The Pashupati Ashtakam is a much-loved devotional hymn to Shiva as Pashupati, the cosmic Lord of all beings. Its final verse names its composer as Prithvipati, a wise poet (surin). The hymn is structured as an impassioned sermon to humanity: across eight verses it lists Shiva's majesty and mercy and, in its famous second verse, drives home that no earthly relationship can rescue a soul from death — only devotion to the Lord of Girija can.

Traditional accounts hold that this hymn was sung by devotees facing the certainty of death, taking heart from its second verse that when Kala (Time) seizes a person, neither kin nor kingdom can save them — only Pashupati. Sincere reciters are said to have lost all fear of death and, as the phala-shruti promises, attained residence in Shivaloka.

അർഥം:हे मनुष्यो! उन गिरिजापति (शिव) का भजन करो — जो पशुपति, चन्द्रपति, धरणीपति, नागलोकपति और सतीपति हैं, जो चरणों में प्रणाम करने वाले भक्तों की पीड़ा हरने वाले परम प्रभु हैं।
ന ജനകോ ജനനീ ന ച സോദരോ ന തനയോ ന ച ഭൂരിബലം കുലമ്। അവതി കോഽപി ന കാലവശം ഗതം ഭജത രേ മനുജാ ഗിരിജാപതിമ്॥൨॥

അർഥം:हे मनुष्यो! उन गिरिजापति का भजन करो — क्योंकि जब मनुष्य काल के वश में हो जाता है, तब न पिता, न माता, न भाई, न पुत्र, और न ही विशाल बलशाली कुल उसकी रक्षा कर सकता है; केवल वे ही रक्षा करते हैं।
മുരജഡിണ്ഡിമവാദ്യവിലക്ഷണം മധുരപഞ്ചമനാദവിശാരദമ്। പ്രമഥഭൂതഗണൈരപി സേവിതം ഭജത രേ മനുജാ ഗിരിജാപതിമ്॥൩॥

അർഥം:हे मनुष्यो! उन गिरिजापति का भजन करो — जो मुरज, डिण्डिम आदि वाद्यों से विलक्षण हैं, मधुर पञ्चम स्वर के विशारद हैं, और प्रमथ-भूतगणों द्वारा भी सेवित हैं।
ശരണദം സുഖദം ശരണാന്വിതം ശിവശിവേതി ശിവേതി നതം നൃണാമ്। അഭയദം കരുണാവരുണാലയം ഭജത രേ മനുജാ ഗിരിജാപതിമ്॥൪॥

അർഥം:हे मनुष्यो! उन गिरिजापति का भजन करो — जो नरमुण्डों से बने मणिकुण्डल धारण करते हैं, सर्पों के हार से प्रसन्न हैं, वृषभध्वज हैं, और जिनका शरीर चिता-भस्म से धवल है।
മഖവിനാശകരം ശശിശേഖരം സതതമധ്വരഭാജിഫലപ്രദമ്। പ്രലയദഗ്ധസുരാസുരമാനവം ഭജത രേ മനുജാ ഗിരിജാപതിമ്॥൬॥

അർഥം:हे मनुष्यो! उन गिरिजापति का भजन करो — जो (दक्ष के) यज्ञ का विनाश करने वाले, चन्द्रशेखर हैं, यज्ञ करने वालों को सदा फल देने वाले हैं, और प्रलय में देव, असुर और मनुष्यों को भस्म करने वाले हैं।

അർഥം:हे मनुष्यो! उन गिरिजापति का भजन करो — जो अहंकार त्याग देने पर चिरकाल तक हृदय में निवास करते हैं; देखो, यह संसार जन्म-मरण-जरा के भय से पीड़ित और निकट आते भयों से व्याकुल है!
ഹരിവിരഞ്ചിസുരാധിപപൂജിതം യമജനേശധനേശനമസ്കൃതമ്। ത്രിനയനം ഭുവനത്രിതയാധിപം ഭജത രേ മനുജാ ഗിരിജാപതിമ്॥൮॥

അർഥം:हे मनुष्यो! उन गिरिजापति का भजन करो — जो विष्णु, ब्रह्मा और देवराज इन्द्र से पूजित, यम, इन्द्र और कुबेर से नमस्कृत, त्रिनेत्रधारी और तीनों लोकों के अधिपति हैं।
പശുപതേരിദമഷ്ടകമദ്ഭുതം വിരചിതം പൃഥിവീപതിസൂരിണാ। പഠതി സംശൃണുതേ മനുജഃ സദാ ശിവപുരീം വസതേ ലഭതേ മുദമ്॥൯॥

അർഥം:पृथ्वीपति नामक विद्वान् द्वारा रचित पशुपति के इस अद्भुत अष्टक को जो मनुष्य सदा पढ़ता या सुनता है, वह शिवपुरी में निवास करता है और परम आनन्द प्राप्त करता है।

Cultivates dispassion (vairagya) by reflecting on the fleeting nature of family, wealth and life
Brings the grace of the compassionate ocean-of-mercy form of Shiva
The phala-shruti promises dwelling in Shivapuri (Shiva's abode) and lasting inner joy for the reciter or listener
पशुपत्यष्टकम् പാരായണ വിധി
Sit facing east or north before an image or Lingam of Shiva. Recite all eight verses with feeling, letting the refrain 'Bhajata Re Manuja Girijapatim' build a steady devotional rhythm, then conclude with the ninth phala-shruti verse. Reflect on the second verse's teaching that no worldly relation can save the soul — only Shiva. It may be chanted once, or 8 times on special Shiva days. Listening with attention is said to grant the same fruit as reciting.
