Origin & Story

Durga Saptashati Chapter 12 · Maharshi Markandeya (traditionally ascribed) · Puranic period (c. 5th–6th century CE for the Devi Mahatmya)

The Devi Mahatmya (Durga Saptashati or Chandi), part of the Markandeya Purana, narrates the Divine Mother's three great cycles of victory — over Madhu-Kaitabha, over Mahishasura, and over Shumbha-Nishumbha. In Chapter 12, after the Narayani Stuti, the Goddess herself speaks the phalashruti, declaring the blessings that flow to those who recite and hear her Mahatmya. She promises to quell every calamity for her devotees, names the sacred lunar days for its recitation, and assures freedom from sin, poverty, loss and every fear — proclaiming her own glory to be the supreme and great cause of well-being.

As told in scripture

Because these are the Goddess's own words of promise, devotees through the ages have recited the Durga Saptashati in times of war, epidemic and distress, trusting her assurance that no calamity touches those who hear her Mahatmya. Countless families recount being shielded from danger, illness and loss through the faithful recitation of these verses during Navaratri.
