Kirtana of Bhadrachala Ramadasa, popularly in raga Ananda Bhairavi, Adi tala (Telugu, 17th century CE) · Bhadrachala Ramadasa (Kancherla Gopanna) · c. 1620-1688 CE
Gopanna the tahsildar built Rama a temple at Bhadrachalam with six lakh varahas of tax money, and the Sultan cast him into the Golconda fortress. Through twelve years of chains, the saint kept singing to the deity he had enthroned. In this kirtana his ache turns playful and piercing at once: the Lord's speech, once so freely given to squirrels and stones, has now become 'gold' — too precious, it seems, for his own Ramadasa.
✦ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಿದಂತೆ
The story goes that after years of this pleading, two radiant youths — Ramoji and Lakshmoji — appeared before Sultan Tanisha by night, paid the six lakh varahas in coins bearing Rama's seal, obtained the release warrant, and vanished. Waking, the Sultan realised who his creditors had been and freed the saint with honour. The Lord whose word had 'turned to gold' answered, in the end, with gold of his own.

ಅರ್ಥ:क्या तुम्हारे बोल सोना हो गए हैं, हे कोदंडपाणि (धनुर्धारी राम)? क्या तुम्हारी वाणी इतनी क़ीमती हो गई कि मुझ पर एक शब्द भी खर्च नहीं करते?
ಪಲುಕೇ ಬಙ್ಗಾರಮಾಯೆ ಪಿಲಚಿನಾ ಪಲುಕವೇಮಿ ಕಲಲೋ ನೀ ನಾಮಸ್ಮರಣ ಮರುವ ಚಕ್ಕನಿ ತಣ್ಡ್ರೀ ॥ ಪಲುಕೇ ಬಙ್ಗಾರಮಾಯೆನಾ ॥

ಅರ್ಥ:सचमुच तुम्हारे बोल सोना हो गए — पुकारने पर भी क्यों नहीं बोलते? स्वप्न में भी मैं तुम्हारा नाम-स्मरण नहीं भूलता, मेरे भले पिता।
ಎನ್ತ ವೇಡಿನಗಾನಿ ಸುನ್ತೈನ ದಯರಾದು ಪನ್ತಮು ಸೇಯ ನೇನೆನ್ತಟಿವಾಡನು ತಣ್ಡ್ರೀ ॥ ಪಲುಕೇ ಬಙ್ಗಾರಮಾಯೆನಾ ॥

ಅರ್ಥ:कितना भी गिड़गिड़ाऊँ, तनिक भी दया नहीं आती। पर तुमसे हठ करनेवाला मैं होता ही कौन हूँ, पिता?
ಶರಣಾಗತತ್ರಾಣ ಬಿರುದಾಙ್ಕಿತುಡವುಕಾದಾ ಕರುಣಿಞ್ಚು ಭದ್ರಾಚಲ ವರರಾಮದಾಸ ಪೋಷ ॥ ಪಲುಕೇ ಬಙ್ಗಾರಮಾಯೆನಾ ॥
śaraṇāgatatrāṇa birudāṅkituḍavukādā karuṇiñcu bhadrācala vararāmadāsa pōṣa ॥ palukē baṅgāramāyenā ॥
ಅರ್ಥ:क्या तुम 'शरणागतत्राण' — शरण में आए हुओं के रक्षक — की उपाधि धारण नहीं करते? करुणा करो, हे भद्राचल के स्वामी, अपने रामदास के पालक!
ಇರವುಗ ಇಸುಕಲೋನ ಪೊರಲಿನ ಉಡುತ ಭಕ್ತಿಕಿ ಕರುಣಿಞ್ಚಿ ಬ್ರೋಚಿತಿವನಿ ನೆರ ನಮ್ಮಿತಿನಿ ತಣ್ಡ್ರೀ ॥ ಪಲುಕೇ ಬಙ್ಗಾರಮಾಯೆನಾ ॥
iravuga isukalōna poralina uḍuta bhaktiki karuṇiñci brōcitivani nera nammitini taṇḍrī ॥ palukē baṅgāramāyenā ॥
ಅರ್ಥ:जब नन्ही गिलहरी (तुम्हारे सेतु के लिए) भक्ति से बालू में लोटती रही, तो तुमने द्रवित होकर उसकी रक्षा की — यही जानकर मैंने तुम पर पूरा भरोसा किया, पिता।
ರಾತಿ ನಾತಿಗ ಚೇಸಿ ಭೂತಲಮುನ ಪ್ರಖ್ಯಾತಿ ಚೆನ್ದಿತಿವನಿ ಪ್ರೀತಿತೋ ನಮ್ಮಿತಿ ತಣ್ಡ್ರೀ ॥ ಪಲುಕೇ ಬಙ್ಗಾರಮಾಯೆನಾ ॥
rāti nātiga cēsi bhūtalamuna prakhyāti cenditivani prītitō nammiti taṇḍrī ॥ palukē baṅgāramāyenā ॥
ಅರ್ಥ:तुमने पत्थर को नारी (अहल्या) बना दिया और सारी धरती पर ख्याति पाई — प्रीति से मैंने उसी पर विश्वास रखा, पिता।

ಅರ್ಥ:तुम्हारे बोल सोना हो गए — पुकारने पर क्यों नहीं बोलते? स्वप्न में भी तुम्हारा नाम नहीं भूलता, भले पिता। क्या तुम्हारे बोल सोना हो गए, हे कोदंडपाणि?

Sing softly, as a child complaining to a beloved father — 'palukey bangaramayena?' ('has your word turned to gold?'). Let each charanam alternate reproach and remembered mercy, and return to the refrain with more surrender each time. Traditionally rendered in raga Ananda Bhairavi, Adi tala.
