ಮೂಲ & ಕಥೆ

Ramcharitmanas, Bala Kanda (Goswami Tulsidas) · Goswami Tulsidas · 16th century CE (c. 1574)

In the Bala Kanda of the Ramcharitmanas, Tulsidas narrates the birth of Lord Rama to King Dasharatha and Queen Kausalya in Ayodhya. The Lord first reveals Himself to Kausalya in His resplendent four-armed divine form, and she, overwhelmed, offers this hymn of praise acknowledging Him as the supreme Brahman beyond Maya and measure. Moved by her love and wishing to enjoy the sports of human childhood, Rama smiles, consoles her with a sweet account, and takes the form of a crying infant so that His mother may cherish Him with maternal affection.

ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಿದಂತೆ

Tulsidas records that within each pore of the Lord's body lie countless universes — yet out of love for His devotee Kausalya, that same infinite Being became her tiny infant; tradition holds that singing this stuti on Rama Navami fills the home with the very auspiciousness of Rama's birth and grants devotees the boon of beholding the Lord as their own.

ಅರ್ಥ:The compassionate Lord, merciful to the meek and benefactor of Kausalya, became manifest. The mother was overjoyed, and pondering His wondrous form that steals the minds of sages, she beheld Him — delightful to the eyes, His body dark as a rain-cloud, bearing His weapons in four arms, adorned with ornaments and a forest-garland, with large eyes, that ocean of beauty, the slayer of Khara.

ಅರ್ಥ:With joined palms she said, 'O Infinite One, in what way can I sing Your praise? The Vedas and Puranas declare You beyond Maya, beyond the gunas, beyond knowledge, and immeasurable. That very Lord Sri-kanta — whom the scriptures and saints hail as the ocean of mercy and bliss and the abode of all virtues — has, for my sake and out of love for His devotees, become manifest.

ಅರ್ಥ:"The Vedas say that countless universes fashioned by Maya lie in each pore of Your body; that such a One should dwell within my womb seems a jest — hearing it, even the steadfast cannot keep their minds firm." When this knowledge arose in her, the Lord smiled, for He wished to enact many a sport (lila). So He told her a charming tale and consoled the mother in a way that she might receive (and treat Him with) a mother's love for her son.

It is the Rama Janma Stuti — the hymn describing the birth/appearance of Lord Rama — from the Bala Kanda of Goswami Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas. Mother Kausalya beholds the Lord's divine four-armed form and sings His praises.
It is sung above all on Rama Navami and during Rama Janmotsav celebrations, especially at midday when Rama is traditionally said to have been born. Many devotees also recite it during daily Rama worship.
Tulsidas describes Rama first manifesting in His divine four-armed (Vishnu/Narayana) form bearing weapons, to reveal His supreme nature; He then smiles and, at Kausalya's prayer, assumes the lovable form of an ordinary newborn so the mother can love Him as her child.
She marvels that the infinite Lord — within each pore of whose body the Vedas say countless universes reside — has chosen to dwell in her womb and become her son, an idea so vast that even the steadfast cannot grasp it.
