meaning:I meditate upon Mrityunjaya, the conqueror of death — seated at the foot of the wish-granting Kalpa tree on the jewel-studded Kailasa, his lovely body fair as camphor, crystal and the moon, attended by Katyayani (Parvati); the ocean of compassion whose matted hair is graced by the lofty waves of the Ganga and whose throat-ornament is the serpent Shesha.

सौवर्णे नवरत्नखण्डरचिते पात्रे घृतं पायसं भक्ष्यं पञ्चविधं पयोदधियुतं रम्भाफलं पानकम्। शाकानामयुतं जलं रुचिकरं कर्पूरखण्डोज्ज्वलं ताम्बूलं मनसा मया विरचितं भक्त्या प्रभो स्वीकुरु॥४॥

आत्मा त्वं गिरिजा मतिः सहचराः प्राणाः शरीरं गृहं पूजा ते विषयोपभोगरचना निद्रा समाधिस्थितिः। सञ्चारः पदयोः प्रदक्षिणविधिः स्तोत्राणि सर्वा गिरो यद्यत्कर्म करोमि तत्तदखिलं शम्भो तवाराधनम्॥६॥

Meaning:You are my very Self; Girija is my intellect; my life-breaths are your companions; my body is your temple; my every sensory enjoyment is your worship; my sleep is the state of samadhi; my walking is circumambulation of you; all my words are hymns to you. Whatever act I perform, all of it, O Shambhu, is your adoration.

करचरणकृतं वाक्कायजं कर्मजं वा श्रवणनयनजं वा मानसं वापराधम्। विहितमविहितं वा सर्वमेतत्क्षमस्व जय जय करुणाब्धे श्रीमहादेव शम्भो॥७॥
