Meaning

The Dattatreya Stotram, beginning 'Jatadharam Pandurangam', is a celebrated hymn proclaimed by the sage Narada in praise of Lord Dattatreya — the avadhuta guru who embodies the Trimurti of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Its concise verses, each ending 'Dattatreya Namostu Te', salute him as the creator-sustainer-destroyer, the remover of all diseases, and the supreme Brahman beyond form. It is among the most popular daily prayers of Datta devotees, especially on Datta Jayanti and Thursdays.

Lord Dattatreya was born to the great sage Atri and his pativrata wife Anasuya as the union of the three supreme gods — Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva — who came to test and then bless her devotion. He grew into the ideal avadhuta and Adi Guru, wandering naked and free, begging his food, established in the bliss of Brahman. This stotra, sung by the celestial sage Narada by the grace of Datta himself, gathers his glories — his ash-smeared ascetic form with trident and begging bowl, his identity as the Trimurti, and his power to heal disease and grant liberation — and closes by declaring that it bestows the very vision of the Lord.

Lord Dattatreya is praised as 'Sarva-roga-hara', the remover of all diseases, and the Datta tradition abounds with accounts — gathered in texts such as the Guru Charitra — of the chronically ill, the possessed and the despairing being cured and uplifted at his shrines. The closing verse itself promises that this divine hymn is 'Datta-pratyaksha-karaka' — it brings about the direct, living vision of Dattatreya for the sincere devotee.

जटाधरं पाण्डुराङ्गं शूलहस्तं कृपानिधिम्। सर्वरोगहरं देवं दत्तात्रेयमहं भजे॥

Jataadharam Paanduraangam Shoola-hastam Kripaa-nidhim Sarva-roga-haram Devam Dattaatreyam-aham Bhaje

Meaning:I worship Lord Dattatreya — bearer of matted locks, of fair body smeared with ash, holding a trident, the treasure-house of compassion, the divine remover of all diseases.

जगदुत्पत्तिकर्त्रे स्थितिसंहारहेतवे। भवपाशविमुक्ताय दत्तात्रेय नमोऽस्तु ते॥१॥

Jagad-utpatti-kartre Cha Sthiti-samhaara-hetave Bhava-paasha-vimuktaaya Dattaatreya Namo'stu Te (1)

Meaning:To the creator of the universe, the cause of its sustenance and dissolution, the liberator from the bonds of worldly existence — O Dattatreya, salutations to you.

जराजन्मविनाशाय देहशुद्धिकराय च। दिगम्बरदयामूर्ते दत्तात्रेय नमोऽस्तु ते॥२॥

कर्पूरकान्तिदेहाय ब्रह्ममूर्तिधराय च। वेदशास्त्रपरिज्ञाय दत्तात्रेय नमोऽस्तु ते॥३॥

Karpoora-kaanti-dehaaya Brahma-moorti-dharaaya Cha Veda-shaastra-parijnaaya Dattaatreya Namo'stu Te (3)

Meaning:To him whose body shines like camphor, who bears the form of Brahman, the knower of all the Vedas and scriptures — O Dattatreya, salutations to you.

ह्रस्वदीर्घकृशस्थूल-नामगोत्र-विवर्जित। पञ्चभूतैकदीप्ताय दत्तात्रेय नमोऽस्तु ते॥४॥

Hrasva-deergha-krisha-sthoola-naama-gotra-vivarjita Pancha-bhootaika-deeptaaya Dattaatreya Namo'stu Te (4)

Meaning:O you who are beyond short and long, lean and stout, beyond name and lineage, who shine as the one light within the five elements — O Dattatreya, salutations to you.

यज्ञभोक्ते यज्ञाय यज्ञरूपधराय च। यज्ञप्रियाय सिद्धाय दत्तात्रेय नमोऽस्तु ते॥५॥

Yajna-bhokte Cha Yajnaaya Yajna-roopa-dharaaya Cha Yajna-priyaaya Siddhaaya Dattaatreya Namo'stu Te (5)

Meaning:To him who is the enjoyer of sacrifice, the sacrifice itself, who assumes the form of sacrifice, the beloved of sacrifice, the perfected one — O Dattatreya, salutations to you.

