The Shiv Chalisa follows the Chalisa tradition popularized by Tulsidas, but its specific authorship is debated. It describes Lord Shiva in his complete form — the ascetic who is also the householder, the destroyer who is also the creator, the fierce one who is also compassionate. The narrative draws from the Shiva Purana, referencing his destruction of Tripurasur, his role in the Samudra Manthan (ocean churning), and his eternal dance of creation and dissolution.
✦ ଶାସ୍ତ୍ରରେ କୁହାଯାଇଥିବା ପରି
The Shiva Purana narrates that when the poison Halahala emerged during the churning of the cosmic ocean, threatening to destroy all creation, neither gods nor demons could contain it. Lord Shiva drank the entire poison to save the universe. Goddess Parvati pressed his throat to prevent it from entering his body, turning his throat blue — hence his name Neelkanth (Blue-Throated One). This act of self-sacrifice for all of creation is the ultimate demonstration of Shiva's compassion.

ଅର୍ଥ:Opening Doha: Victory to Ganesh, son of Girija (Parvati), the wise root of all auspiciousness. Ayodhyadas says — grant us the boon of fearlessness.

ଅର୍ଥ:Victory to the Lord of Parvati, compassionate to the humble. You always protect the saints.
ଭାଲ ଚନ୍ଦ୍ରମା ସୋହତ ନୀକେ। କାନନ କୁଣ୍ଡଲ ନାଗଫନୀ କେ॥
Bhal Chandrama Sohat Neeke Kanan Kundal Nagphani Ke
ଅର୍ଥ:The crescent moon adorns your forehead beautifully. Your earrings are serpent hoods.
ଅଂଗ ଗୌର ଶିର ଗଂଗ ବହାଯେ। ମୁଣ୍ଡମାଲ ତନ ଛାର ଲଗାଯେ॥
Ang Gaur Shir Gang Bahaye Mundmal Tan Chhar Lagaye
ଅର୍ଥ:Your body is fair, the Ganga flows from your head. You wear a garland of skulls and smear ash on your body.
ଵସ୍ତ୍ର ଖାଲ ବାଘମ୍ବର ସୋହେ। ଛଵି କୋ ଦେଖ ନାଗ ମୁନି ମୋହେ॥
Vastra Khal Baghambr Sohe Chhavi Ko Dekh Naag Muni Mohe
ଅର୍ଥ:You are adorned in tiger skin. Seeing your beauty, even serpents and sages are enchanted.
ମୈନା ମାତୁ କୀ ହଵୈ ଦୁଲାରୀ। ଵାମ ଅଂଗ ସୋହତ ଛଵି ନ୍ଯାରୀ॥
Maina Matu Ki Havai Dulari Vam Ang Sohat Chhavi Nyari
ଅର୍ଥ:Parvati, the beloved daughter of Maina, sits at your left side in unique splendor.
କର ତ୍ରିଶୂଲ ସୋହତ ଛଵି ଭାରୀ। କରତ ସଦା ଶତ୍ରୁନ କ୍ଷଯକାରୀ॥
Kar Trishul Sohat Chhavi Bhari Karat Sada Shatrun Kshayakari
ଅର୍ଥ:The trident in your hand looks magnificent. You constantly destroy all enemies.
