The Mahalingashtakam is a cherished traditional hymn. Eight verses to the Mahalinga — the great cosmic linga of Shiva — adoring Mahadeva, Maheshwara and consort of Uma as the boundless reality worshipped by gods and sages.

ഏതെങ്കിലും വരിയിലോ ▶ ബട്ടണിലോ തൊട്ട് കേൾക്കൂ
മഹാലിങ്ഗം മഹാദേവം മഹേശ്വരമുമാപതിമ് । സാമ്ബം മധ്യാര്ജുനേശം തം ഗുരും ദേവം നതോഽസ്മ്യഹമ് ॥ ൧॥ ജ്യോതിരൂപം കൃഷ്ണരൂപം സര്വരൂപം ജഗത്പതിമ് । ഇഷ്ടാര്ഥസിദ്ധിദം ശമ്ഭും മഹാലിങ്ഗം നതോഽസ്മ്യഹമ് ॥ ൨॥ കാശിക്ഷേത്രസമാനഞ്ച കൈലാസാദധികം പ്രിയമ് । ശാശ്വതസ്ഥിരവാസം ച മഹാലിങ്ഗം നതോഽസ്മ്യഹമ് ॥ ൩॥ ബൃഹദ്കുചാമ്ബാസഹിതം മൂകാമ്ബാ തപസാഫലമ് । ഗണാധ്യക്ഷം ഷണ്മുഖഞ്ച മഹാലിങ്ഗം നതോഽസ്മ്യഹമ് ॥ ൪॥ പ്രദക്ഷിണാദശ്വമേധം നമനാത്വാജപേയകമ് । സ്തോത്രാത്ശ്രീരാജസൂയാഖ്യം സ്മരാണത്മുക്തിദായകമ് ॥ ൫॥ ക്ഷേത്രവാസശ്ച നിര്മുക്ത തീര്ഥസ്നാനൈഃ സദാ ശുചി । പഞ്ചാക്ഷരജപാശ്ചൈവ മഹാലിങ്ഗം പ്രതുഷ്യതി ॥ ൬॥ യഃ പ്രദോഷ മഹാലിങ്ഗം രുദ്രജാപാത്പ്രദോഷയേത് । സ സര്വരോഗനിര്മുക്ത ശതായുസ്സുഖമേതതു ॥ ൭॥ ദര്ശനാത്സര്വപാപഘ്നം നമനാത്വാഞ്ഛിതപ്രദമ് । സ്മരണാന്സര്വസായുജ്യം മഹാലിങ്ഗം നതോഽസ്മ്യഹമ് ॥ ൮॥ മഹാലിങ്ഗാഷ്ടകം സ്തോത്രം കൃതം കഷ്ടൌഘനാശനമ് । മഹാലിങ്ഗപ്രേരിതേന ഗോപാലേന കൃതം ശുഭമ് ॥ ൯॥ ഇതി മഹാലിങ്ഗാഷ്ടകം സമ്പൂര്ണമ് ।
mahāliṅgaṃ mahādevaṃ maheśvaramumāpatim | sāmbaṃ madhyārjuneśaṃ taṃ guruṃ devaṃ nato'smyaham || 1|| jyotirūpaṃ kṛṣṇarūpaṃ sarvarūpaṃ jagatpatim | iṣṭārthasiddhidaṃ śambhuṃ mahāliṅgaṃ nato'smyaham || 2|| kāśikṣetrasamānañca kailāsādadhikaṃ priyam | śāśvatasthiravāsaṃ ca mahāliṅgaṃ nato'smyaham || 3|| bṛhadkucāmbāsahitaṃ mūkāmbā tapasāphalam | gaṇādhyakṣaṃ ṣaṇmukhañca mahāliṅgaṃ nato'smyaham || 4|| pradakṣiṇādaśvamedhaṃ namanātvājapeyakam | stotrātśrīrājasūyākhyaṃ smarāṇatmuktidāyakam || 5|| kṣetravāsaśca nirmukta tīrthasnānaiḥ sadā śuci | pañcākṣarajapāścaiva mahāliṅgaṃ pratuṣyati || 6|| yaḥ pradoṣa mahāliṅgaṃ rudrajāpātpradoṣayet | sa sarvaroganirmukta śatāyussukhametatu || 7|| darśanātsarvapāpaghnaṃ namanātvāñchitapradam | smaraṇānsarvasāyujyaṃ mahāliṅgaṃ nato'smyaham || 8|| mahāliṅgāṣṭakaṃ stotraṃ kṛtaṃ kaṣṭaughanāśanam | mahāliṅgapreritena gopālena kṛtaṃ śubham || 9|| iti mahāliṅgāṣṭakaṃ sampūrṇam |
അർഥം:महालिङ्ग — शिव के महान ब्रह्मांडीय लिङ्ग — की आठ श्लोकों की स्तुति, जो महादेव, महेश्वर व उमापति को देवों व ऋषियों द्वारा पूजित अनंत सत्य रूप में वंदन करती है।
महालिङ्गाष्टकम् പാരായണ ഫലങ്ങൾ
Recitation of the Mahalingashtakam is held to bring the grace, blessings and protection of the Lord.
Cultivates devotion, calms the mind and steadies the heart in the Lord’s remembrance.
Most auspicious on Mondays, and during Maha Shivaratri, Pradosh and the month of Shravan.
A short, melodious hymn that anyone can learn and recite daily with faith.
महालिङ्गाष्टकम् പാരായണ വിധി
Bathe and sit facing east or north before an image of the deity. Light a lamp and recite the Mahalingashtakam slowly and with devotion. It may be chanted daily, or especially during Maha Shivaratri, Pradosh and the month of Shravan. Conclude with a prayer for grace and protection.