आदौ ब्रह्मा मध्ये विष्णुरन्ते देवः सदाशिवः। मूर्तित्रयस्वरूपाय दत्तात्रेय नमोऽस्तु ते॥६॥

भोगालयाय भोगाय योगयोग्याय धारिणे। जितेन्द्रियजितज्ञाय दत्तात्रेय नमोऽस्तु ते॥७॥

Meaning:To the abode of enjoyment and the enjoyment itself, the one worthy of yoga who sustains all, the conqueror of the senses and of knowing — O Dattatreya, salutations to you.

दिगम्बराय दिव्याय दिव्यरूपधराय च। सदोदितपरब्रह्म दत्तात्रेय नमोऽस्तु ते॥८॥

Meaning:To the sky-clad, the divine, who assumes a divine form, the ever-arisen Supreme Brahman — O Dattatreya, salutations to you.

जम्बूद्वीपमहाक्षेत्रमातापुरनिवासिने। जयमानसतां देव दत्तात्रेय नमोऽस्तु ते॥९॥

Meaning:To him who dwells in the great holy field of Jambudvipa at Matapura (Mahur), O God who conquers the minds (of devotees) — O Dattatreya, salutations to you.

भिक्षाटनं गृहे ग्रामे पात्रं हेममयं करे। नानास्वादमयी भिक्षा दत्तात्रेय नमोऽस्तु ते॥१०॥

Meaning:Who goes begging from house to house in the village with a golden bowl in hand, whose alms are of many flavours — O Dattatreya, salutations to you.

ब्रह्मज्ञानमयी मुद्रा वस्त्रे चाकाशभूतले। प्रज्ञानघनबोधाय दत्तात्रेय नमोऽस्तु ते॥११॥

Brahma-jnaana-mayee Mudraa Vastre Cha-aakaasha-bhootale Prajnaana-ghana-bodhaaya Dattaatreya Namo'stu Te (11)

Meaning:Whose hand shows the seal of knowledge of Brahman, whose garment is the sky and whose seat is the earth, who is dense, awakened consciousness — O Dattatreya, salutations to you.

अवधूतसदानन्दपरब्रह्मस्वरूपिणे। विदेहदेहरूपाय दत्तात्रेय नमोऽस्तु ते॥१२॥

Meaning:To the avadhuta of the nature of ever-blissful Supreme Brahman, embodied yet bodiless (videha) — O Dattatreya, salutations to you.

सत्यरूपसदाचारसत्यधर्मपरायण। सत्याश्रयपरोक्षाय दत्तात्रेय नमोऽस्तु ते॥१३॥

Satya-roopa-sadaachaara-satya-dharma-paraayana Satyaashraya-parokshaaya Dattaatreya Namo'stu Te (13)

Meaning:O you who are of the form of truth, of righteous conduct, devoted to the true Dharma, the refuge of truth and beyond perception — O Dattatreya, salutations to you.

शूलहस्तगदापाणे वनमालासुकन्धर। यज्ञसूत्रधरब्रह्मन् दत्तात्रेय नमोऽस्तु ते॥१४॥

Shoola-hasta-gadaa-paane Vana-maalaa-su-kandhara Yajna-sootra-dhara-brahman Dattaatreya Namo'stu Te (14)

Meaning:O you who hold the trident and the mace in your hands, with the forest-garland gracing your neck, the Brahman who wears the sacred thread — O Dattatreya, salutations to you.

क्षराक्षरस्वरूपाय परात्परतराय च। दत्तमुक्तिपरस्तोत्र दत्तात्रेय नमोऽस्तु ते॥१५॥

Meaning:To him who is of the form of the perishable and the imperishable, and is higher than the highest, O hymn that grants the supreme liberation bestowed (datta) — O Dattatreya, salutations to you.

दत्त विद्याढ्यलक्ष्मीश दत्त स्वात्मस्वरूपिणे। गुणनिर्गुणरूपाय दत्तात्रेय नमोऽस्तु ते॥१६॥

Sit facing east before an image of Lord Dattatreya, ideally after a bath. Light a lamp and incense. Begin with the dhyana verse 'Jatadharam Pandurangam', then recite the eighteen verses with devotion, sounding the refrain 'Dattatreya Namostu Te' at the close of each. Recitation on Thursdays and especially on Datta Jayanti is held to be most fruitful; many devotees recite it daily as a guru-prayer for health, protection and spiritual guidance.