ନନ୍ଦି ଗଣେଶ ସୋହତ ତହଂ କୈସେ। ସାଗର ମଧ୍ଯ କମଲ ହୈଂ ଜୈସେ॥
Nandi Ganesh Sohat Tahan Kaise Sagar Madhya Kamal Hain Jaise
ଅର୍ଥ:Nandi and Ganesh sit beside you, like lotuses in the middle of an ocean.
କାର୍ତିକ ଶ୍ଯାମ ଔର ଗଣରାଊ। ଯା ଛଵି କୋ କହି ଜାତ ନ କାଊ॥
Kartik Shyam Aur Ganrau Ya Chhavi Ko Kahi Jaat Na Kau
ଅର୍ଥ:Kartikeya, the dark one, and lord Ganesha — no one can describe this divine vision.
ଦେଵନ ଜବହୀଂ ଜାଯ ପୁକାରା। ତବହୀଂ ଦୁଖ ପ୍ରଭୁ ଆପ ନିଵାରା॥
Devan Jabahi Jaay Pukara Tabahi Dukh Prabhu Aap Nivara
ଅର୍ଥ:Whenever the gods come crying to you, you immediately remove their sorrows.
କିଯା ଉପଦ୍ରଵ ତାରକ ଭାରୀ। ଦେଵନ ସବ ମିଲି ତୁମହିଂ ଜୁହାରୀ॥
Kiya Upadrav Tarak Bhari Devan Sab Mili Tumhi Juhari
ଅର୍ଥ:When the demon Tarak caused great havoc, all the gods together came to pray to you.
ତୁରତ ଷଡାନନ ଆପ ପଠାଯଊ। ଲଵନିମେଷ ମହଂ ମାରି ଗିରାଯଊ॥
Turat Shadanan Aap Pathayau Lav Nimesh Mahan Maari Girayau
ଅର୍ଥ:You immediately sent your six-faced son (Kartikeya). In the blink of an eye, he slew and felled the demon.
ଆପ ଜଲନ୍ଧର ଅସୁର ସଂହାରା। ସୁଯଶ ତୁମ୍ହାର ଵିଦିତ ସଂସାରା॥
Aap Jalandhar Asur Samhara Suyash Tumhar Vidit Sansara
ଅର୍ଥ:You yourself destroyed the demon Jalandhar. Your glory is known throughout the world.
ତ୍ରିପୁରାସୁର ସନ ଯୁଦ୍ଧ ମଚାଈ। ସବହିଂ କୃପା କରି ଲୀନ ବଚାଈ॥
Tripurasur San Yuddh Machai Sabhi Kripa Kari Leen Bachai
ଅର୍ଥ:You waged war against the demon Tripurasur. With your grace, you saved everyone.
କିଯା ତପହିଂ ଭାଗୀରଥ ଭାରୀ। ପୁରବ ପ୍ରତିଜ୍ଞା ତାସୁ ପୁରାରୀ॥
Kiya Tapahi Bhagirath Bhari Purab Pratigya Tasu Purari
ଅର୍ଥ:Bhagirath performed great penance. You fulfilled his ancient vow, O Lord.
ଦାନିନ ମହଂ ତୁମ ସମ କୋଉ ନାହୀଂ। ସେଵକ ସ୍ତୁତି କରତ ସଦାହୀଂ॥
Danin Mahan Tum Sam Kou Nahin Sevak Stuti Karat Sadahin
ଅର୍ଥ:Among the generous, none equals you. Your devotees always sing your praises.
ଵେଦ ନାମ ମହିମା ତଵ ଗାଈଂ। ଅକଥ ଅନାଦି ଭେଦ ନହିଂ ପାଈଂ॥
Ved Naam Mahima Tav Gayin Akath Anadi Bhed Nahin Payin
ଅର୍ଥ:The Vedas sing the glory of your name. Indescribable, beginningless — they cannot fathom your mystery.
ପ୍ରଗଟ ଉଦଧି ମଂଥନ ମେଂ ଜ୍ଵାଲା। ଜରତ ସୁରାସୁର ଭଏ ବିହାଲା॥
Pragat Udadhi Manthan Mein Jwala Jarat Surasur Bhaye Bihala
ଅର୍ଥ:During the churning of the ocean, terrible poison emerged. Both gods and demons were distraught as it burned.
