Traditional Sanskrit kavacha (Tantric/Puranic tradition, framed as spoken by Bhairava) · Traditional · Puranic / traditional

The Surya Kavacham belongs to the class of 'kavacha' hymns in which a deity is invoked to protect the worshipper limb by limb. Framed as the teaching of Lord Bhairava, it praises the Sun as the God of gods and the inexhaustible treasure of all light, and then weaves his radiance — invoked through names such as Ghrini, Aditya, Bhaskara, Martanda and Bhanu — over the head, senses, heart, limbs and mind of the devotee, forming a shield of solar power against all harm.

શાસ્ત્રોમાં કહ્યા પ્રમાણે

Sun-worship traditions recall how the sage Yajnavalkya and others, afflicted and seeking refuge, propitiated Surya and were restored to health and brilliance by his grace. It is said that one who recites the Surya Kavacham daily at dawn with faith is encircled by the Sun's radiance, so that disease, enemies and the malefic glances of the planets cannot touch him.

The Surya Kavacham is a 'kavacha' or protective armour hymn dedicated to Surya, the Sun god. In it, the Sun is invoked by his many names to protect each limb and the mind of the devotee, beginning 'Ghrinih patu shiro desham' — 'May the radiant Sun protect my head.'
'Kavacha' literally means armour or a protective shield. A kavacham hymn invokes a deity to guard specific parts of the body one by one, so that the devotee is enveloped in divine protection like a suit of armour.
It is recited for good health, vitality and protection from disease, since Surya governs arogya (health). It is also chanted for courage and victory, and as a remedy for an afflicted Sun or malefic planetary influences in one's horoscope.
It is best recited at sunrise, facing east, ideally while offering arghya (water) to the Sun. Sundays and the festival of Ratha Saptami are considered especially auspicious for its recitation.
