Soundarya Lahari, Verse 8 · Adi Shankaracharya · c. 8th century CE

Belonging to the Ananda Lahari, this verse is one of the principal dhyana (meditation) stanzas of the hymn, describing the Mother's abode of Manidvipa in the ocean of nectar. Its imagery closely follows the Tantric and Puranic descriptions of the Goddess's transcendent dwelling and is set in the Shikharini metre.

sudhāsindhormadhye suraviṭapivāṭīparivṛte maṇidvīpe nīpopavanavati cintāmaṇigṛhe | śivākāre mañce paramaśivaparyaṅkanilayāṃ bhajanti tvāṃ dhanyāḥ katicana cidānandalaharīm || 8||

অর্থ:In the midst of an ocean of nectar, on the Island of Gems girdled with groves of celestial wish-trees, in a pleasure-garden of kadamba blossoms, within a mansion built of Chintamani jewels, upon a couch shaped as Shiva and resting on the very bed of Parama-Shiva — there a few blessed souls worship You, who are the surging wave of pure Consciousness and Bliss.

Sit quietly facing east or north and use this verse as a dhyana shloka: as you recite, visualise the ocean of nectar, the gem-island, the kalpaka gardens, the Chintamani palace and the Mother seated upon the couch of Shiva as a wave of bliss. Let the imagery still the mind. Repeat 9, 11, 27 or 108 times before further worship or silent meditation.

It describes the Divine Mother's supreme abode: an ocean of nectar, the jewel-island Manidvipa surrounded by celestial wish-trees and kadamba gardens, a mansion of Chintamani gems, and a couch shaped as Shiva on which She, the wave of consciousness-bliss, is seated and worshipped by a blessed few.
Manidvipa, the 'Island of Gems', is the transcendent dwelling of the Divine Mother described in Tantric and Puranic literature. This verse gives one of the most beautiful poetic portraits of it and is widely used as a meditation on Her abode.
Its rich, ordered imagery — ocean, island, gardens, palace, throne — naturally draws the mind inward and upward, making it an ideal dhyana shloka for visualising the Goddess as Chidananda, the wave of pure consciousness and bliss.
It means the 'wave of consciousness-bliss'. The verse addresses the Goddess as this very wave (lahari), echoing the name of the hymn itself and identifying Her with the blissful, conscious ground of all reality.