କୀନ୍ହ ଦଯା ତହଂ କରୀ ସହାଈ। ନୀଲକଂଠ ତବ ନାମ କହାଈ॥
Keenh Daya Tahan Kari Sahai Neelkanth Tab Naam Kahai
ଅର୍ଥ:You showed mercy and came to their aid. Then you were called Neelkanth (the blue-throated one).
ପୂଜନ ରାମଚନ୍ଦ୍ର ଜବ କୀନ୍ହା। ଜୀତ କେ ଲଂକ ଵିଭୀଷଣ ଦୀନ୍ହା॥
Poojan Ramchandra Jab Keenha Jeet Ke Lanka Vibheeshan Deenha
ଅର୍ଥ:When Lord Ramchandra performed your worship, he conquered Lanka and gave it to Vibhishana.
ସହସ କମଲ ମେଂ ହୋ ରହେ ଧାରୀ। କୀନ୍ହ ପରୀକ୍ଷା ତବହିଂ ପୁରାରୀ॥
Sahas Kamal Mein Ho Rahe Dhari Keenh Pariksha Tabahi Purari
ଅର୍ଥ:Ram was offering a thousand lotuses to you. Then you, O Lord, tested his devotion.
ଏକ କମଲ ପ୍ରଭୁ ରାଖେଉ ଜୋଈ। କମଲ ନଯନ ପୂଜନ ଚହଂ ସୋଈ॥
Ek Kamal Prabhu Rakheu Joi Kamal Nayan Poojan Chaha Soi
ଅର୍ଥ:You hid one lotus. Ram offered his own lotus-like eye in its place.
କଠିନ ଭକ୍ତି ଦେଖୀ ପ୍ରଭୁ ଶଂକର। ଭଏ ପ୍ରସନ୍ନ ଦିଏ ଇଚ୍ଛିତ ଵର॥
Kathin Bhakti Dekhi Prabhu Shankar Bhaye Prasanna Diye Ichchhit Var
ଅର୍ଥ:Seeing such intense devotion, Lord Shankar was pleased and granted him the desired boon.
ଜଯ ଜଯ ଜଯ ଅନନ୍ତ ଅଵିନାଶୀ। କରତ କୃପା ସବକେ ଘଟଵାସୀ॥
Jai Jai Jai Anant Avinashi Karat Kripa Sabke Ghatvasi
ଅର୍ଥ:Victory, victory, victory to the infinite and imperishable! You dwell in all hearts and shower grace upon everyone.
ଦୁଷ୍ଟ ସକଲ ମୋହିଂ ନିତ ସତାଵୈଂ। ଭ୍ରମତ ରହଉଂ ମୋହିଂ ଚୈନ ନ ଆଵୈ॥
Dusht Sakal Mohi Nit Satavain Bhramat Rahau Mohi Chain Na Aavai
ଅର୍ଥ:Wicked people torment me constantly. I wander restlessly with no peace.
ତ୍ରାହି ତ୍ରାହି ମୈଂ ନାଥ ପୁକାରୋ। ଯହି ଅଵସର ମୋହିଂ ଆନ ଉବାରୋ॥
Trahi Trahi Main Naath Pukaro Yahi Avasar Mohi Aan Ubaro
ଅର୍ଥ:I cry out — save me, save me, O Lord! At this moment, come and rescue me.
ଲୈ ତ୍ରିଶୂଲ ଶତ୍ରୁନ କୋ ମାରୋ। ସଂକଟ ସେ ମୋହିଂ ଆନ ଉବାରୋ॥
Lai Trishul Shatrun Ko Maro Sankat Se Mohi Aan Ubaro
ଅର୍ଥ:Take up your trident and destroy my enemies. Rescue me from this crisis.
ମାତ ପିତା ଭ୍ରାତା ସବ କୋଈ। ସଂକଟ ମେଂ ପୂଛତ ନହିଂ କୋଈ॥
Maat Pita Bhrata Sab Koi Sankat Mein Poochhat Nahin Koi
ଅର୍ଥ:Mother, father, brothers — everyone — in times of trouble, no one asks about me.
ସ୍ଵାମୀ ଏକ ହୈ ଆସ ତୁମ୍ହାରୀ। ଆଯ ହରହୁ ଅବ ସଂକଟ ଭାରୀ॥
Swami Ek Hai Aas Tumhari Aay Harahu Ab Sankat Bhari
ଅର୍ଥ:O Lord, my only hope is in you. Come now and remove this great difficulty.
ଧାମ ତୁମ୍ହାରୋ କୈଲାଶ ହୈ ଭାରୀ। ସବ ଜଗ ଜାନତ ସୁନ୍ଦର ନ୍ଯାରୀ॥

