Traditional North Indian devotional aarti (Aarti Sangrah), sung with the Satyanarayan Vrat Katha from the Skanda Purana (Reva Khanda) · Traditional (the closing line names Swami Shivananda) · Medieval to modern

The worship of Satyanarayan and its accompanying Katha are described in the Reva Khanda of the Skanda Purana, where Lord Vishnu, in answer to Narada's compassion for suffering humanity, prescribes this simple vrat for the fulfilment of wishes in the Kali age. This aarti, sung at the close of the Katha, recounts the Lord's appearances to the poor brahmin, the Bhil woodcutter, King Chandrachuda and the merchant, and is performed in countless Hindu homes on full-moon days and joyous occasions.

ଶାସ୍ତ୍ରରେ କୁହାଯାଇଥିବା ପରି

The Katha tells that a wealthy merchant who vowed to perform the Satyanarayan Puja forgot his promise after his wishes were granted, and so was struck by ruin and false imprisonment; only when he and his family resumed the worship with full faith was his fortune, his ships and his family restored, demonstrating the fruit of honouring one's vow to the Lord of Truth.

Satyanarayan is a form of Lord Vishnu (Narayana) as the personification of Truth ('satya'). He is worshipped through the Satyanarayan Vrat and Katha, a household ritual performed for fulfilment of wishes, prosperity, and thanksgiving on auspicious occasions.
It is sung at the very end of the Satyanarayan Puja and Katha, most commonly on Purnima (full-moon days), Ekadashi, and on special occasions such as housewarmings, weddings, and the fulfilment of a wish or vow.
Its verses recall episodes from the Satyanarayan Katha — the poor brahmin who became prosperous, the humble Bhil woodcutter who was blessed, and especially the wealthy merchant who suffered misfortune for neglecting his vow and regained grace only when he resumed the worship with faith.
Its central message is the power of truth and faith (satya and shraddha). The Katha repeatedly shows that those who honour their vows and worship with sincere devotion prosper, while those who break their word face hardship until they return to faith.
