The custom of worshipping a deity through 108 of his names (ashtottara-shatanama) is woven throughout the Puranas. Shiva's 108 names gather together the many faces of the Lord that appear across his myths — the auspicious Shambhu, the ash-clad ascetic, the slayer of Tripura, the conqueror of death, the cosmic Rudra of eight forms. Devotees have for ages used this namavali for daily archana, offering a bilva leaf at each name, regarding it as a complete and especially dear form of Shiva worship.

It is traditionally held that one who offers worship through Shiva's 108 names with a pure heart is freed from sin and untimely death — the names Mrityunjaya (conqueror of death) and Kalakala (death of Death) in this very litany recall how Shiva shields his devotees from the fear of mortality.

ଅର୍ଥ:This is the litany of the one hundred and eight sacred names of Lord Shiva, each offered with reverence as 'Om ... Namah' (Salutations to ...). The names invoke him as Shiva the Auspicious, Maheshvara the Great Lord, Shambhu the giver of joy, the wielder of the Pinaka bow, the moon-crested one, the bearer of the Ganga, the Death of Death, the destroyer of Tripura, the body smeared with ash, the three-eyed Lord whose eyes are sun, moon and fire, the five-faced Sadashiva, the Lord of the universe, the fierce Virabhadra, the conqueror of death (Mrityunjaya), the teacher of the world, Rudra, the sky-clad one of eight forms, Pashupati the Lord of beings, Mahadeva the Great God — culminating in Parameshvara, the Supreme Lord. Reciting these names, the devotee meditates upon every facet of Shiva's infinite glory.