ଅର୍ଥ:Your abode is the mighty Kailash. The whole world knows its incomparable beauty.
ନନ୍ଦୀ ଭୃଂଗୀ ସଦା ସୋହାରୀ। କରତ ଭଜନ ବ୍ରହ୍ମ ସୁକୁମାରୀ॥
Nandi Bhringi Sada Sohari Karat Bhajan Brahm Sukumari
ଅର୍ଥ:Nandi and Bhringi are always delighted there. Brahma and other gods perform worship.
କଂଚନ କୁଣ୍ଡଲ କର୍ଣନ ଶୋଭେ। ଦେଵତା ଦର୍ଶନ କୋ ଅତି ଲୋଭେ॥

ଅର୍ଥ:Golden earrings adorn your ears beautifully. The gods are eager to behold you.
ପ୍ରସନ୍ନ ଚିତ ହୋଇ ଶମ୍ଭୁ ଶୂଲା। ବାଂଟ ଦେ ସବକୋ ଅମର ଫଲା॥
Prasanna Chit Hoi Shambhu Shoola Bant De Sabko Amar Phala
ଅର୍ଥ:When Lord Shambhu is pleased in his heart, he distributes the immortal fruit to all.
ନାଗପାଶ ଲପେଟ ଶରୀରା। ଐସେ ଶୋଭିତ ତ୍ରିପୁରାରୀ ଵୀରା॥
Nagpash Lapet Sharira Aise Shobhit Tripurari Veera
ଅର୍ଥ:Serpents are wrapped around your body. Thus adorned, O brave Tripurari, you shine.
କରତ ସଦା ଶତ୍ରୁନ କ୍ଷଯକାରୀ। ଦେଵତାଓଂ କେ ସଦା ସୁଖକାରୀ॥
Karat Sada Shatrun Kshayakari Devtaon Ke Sada Sukhkari
ଅର୍ଥ:You always destroy enemies. You always bring happiness to the gods.
ଶିଵ ଚାଲୀସା ଜୋ କୋଈ ଗାଵେ। ସବ ସୁଖ ସମ୍ପତ୍ତି ଘର ଆଵେ॥

ଅର୍ଥ:Whoever sings this Shiv Chalisa, all happiness and prosperity comes to their home.
କାଶୀ ମେଂ ଵିରାଜତ ଶମ୍ଭୁ ଶଂକର। ଆରତୀ ହୋତ ସଦା ଜଯ କର॥
Kashi Mein Virajat Shambhu Shankar Aarti Hot Sada Jai Kar
ଅର୍ଥ:In Kashi, Lord Shambhu Shankar resides. His aarti is performed with triumphant celebration always.
ଵିଶ୍ଵନାଥ ଦରବାର ହୈ ଭାରୀ। ଜହାଂ ବସତ ତୀନୋଂ ତ୍ରିପୁରାରୀ॥

ଅର୍ଥ:The court of Vishwanath is magnificent. There the Lord of the three worlds dwells.

Dashrath Ek Achambho Dekha Shambhu Vivah Manohar Pekha
ଅର୍ଥ:Dashrath witnessed a wondrous sight — the beautiful and enchanting wedding of Lord Shambhu.
ସୁନ୍ଦରଦାସ ଜ୍ଞାନ ନହିଂ ପାଯୋ। ଶିଵ ଚାଲୀସା ଅଲ୍ପ ବନାଯୋ॥
Sundardas Gyan Nahin Payo Shiv Chalisa Alp Banayo
ଅର୍ଥ:Sundardas says he has not attained full knowledge, and has composed this humble Shiv Chalisa.
ଜୋ ଯହ ପଢ़େ ମହେଶ୍ଵର ପୂଜା। ଉସକୀ କଠିନ କଭୀ ନହିଂ ଦୂଜା॥
Jo Yah Padhe Maheshwar Pooja Uski Kathin Kabhi Nahin Dooja
ଅର୍ଥ:Whoever reads this worship of Maheshwar, no difficulty can ever touch them.

Sit before a Shiva Lingam or image. Light a diya with ghee. Offer bilva leaves and water. Chant 11 times on Mondays for regular practice. During Shravan month (July-August), daily recitation is especially powerful. The Shiv Chalisa can be followed by chanting 'Om Namah Shivaya' 108 times for deeper devotion.
