Meaning

The Hanuman Vadvanal Stotra is a fierce, protective Tantric hymn to Lord Hanuman, traditionally composed by Vibhishana, the righteous brother of Ravana. Its name 'Vadvanala' likens Hanuman's power to the submarine fire that burns within the ocean, consuming all evil. Composed in commanding mantric prose with potent bija-syllables, it invokes Hanuman to cut away every fever and disease, expel ghosts, spirits and malefic planets, neutralise black magic and poison, and protect the devotee from all calamity, poverty and danger.

Origin & Story

Hanumad Vadvanala Stotra — a Tantric protective hymn from the Hanuman devotional tradition · Traditionally ascribed to Vibhishana (the viniyoga names Sri Ramachandra as the rishi) · Classical / medieval Tantric tradition, rooted in the Ramayana legend

According to tradition, this hymn was composed by Vibhishana, Ravana's brother and a great devotee of Rama. Having seen Hanuman set Lanka ablaze with his burning tail and crush the rakshasa army, Vibhishana was awestruck by the monkey-hero's power and praised him as 'Vadvanala' — the submarine fire that devours all. The stotra is cast in the form of a fierce protective mantra: rather than only describing Hanuman's deeds (burning Lanka, bridging the ocean, severing Ravana's heads, comforting Sita), it directly commands the removal of fevers, spirits, malefic planets and every danger, making it one of the most potent Hanuman kavacha-style prayers for protection and healing.

As told in scripture

Devotees afflicted by relentless fevers, mysterious illnesses or the torment of black magic and evil spirits have long turned to this stotra, and tradition holds that reciting it daily for forty-one days has freed many from sufferings that no other remedy could touch. It is told that wherever this hymn is chanted with faith, Hanuman stands as a wall of fire around the home, so that no spirit, curse or malefic planet may cross to harm the devotee.

How to Chant Hanuman Vadvanal Stotra

Repetitions1times
Best TimeTuesdays and Saturdays (sacred to Hanuman), or early morning after a bath; the traditional practice is to recite it daily for 41 days

This is a fierce protective Tantric stotra, so it should be approached with cleanliness, faith and steadiness rather than casually. Bathe, sit before an image of Hanuman, and light a lamp of sesame oil; offering sindoor (vermilion) and a garland is auspicious. Begin with the viniyoga, then recite the hymn aloud with firm resolve, pronouncing the bija-mantras (Om Hraam Hreem... Hum Phat Svaha) carefully. Many practitioners recite it once daily, unbroken, for 41 days to overcome a specific affliction, illness or persistent trouble. Conclude by praying for protection and offering gratitude to Hanuman.

Frequently Asked Questions

'Vadavanala' (or Vadvanal) is the mythological submarine fire — a mare-headed fire that burns unceasingly beneath the ocean. The hymn compares Hanuman's tremendous, all-consuming power to this fire, implying that he can burn away every disease, evil spirit and danger just as the Vadavanala consumes the waters.
Tradition attributes it to Vibhishana, the righteous younger brother of Ravana who became a devotee of Rama. Having witnessed Hanuman's overwhelming strength during the burning of Lanka and the war, Vibhishana is said to have composed this protective hymn in his praise; the closing line reads 'iti Vibhishana-kritam'.
It is a protective and healing hymn invoked against troubles of every kind — stubborn fevers and chronic illness, black magic and the evil eye, ghosts and spirits, malefic planetary periods (graha dosha), poison, and general calamity, poverty and fear. It calls on Hanuman to cut, expel and burn away these afflictions and to shield the devotee.
Because it is a fierce mantra-stotra with bija-syllables, it is best chanted with cleanliness, devotion and concentration, ideally on Tuesdays or Saturdays. A common practice is to recite it once daily without a break for 41 days when seeking relief from a particular illness or danger, while maintaining faith in Hanuman's protection.
