The Vinayagar Agaval is treasured as the work of the saint-poetess Avvaiyar, a supreme devotee of Lord Ganesha. Tradition tells that Ganesha graced her directly, and the hymn flows as her own experience — beginning as praise of His sacred form and rising into the description of inner yogic awakening. It is recited across Tamil Nadu as a beloved prayer to Pillaiyar, the remover of obstacles, and as a map of the soul's ascent under His grace.
✦ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಿದಂತೆ
It is told that Avvaiyar, weary and aged, was once gently tested and then blessed by Lord Ganesha (in the tale of the naaval fruit), and that by His grace the deep truths of yoga were opened to her — truths she poured into the Vinayagar Agaval, so that this single hymn became both a prayer and a living guide to liberation.

ಅರ್ಥ:विநாயकर் अकवल् कवयित्री संत अव्वैयार द्वारा भगवान गणेश (विநायक) की स्तुति में रचित महान तमिल स्तोत्र है, जो प्रवाहमय 'अकवल्' (मुक्त छंद) में है। यह प्रभु की चरणों से ऊपर की ओर स्तुति से आरंभ होता है: उनके शीतल, चन्दन-लिप्त कमल-लाल चरण जिनके नूपुर अनेक रागों में गूँजते हैं; स्वर्ण कटिसूत्र और रेशमी वस्त्र; पेटिका-समान उदर और एकमात्र विशाल दन्त; सिंदूर से दीप्त गजमुख; अंकुश और पाश धारण करते पाँच हाथ; भक्त के हृदय में निवास करता श्याम रूप; आठ भुजाएँ, तीन नेत्र और मद की रेखाएँ; दो कान, चमकता स्वर्णमुकुट, और त्रिसूत्रधारी यज्ञोपवीत से शोभित विशाल वक्ष।

ಅರ್ಥ:फिर कवयित्री उन्हें समस्त शब्दों से परे परम तुरीय ज्ञान का अद्भुत स्वरूप कहती हैं — वह कल्पतरु-समान दिव्य गज, मूषकवाहन, जो तीन फलों का रसास्वादन करते हैं। वे प्रार्थना करती हैं: इसी क्षण मुझे अपनाने की इच्छा से, माता की भाँति वे स्वयं कृपा कर मेरे पास आए, मायामय जन्म के मोह को काटा, और पूर्ण पंचाक्षर (पाँच पवित्र अक्षर) स्पष्ट रूप से प्रकट किया। मेरे हृदय में प्रवेश कर, गुरु का रूप धारण कर, उन्होंने इस धरा पर अपने पावन चरण रखे, 'यही सत्य है' सिखाया, मुझे अक्षय आनंद से हर्षित किया, और अपने दन्त-रूपी आयुध से मेरे क्रूर कर्म को उखाड़ फेंका। आगे यह स्तोत्र कुण्डलिनी-जागरण और उस आंतरिक योग-अनुभव का वर्णन करता है जो गणेश प्रदान करते हैं।

விநாயகர் அகவல் ಪಾರಾಯಣ ವಿಧಿ
Bathe and sit before an image of Lord Ganesha. Light a lamp, offer flowers and (if possible) modaka or the three fruits. Recite the Agaval slowly in its flowing cadence, visualising the form of the Lord from His feet upward as the verses describe, and dwelling on the inner meaning of surrender to the Guru. Begin, as is customary, with a salutation to Ganesha; it may be recited before commencing any auspicious work or spiritual study.
