Origin & Story
Durga Saptashati (Devi Mahatmyam) Chapter 11 — Narayani Stuti, verses 28, 11, 9; from the Markandeya Purana · Sage Markandeya (traditional) · Ancient (the Devi Mahatmyam is dated to c. 5th-6th century CE)
When the Goddess had slain Shumbha and freed the three worlds, Indra and the gods sang the Narayani Stuti in gratitude. Amid its praises they declared that, pleased, she takes away every disease, and that those who take refuge in her know no calamity. These lines — together with the great refrains 'Sharanagata-dinarta-paritrana-parayane' and 'Sarva-mangala-mangalye' — became among the most recited prayers to the Mother for health, refuge and auspiciousness.
✦ As told in scripture
Across generations, families have recited 'Rogan-asheshan apahamsi tushta' at the bedside of the sick, trusting the Goddess's own word that a pleased Mother removes all illness. Many testify that combined with sincere surrender and the Narayani Stuti during Navaratri, this verse brings comfort, recovery and renewed strength where medicine alone seemed to fall short.
