✦ Meaning
In these verses from Chapter 12 of the Devi Mahatmya (Durga Saptashati), the Goddess declares the power of her Mahatmya to quell pestilence and every portent, and promises that wherever it is duly recited in her sanctuary she will never depart — her living presence abiding there always. She bids it be recited and heard at every offering, worship, fire-rite and festival, and graciously promises to accept with love whatever worship and oblation are offered to her, whether done with full knowledge or not.
Origin & Story
Durga Saptashati Chapter 12 · Maharshi Markandeya (traditionally ascribed) · Puranic period (c. 5th–6th century CE for the Devi Mahatmya)
The Devi Mahatmya (Durga Saptashati or Chandi), part of the Markandeya Purana, recounts the Divine Mother's victories over the demons and, in Chapter 12, the phalashruti of her worship. Here the Goddess declares that her Mahatmya quells pestilence and every kind of portent, and promises that wherever it is recited in her sanctuary she will never depart — her presence abiding there forever. She bids it be recited and heard at all worship, fire-rites and festivals, and assures her devotees that she lovingly accepts whatever offerings are made to her, whether knowingly or unknowingly.
✦ As told in scripture
Tradition holds that temples and homes where the Durga Saptashati is recited daily become charged with the living presence of the Goddess, as she herself promises here. Devotees recount sanctuaries protected through epidemics and calamities, and worship lovingly received even when performed imperfectly, in keeping with the Mother's gracious assurance.
